Favorite Baseball Video Games

With the release of Madden '08 tomorow it is only fitting that we all should share our favorite baseball video games...

If anyone here has a favorite or least favorite game or both, tell us why it rule or sucked

My all time favorite is Home Run King, it came out in 01 and had Jeff Bagwell on the cover. It was the best baseball game I played cause you could create your own player and at the time it had great customizing features.

I haven't played much of MLB the Show or Recent All-Star Baseball games so if anyone wants to give a review on those it would be very helpful.

best baseball game of all time
SNK's "baseball stars" for the NES.  it wasnt mlb, but it was soooo fun.  one team was made up of all chicks called the "lovely ladies".  another was a team of mythical beasts and movie villians called the "ghastly monsters".

And the very first I believe to save your games for full season play, right?

And we've had this thread before.

Baseball Stars
was the greatest. There is nothing close. I wasted many hours in college playing that game. One of my buddies may still even have a videotape of our classic league championship game.

I was famous for the cheap bunt hits. Have a hitter with zero power, stick out your bat, and watch the ball trickle right down the line to third base. Problem was, the third baseman was stuck frozen to the bag. The CPU gave you control of the SS!

Also, when building and upgrading my team, I would always fire my players and create women. I loved the  sidearm female pitchers, cause they threw underhand.

Anyone remember the cheat code to get a superteam?

I have an old NES
but I don't think it works. And I know I still have the old game cartridge somewhere.

Me too
My little brother and I played countless hours of Baseball Stars. I loved kicking his ass with the Lovely Ladies. You had to their love the pink uni's with the little shorts:

There are three great choices here
First off, the classic RBI Baseball for NES. That game was extremely fun back in the day.

Secondly, Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for SNES. The gameplay was solid, but where it really stood out was with the names: all the players were fake except for Griffey himself, so they had a theme for just about any team. Some of them were hilarious.

From the Wiki article about the game:

    * The Cincinnati Reds are writers (B. Stoker, P. Dick, E. Queen).
    * The Detroit Tigers are famous Motown singers, (A. Franklin, G. Knight and R. Smokey).
    * The Houston Astros are cartoonists (G. Larson, W. Eisner, S. Lee).
    * The Milwaukee Brewers have a pitching staff consisting of superhero "secret identities" (P. Parker, K. Kent, B. Wayne), while their position players are fictional secret agents and detectives (J. Rockford, J. Bond).
    * The Los Angeles Dodgers are based on punk rock pioneers from Los Angeles and other areas around California including (Exene Cervenka, John Doe and DJ Bonebrake of X, Poison Ivy and Lux Interior of The Cramps, Jello Biafra and Klaus Flouride of the Dead Kennedys, and Lee Ving of Fear).
    * The San Diego Padres are based on punk rock pioneers from the UK including (Billy Idol, the members of The Damned, Johnny Rotten, and Sid Vicious).
    * The New York Mets are based on punk rock pioneers from New York including (Johnny Thunders, Joey Ramone, Tom Verlaine, Jerry Nolan).
    * The Kansas City Royals are based on U.S. presidents (the third batter is D. Ike, whose real-life counterpart is DH Hall of famer George Brett).
    * The St. Louis Cardinals are comedians (H. Moe is actually Bob Tewksbury, O. Hardy is famous shortstop Ozzie Smith).
    * The Oakland Athletics apparently hired more authors with H. Ernest (he replaces Mark McGwire), L. Byron, M. Twain, and L.Tolstoy.
    * The Colorado Rockies contain famous names from horror movies (including G. Romero, B. Lugosi, and T. Savini) .
    * The California Angels, unsurprisingly, have famous actors on their team (F. Astair, H. Bogart, J. Wayne).
    * The Texas Rangers, appropriately, have a Western theme (their best pitcher, T. Mix, "fills in" for Kevin Brown).
    * The Philadelphia Phillies feature a Rocky homage in R. Balboa (Darren Daulton) and A. Creed (Dave Hollins). They also have a Philadelphia landmark (L. Bell) and some of the musicians produced by Phil Spector (D. Love, B. Medley).
    * The Seattle Mariners have Nintendo of America employees on their team, except Ken Griffey Jr.
    * The Baltimore Orioles pay tribute to Baltimore native John Waters with B. Divine, P. Flamingo, (Mike Mussina) M. Trasho, and H. Spray, as well as Waters himself standing in for Cal Ripken Jr.
    * The Cleveland Indians have famous actresses and glamor girls on their team. (A. Margret, A. Hepburn, M. Monroe, G. Garbo).
    * The Boston Red Sox contain members from the show Cheers. Cliff Claven, Norm Peterson, and Sam Malone are all present. Also included are Boston landmarks (B. Common, M. Harvard) and figures from early American history (J. Adams, J. Hancock, A. Hamilton).
    * The Chicago White Sox are former basketball players from St. John's University (M. Sealy, C. Mullin, M. Jackson).
    * The Atlanta Braves are famous dance DJ's, such as Sasha & Digweed. A pitcher for the team is named G. Park, presumably in reference to Atlanta's famed Grant Park. In addition, D. Crime and D. Neon likely refer to Fred "the Crime Dog" McGriff and "Neon" Deion Sanders, respectively.
    * The Toronto Blue Jays are players from the Wigan Warriors rugby team (E. Hanley, M. Offiah, D. Betts).
    * The Montreal Expos are people from the 1980s music scene in Manchester, UK, including members of New Order and The Smiths.

And finally, MVP Baseball 2005. That was a great game, and I'm hella pissed that they didn't get to continue the series due to the license being bought out. They should do something like Ken Griffey Jr. Presents, in my opinion. It would rock.

MVP 2005
This is my favorite baseball game for the PC too.  In fact, so many people were pissed they didn't continue it that the fans have continued it themselves.  I'm playing the unofficial MVP 2007 now, with complete roster updates, player photos, schedule and stadium updates, etc.

Check out www.mvpmods.com

You can also get "skins" of sorts which completely remake the look of the game.  Right now I'm using the FSN overlay (looks like watching a game on FSN).

A few good ones out now
I am a big fan of MLB '07 for the XBOX360, as well as the baseball game for the Wii for very different reasons.

The MLB '07 game has a lot of great features to it. Gameplay is tight, and although you have to really jack up the difficulty to get a pseudo-realistic game once you get the hang of hitting, I like the control structure in this game about as much as I have ever liked a setup. There are also Franchise and Dynasty modes and you can run many aspects of the organization, ala Baseball Mogul. There's a lot to like for just about everyone in MLB '07.

On the other end of the spectrum is the baseball game that is included in the Wii Sports pack. For those of us fortunate enough to have a Wii, this package comes with the console. The baseball game is not remarkable graphically (the players all look like Fisher Price Little People) and is not terribly realistic, but damn if it isn't a freaking hoot to play. You'll cackle with glee the first time your Mii whacks one out of the park. The difficulty automatically scales if you are playing against the computer, so it gives you a pretty good challenge every time out. A lot of fun.

In the classic division, I have to say my favorite baseball game of all time was the Intellivision baseball for the Atari 2600. That game was addictive, and I do not care to remember how many hours of my adolescence I wasted in front of a TV playing that game. We set up leages and scored the games. Ah, memories.

Wow, I just noticed I was prattling! :)

I think...
...the only one I've played is MVP 2005.  PC version.  I have a Playstation around here somewhere, but I prefer PC games.

After the Angels knocked the Yankees out of the postseason in 2005, I went through the entire Halos lineup and plunked every batter.

There are supposedly people still modding MVP 2005, keeping it up to date, adding winterball, etc.  I keep meaning to download the mods, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

Oh, and...
...I found this hilarious.  A guy was playing MVP baseball against his brother, Mets v. Yankees.  He didn't realize his brother had changed all the Yankees stats.  He thought it was a little odd that Tony Womack was batting .500, and Bubba Crosby was 10 for 10 with 7 homers and 28 RBIs in one game, but he didn't realize what was going on until his brother confessed...after two months.

MLB '07 The Show
is pretty decent for PS2.  The career mode is pretty interesting, especially having your character play at Chattanooga and Louisville on the way to the bigs.  Although it's tough to see "myself" with a 103 MPH fastball, 12-6 curveball, 61 MPH circle change, and deadly screwball getting stuck in AAA behind Joe Mays... I guess the GMs are simulated pretty well too...

As for classic games, nothing compares to RBI Baseball '94 for the Sega Genesis.  Me and my buddies would pull all nighters and leave the TV on for days playing every game of the 162 game seasons (because you couldn't save games).

Another interesting one for Genesis was Super Baseball 2020 (bonus points for anyone who actually remembers this).  Basically the game was set in the year 2020, and all the players were robots.  It was interesting.

Fictioner Than Strange
I remember Baseball 2020.  The premise was that by 2020, baseball owners were sick of .250 hitters commanding billion-dollar salaries, so they can the human players and buy robots.

The thing I remember most is that you could buy weapons for your 'bots, so if you were thrown out at first, you could destroy the opposing first basemen and be safe anyway.  (It would also be nice if we could buy a new shoulder system for a guy like Livingston to upgrade his fastball into the 110 mph range, but, hey, it's not 2020 just yet, I suppose.)

High Heat Baseball
Funny thing is that I never really played the PC game other than to use it to sim seasons for an online High Heat baseball league. It allowed team owners to manage the MLB team as well as the minor league system, draft, etc. And with a salary cap. I spent more hours trying to master the sim game than I've spent with any other video game period.

That sim league was a good time for quite a while even if the sabermetric GM's generally stayed at teh top (I won a ridiculous 132 games one year). Then league switched High Heat versions which screwed up things royally. Then they started giving owners the ability to augment prospects in some fairly insane ways.

But while it was normal and active, the ability to sim with High Heat online offered owners a heck of a good time and a pretty darn realistic "GM" experience.

Sorry, best baseball video game was...
Baseball Simulator 1000, where you could pick the "ultra" version, play in space, and have your pitchers throw fireballs or have your hitters hit zigzag balls.  Hands down best game ever.  I wish I could find it for my old school Nintendo.

Locker Room Babes
was one of the better adult sports oriented videos. It was right up there the well known "1st Base, 2nd, 3rd Then Slide" That was defiantly a 'home run' video. Of course on the Homophonic side there was the old fav "Towel Boy Takes One For the Team' and my favorite "You Catcher - I Pitcher" Starring the well endowed Richard Pole.

I'm not familiar with "Baseball Stimulator 1000" Was it a Sci-Fi thing? Ooops it is time for bed - gotta run.

MVP Basball 2005
You guys got it all wrong.  MVP Baseball 2005 is the best baseball game ever, hands down.  Managing your MLB team and a AAA, AA, and A team this is the most in depth and best baseball game ever.  The gaming is as smooth as silk, the ability to have 4 teams is amazing, and its way better than the crap MLB 2k makes every year.  I have played both and I'm not a fan of EA and I have to say that this game is the amazing.  MLB '07 The Show is crap, plain and simple.

Worst Baseball Game Ever
Great Baseball for Sega Master System. If you pushed both the A and B button at the same time, you'd hit a homerun everytime. 90% of the time, it worked every time. Loved it. Great Basketball was worse, but not by much.

Great Basketball
Inevitably every game against another human would devolve into both teams throwing up full court shots. It made no difference in your shooting percentage where you shot from.

I say an underrated game was MLB Slugfest...
The Gameplay wasn't that great but it was awesome. The game was pretty much the NFL Biltz for baseball it was so outrageous and made fun of the sport so much that it was fun. Has anyone elsed played any game in that series?

worst baseball game
My pick is Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball for the Sega Game Gear (probably for other systems too). It was released in 1995 so the Reds were good, but the gameplay was atrocious. First you chose what type of pitch to throw (every pitcher had at least 5), then you chose the location, then you selected fast medium or slow. It took about 40 seconds to deliver every pitch. And whenever a batter was retired there was an animation of him walking back to the dugout followed by an animation of the next batter walking to the plate. These couldn't be skipped and it faded in and out for each one, adding about ten seconds. Each game took three hours and ended 1-0 or 2-1 (my theory was that I never played enought to become good at batting, but maybe the game was just really skewed toward pitching). I never had the patience to play anything resembling a full season. The one saving grace was that when I was struck with insomnia I'd take the Game Gear to bed and be asleep by the fourth inning.

every used video game store has like 10 copies of that game. It was by far the worst game in baseball
