Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

The Sweaterphone is ringing

If Krivsky can wait until Monday, so as not to disturb the team chemistry on the flight home, he can re-sign one of his
favorites.
Of course, if he waits until Monday, it might be too late. I'm sure the market is just busting for aging middle infielders who can't hit or field.

That key signing, and a promotion for Chad Moeller surely will right all the wrongs in the universe.

oh yes!
I was just thinking that this team was just one veteran away, this could be the ticket.

Oh wow!
He's available?  Julio Franco is available too.  He has enough years under his belt to count for three mediocre veterans all by himself!  It would enable us to get rid of Conine, Bellhorn and Moeller all at once.
Please don't trade Adam Dunn.

what?
the braves released Franco? I thought he played well enough to be on the bench after the Texira deal.

Unfortunately not. (I like Franco.)

Julio Franco was designated for assignment and put on waivers Wednesday, but that doesn't necessarily mean the popular first baseman's playing career with the Braves is over.

If he makes it through waivers without being claimed in 72 hours, the Braves would like the 48-year-old to stay with them either as a player or player-coach in the minor leagues.

Franco could then be brought back to the big league team when rosters are expanded in September. But he won't be playing much first base now that the Braves have Mark Teixeira, the switch-hitting slugger they got in a seven-player trade with Texas on Tuesday.

"We're hoping he'll take an assignment in the organization," said Braves manager Bobby Cox, who said it was difficult telling Franco the news Wednesday.

Franco was dropped from the roster 13 days after the Braves signed him to a free-agent contract following his release by the New York Mets.

"It's really hard, because he's doing so well," Cox said. "He's been fantastic."

The oldest player in the majors, Franco hit .250 with three doubles and seven RBIs in 11 games for the Braves, including 8-for-24 (.333) with three doubles and five RBIs in his past seven games.

"He gave us spark," Cox said, "not only catching the ball, but hitting. He was a tough out."

Franco has indicated he would stay with the Braves if not claimed by another team.

The Braves cleared two roster spots for bullpen newcomers Octavio Dotel and Ron Mahay, acquired in trades Tuesday. Reliever Jose Ascanio was optioned to Class AA Mississippi.

Teixeira was activated before Tuesday's game, when the Braves optioned reliever Chad Paronto to Class AAA Richmond. Corky Miller was brought from Richmond to serve as backup catcher after the Braves traded rookie Jarrod Saltalamacchia to Texas in the Teixeira deal.

Corky Miller?
Good to see him back in the bigs again.
Please don't trade Adam Dunn.

Weird
Seems like they would have a better bat off the bench w/ Pena instead, he has been hitting almost 100 points higher in Richmond than Miller with 20% more AB's.

I'm starting to realize..
..that there are quite a few Red Reporters who have crushes on the Braves.

Guilty.

Jealousy
most of us are reds fans by birth. and I think we would like to be fans of a team with a clear linear path to winning.

its taken a while
but im starting to forgive them for '95.  ruining the I-71 series left an eternal fire in my belly for the braves.  you gotta respect that organization though.  damn...14 straight division titles?  thats crazy!!
you know who the reds need? lebron james.

I had a major man-crush
on old Corky when he was with the Reds. He was the Weekend All-Star the season that I had a partial season ticket plan...it seemed like he won a game or two for them and was getting big hits every time I went to the park.

Unfortunately for him (and maybe the Reds), I couldn't afford a full season ticket package, so I was not there to properly inspire him the other 90% of the games played.

Plus, he had the Jack Black look going, which gave me a good laugh .

if we had unloaded Hatti and Co9 like we shoulda, I would have been fine w/ franco splitting time w/ Votto. Someone will claim him.

Wow
Royce Clayton sets foot in the Reds dugout as anything but someone who is lost and took a wrong turn, Wayne should be fired immediately.

Multiple choice
The Reds always seem to have someone on their major league roster, usually a position player, who does not really belong on any major-league roster.  This is the Designated Roster Mismanagement Spot.  Past occupants of the Designated Roster Mismanagement Spot include Tony Womack, Jason LaRue, Pedro Lopez, Todd Hollandsworthless, Dewayne Wise, Jason Romano, John Vander Wal, Reggie Taylor and the grandaddy of them all, Quinton McCrappen.

Since Royce Clayton and Julio Franco are available, time for multiple choice:

I would rather have which one of the following on the team to fill the Designated Roster Mismanagement Spot:

A) Royce Clayton
B) Juan Castro
C) Chad Moeller
D) Julio Franco
E) Quinton McCrappen
F) Dewayne Wise
G) The author of Mein Kampf
H) A pitcher, even Joe Mays

If it came down to it, I think I would rather have Royce Clayton, although if he were on the roster, Macarena would be tempted to start him over EdE or Gonzalez or to use him as a defensive replacement who can't defend.

Please don't trade Adam Dunn.
