Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

Now I don't feel so bad

I have been sitting around since yesterday afternoon, sucking my teeth over the lack of deadline deals by the Reds.

But this morning, I came across the details (courtesy of Jason Stark) on what might be the worst trade since, well, The Trade, at least...maybe worse.

You might have heard that the Pirates got Matt Morris from the Giants. What absolutely stunned me was that Stark wrote that the Giants were offering to pick up major amounts of Morris' salary (9 mil) just to get rid of him for a bag of batting practice balls.

The Pirates apparently swooped in, offered them a decent prospect, a PTBNL, AND picked up all of Morris' salary.

Wow.

Suddenly, Wayne looks positively competent.

I will say
That the fact that Stormy, Hatte, and Ko-9 are still on this team today is borderline criminal.

But at least he ain't THAT dumb.

Why it is great to be a reds fan! Reason 204
Even if the team really sucks, you can always think of the team in Pittsburgh.

This should make you feel better too
From Jim Callis Chat:

Ben (Centerville, OH): At only 20 years old, Jay Bruce is starting to hit very well in AAA. Any chance he start opening day 2008 in left field for the Reds (assuming Dunn's option isn't picked up)?

Jim Callis: Yes, I think Bruce will be starting for the Reds next April. It's funny, he's one of the best prospects in the minors and I still think he's better than most people realize. No reason he couldn't play center, either. I think he's in the lineup even if Dunn is still around.

and...

Ben (Centerville, OH): Johnny Cueto was moved up to AAA to start today. Any chance he opens next year in the Reds rotation or is a June callup a la Homer Bailey more likely?

Jim Callis: The Reds are cautious with their pitchers, like most clubs are, so I'll say June. I really do like Cueto, though.

And...
Jack (Cincinnati): Matt Maloney: 3rd, 4th, 5th starter or reliever?

 Jim Callis: No. 4.

I've gotta say...
I have no earthly idea who Jim Callis is, but I like the cut of his jib.

Get Joe Morgan on the phone immediately! Jim needs a promotion to the mother ship.

Not a fan of Hamilton, is he?

Hate to keep pointing this out
But Hamilton has only had around 245 PAs this year. I've liked what I've seen (OPS+ 130), but he's spent considerable time on the DL from food poisoning and swinging a second bat. He also left a game in June with some dizziness. Perhaps he's not as much of an unknown quantity as Jay Bruce, but he's close.

started buying cards when i was about 7, often bought them by the box, and never really gave up the hobby. so 17 years on and off?

maybe not so good
that seems like a long time for just approximating. but i didnt have any of the packs left, and i had to try to figure out how many cards were in each pack, so i counted a stack and tried to use deduction to figure it out. then i had to figure out how many cards were in each book, and i was really bad at organization when i was little, so a lot of the pages would have 5 or 6 cards per slot. so i took a decent sample size and figured a mean card/page number for each book. im pretty confident that the number i came up with is within one percent.

During the game tonight,
THom called this a "great" move by the Pirates. I almost crashed the car into a tree I was so surprised.

Apparently...
The Giants are paying the rest of this year's salary...

They get him next year for I think 9 million.  Maybe it's not so bad of a move?

He's, what? 33 and
an average pitcher... The Pirates aren't contending next year, what's the point? That and won't that 9 mil be like 1/4 of the team's entire payroll? Jeezus.

It doesn't make it a good move but..
..I'm assuming they'll trade him for a lil sumpin' next summer.
