Game Thread: Game 88 vs. the Diamondbacks

TIME: 1:15 @ Great American

DIAMONDBACKS PROBABLE:
       REDS PROBABLE:
Yusmeiro Petit (1-1, 2.19)              Aaron Harang (9-2, 3.84)

Just wanted to get this up early so as to also pass along the news (thanks Ash) that Homer was sent down to Louisville for Pedro Lopez. When you enter the all-star break and you have a starting pitcher in an option year, send him down to make way for a player you can use until his next start. Although I'm not sure why we need another infielder... a bullpen arm would have done nicely.

petit is a spot starter for the injured Randy Johnson. he's only started thrice (twice this season) but has done nicely on tight pitch counts.

Infielder
Probably because Castro's on the DL.  We didn't have someone who's a good backup shortstop.

unless the thinking is that since hamilton's out freel will be in center. but he should (i hope) be out just one game, so that doesnt make a lot of sense.

We've got Freel...
But he's never played SS on the major league level.  BP hasn't played SS much, and he's been awful when he has.

SS is a key position, and not easily covered by infielders not used to it, so I expected them to make some kind of move to replace Castro.

I also think it's possible that Hamilton could be out longer than one game.  Bad sprains can take longer to heal than breaks.  Dunno how bad his is, but the fact that they're putting a cast on the wrist doesn't sound good.

castro and Hammy
Just a feeling here but I think he is going to need surgery so there will be a need for a competent middle infielder.

I also look for Hamilton to be dl'd for the minimum amount of time

Maybe not
But I think any team would do the same.  You have to have a backup SS.  It's almost as essential as a backup catcher.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jul 8, 2007 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

or two backup catchers
seriously, youre fine to go with a makeshift lineup one day (or for one inning). Phillips, freel, hell even keppinger would be fine for a defensive replacement or even a spot start at short. you dont need to waste a roster spot for a guy thats likely going to play one inning or less.

by boobs on Jul 8, 2007 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Not two backup catchers
One is sufficient. But you need one.

I think Castro is likely to be out for awhile.  Hence this move.  But even if he weren't, I think most teams would call up a backup SS if they didn't have any, even for one game.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jul 8, 2007 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

i really dont care what other teams would do
im not comparing the move to what other gms would do or what conventional baseball wisdom is. im saying you dont "need" a shortstop specialist to sit on your bench for a few games and play in one. its not likely to bite you in the ass to move phillips to short one day or play freel at short to give gonzalez rest, if he even needs it. if gonzalez gets injured, then call up a shortstop. if he has to come out in the middle of a game, then take him out and do something creative. the roster spot is more efficiently used on someone who will see some action, like a bullpen arm.

and its not the same as catching. catchers get really bad knees and need to sit much more often than shortstops, who, on occasion, can play in 2,632 straight games.

Probably doesn't matter
'cause I think the Reds have given up for the season.

But Cincinnati doesn't strike me as the kind of team to do things "creatively."  They're pretty much by the book, and calling up an infielder in this situation is pretty much by the book.

FWIW, the Bats radio guys think Janish will be called up to take Castro's place if he's out for a significant amount of time.

They also think there's no way Mackanin will still be managing the Reds next year.

i like you a lot. but youre looking right through my comments.

i didnt say it wasnt by the book. i said it was stupid. quite a few things in the book are stupid, and their presence in the book doesnt change anything. yes, it's a safe move, but it's still an inefficient use of a 25-man roster. FWIW, i really wish the reds were a team that did things creatively. it would give them a much-needed advantage to help counteract a relatively small payroll.

I like Lopez.
I liked him when he was in the White Sox organization and he zoomed past more heralded Robert Valido as a SS prospect. He's a decent hitter, is all right with the glove, can get on base and doesn't have a particularly high K rate per BB. He's 23.

I don't know that he's a longterm answer for anything, but in light of Castro being hurt, why not give him a taste of the big leagues and whet his appetite a bit. The kid has some potential.

Hopefully Homer can work on his breaking
stuff and get some help corralling his faster fastball (94-96mph).

I don't know why BP couldn't be backup at SS for a couple of days, A chance for a 3Aer (or even a 2Aer) to come up and pitch out of the bull pen should not be wasted. Management needs to get these guys up and get them any and all experience possible.

Anyway, I will say I was happy to see Mackamackamackaman actively managing with regards to Homer.  I applaud the decision to take him out after 87 pitches on a positive note.  The season is a loss, so developing Homer Bailey needs to be priority #1 for this team.

The assumption is always that the Reds can't afford to spend money, but if you look across the Majors, $13M is still a decent deal for the type of production that Dunn provides.  Plus, they'll have some money to spend already once Milton, Lohse, Cormier, and Larue's money is off the books.

Came close twice: 28/36 in '95, and 26/36 in '99 (not with the Reds).  He only actually hit 30 HRs twice, both post-Reds (and slower) years.

No, and once.
Larkin never came close to 30 HRs in another season (second highest total: 20).  Remember '96, though?  He "only" hit .298, but had 33 HR and 89 RBI, not to mention 117 runs scored.

As for Davis, he only hit 30 HRs twice, in '87 (37) and '89 (34).  In '89, he only had 20 SB, but in '87, he had 50.  Also: did you know that he had an 80 SB season?  I had no idea, but he had 80 SB, 11 CS in '86.  27 HR, too.

but you can't put a stat on everything i know all the stat geeks think that is the dumbest thing in the world to say and true baseball is a game of stats but can you put a stat on team chemistry or other things. Stats are very important don't get me wrong I just hate how everyone uses numbers to judge something rather than what they see.

I'm talking about zing, zork, kapowza. If you can't see it I can't help you. The team is losing (I have no idea what the actual record is), but the lack of zazz is clear to me and it's killing them. Also the bullpen arms.

Doin' it proper.
Rotten
So rotten here
So rotten
Oh
It was like, the last day before trash day
My place was gettin' kinda nas-tay
Even though the garbage I knew would reek
(You know) Thought that I could leave it for one more week
Then, um, I'm takin'
Birthday cake 'n'
(Oh) Chili and greasy old bacon
Throw it all on top of the mess I been makin'
Wife's so mad, she starts to shakin'
Leaky bag, 'n' now that girl is gaggin'
She's naggin'
"I need you to get that stuff off the kitchen floor"
"Is that too much to ask you for?"
But I see no reason why
Can't let a few more weeks go by
And now garbage is piled up high
And buddy, you should see the flies
I said...

There's somethin' rotten here (say what?)
You better hold your nose
(Hey, you disgusting slob, you gotta take the trash out)
Boy there's a lot in here (a lot)
And every day it grows
(Hey, you disgusting slob, you gotta take the trash out)
Make ya wanna throw up

Look at all this garbage that I keep generatin'
(Come on) I sit around all day and watch it biodegradin'
Bet there's a hundred health codes that I'm violatin'
Even my dog passed out and needed resuscitatin'
You won't believe it, take a whiff of that aroma
Sure to put you in a coma
It's so messy, can't find my toenail clippers
It's so bad, the roaches wearin' slippers
Warm, sweaty clothes piled up in this joint
Stand up by themselves at this point
It's so filthy, now baby, I can't lie
I wipe my feet before I go outside
I wonder what crawled in here and died
(You know) Walkin' 'round barefoot, I'd be terrified
But it gives me stuff to talk about with my friends
Like "Hey, I think them rats gettin' big!"
Oh

There's somethin' rotten here (say what?)
You better hold your nose
(Hey, you disgusting slob, you gotta take the trash out)
Look what we got in here (now what?)
Let's watch it decompose
(Hey, you disgusting slob, you gotta take the trash out)
Make ya wanna throw up
With a little bit of a... and a little bit of a...
Make me wanna throw up
It makes ya wanna... just makes ya wanna...
Oh

Some Lysol, some Comet
I got a mop and it's got your name on it
(What?) I'm just kiddin', doggone it
(Oh) Unless you gonna do it
Careful not to breathe the fumes
Check it, garbage piles are goin' all the way to the bathroom
Turn into toxic waste sometime this afternoon
Better get a Hazmat suit and a push broom
Oh

There's somethin' rotten here (say what?)
You better hold your nose
(Hey, you disgusting slob, you gotta take the trash out)
It's gone to pot in here (to pot)
Bring out the firehose
(Hey, you disgusting slob, you gotta take the trash out)
Make ya wanna throw up
With a little bit a... and a little bit a...
Make me wanna throw up
Give a little bit a... and a tiny bit a...
Make ya wanna throw up
Mix a little bit a... with a molecule a...
Make me wanna throw up
It makes me wanna... just makes me wanna...
Oh

And to answer your question from Friday, I looked for "How the West Was Won" last time I was at Best Buy, but they didn't have it.  It's #1 on my list to buy, though.

He's average for a first baseman
