Game Thread: Game 83 vs. the Giants

TIME: 7:10 @ Great American

GIANTS PROBABLE:
             REDS PROBABLE:
Barry Zito (6-8, 4.61)            Aaron Harang (8-2, 3.80)

First day of a new era? It seems awfully indicting of Jerry Narron that the the first day he's gone brings the dismissal of the Reds third catcher. If that was Jerry Narron's idea then I'm even gladder that he's gone, but I'd also be puzzled at Wayne Krivsky letting his manager make such important roster decisions.

First Day
here we go
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds

by Caleb on Jul 3, 2007 4:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Lineups
REDS
Freel, cf
Phillips, 2b
Griffey Jr., rf
Conine, 1b
Dunn, lf
Encarnacion, 3b
Gonzalez, ss
Ross, c
Harang, rhp

GIANTS
Roberts, cf
Winn, rf
Durham, 2b
Bonds, lf
Klesko, 1b
Molina, c
Feliz, 3b
Vizquel, ss
Zito, lhp

I'm going to go on record and say that I don't like the Reds lineup, but I'd probably only change Hamilton for Freel so I guess I shouldn't complain.  I still think the Reds will win.

I don't know why chandrathan is so mad at me. That guy is cuh-razy.

any one else rooting for Bonds to hit
a bunch of solo homers this week? I'd love to see him hit a bunch and the Reds win all the games

Most homers between 2 opponents
According to Elias:
Tonight's game between the Reds and Giants will feature 2 players with a total of 1,335 home runs (Bonds 750, Griffey 585).

It is the highest home run total between 2 players entering a game since Cleveland played at Milwaukee on 8/1/76 and featured 1,341 homers between Frank Robinson (586) and Hank Aaron (755).

The game with the most homers between 2 players occurred on 7/17/73, when the Mets played at Atlanta. Willie Mays entered that game with 658 homers and Hank Aaron had 697 for a total of 1,355. Aaron homered in that game to bring the total to 1,356.

Now, if they can just hit 10 HRs each this series
.. we have the record.  Man... imagine the press coverage that would bring.  Its all people would talk about.

if they each hit 10HRs in this series, there might be another broken record that gets a tad more press coverage.

Our Manager
The funny thing is, unless I see it written somewhere else, I can't remember our manager's name.

not sure if that's a bad or good thing.

We miss Lincecum and Lowry this series.
I'm sure Zito, Cain, and Morris can still shut us down, but Lincecum would destroy us and Lowry already has.

As for the Moeller thing, I think that's just a result of Freel being healthy. Wayne just loves Hopper more than he loves Moeller.

by Geki on Jul 3, 2007 4:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Honestly
Is our bench really that bad?  I'm not too ashamed of Castro, Hopper, Conine, and Valentin sitting on the bench.  And as stopgaps, Castro and Hopper are pretty useful--together, they can cover just about everything.  The problem comes when they start.

by Gray on Jul 3, 2007 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Castro shouldn't be on an MLB roster
but other than that, it's not horrible.  Especially if you replaced Castro with Keppinger or even better a lefty bat that could play the infield.

The removal of Castro for Keppinger
would make a pretty decent considering that Freel can play any where and BP can play shortstop. Don't forget that both Cootie and McBeth were quality collegiate center fielders.

Juan doesn't hit well and his defense is not what it once was. FDA him, someone will pick him up, I hope.

Another reason to be mad about Lincecum
...other than just shouting "Drew Stubbs!"  I was over at McCovey Chronicles today and they were debating over what nickname to give Lincecum.  It looks like they'd settled on Tim the Enchanter, which I love.  Damn them, and their opportunity to have such fun nicknames!

From an AP blurb about Freel's return:
Mackanin, who took over after Jerry Narron was fired on Sunday night, likes Freel's style and wants to see as much of it as he can.

"He's got a lot of energy," Mackanin said. "I think we need a lot of energy. I want to try to use him as much as I can and keep him as healthy as I can."

Freel was hitting only .251 with two homers and eight steals when he got hurt. He was happy to hear Mackanin's plans.

"It's nice to be thought about," he said.

by Gray on Jul 3, 2007 6:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Trent says
Mackanin wants Freel to play every day.  But that doesn't necessarily mean at CF.  He wants him to play all positions.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jul 3, 2007 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hope not
But still, I'm not convinced Freel can play at his best every day.  It seems like 4-5 games a week of all-out effort is about all he can maintain.

by Gray on Jul 3, 2007 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Keep Freel to a minimum
4-5 days in CF is perfect. No reason to take ABs away from Edwin or BP. ROY can sub for Dunn, Freel and Griffey.

Didn't we hate Narron for taking EdE out of the lineup. No way do I want that guy out of the lineup even for Freel.

by LastRites on Jul 3, 2007 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's probably all he'll get
What with his tendency to run into walls and all.

Even in his short stint in Triple-A, they gave a day off because they thought he looked tired.

I gotta say, though, I can understand where Mackanin is coming from.  I think the Reds desperately need someone with Freel's energy.  They need his spark.  I don't know if they really do play better when he's in the lineup, but it seems like they do.

It's not easy to play below .400 baseball.  It takes more than talent (or lack thereof) to be that bad.  At this point, it's psychological.  Maybe Freel can wake 'em up.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jul 3, 2007 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Expect that
as the storyline for a game writeup, should they win.  One head-first slide or diving catch, and Freel will be the sparkplug that inspires this team back to .500 baseball.

by Gray on Jul 3, 2007 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At this point...
.400 would be an improvement.  :-P

They look half-dead these days.  I don't ask that they run out to their positions.  I'd be happy if they all just run hard out of the batter's box.

What a bunch of geezers
I was just about to comment that I had no idea Dave Roberts is around, but the nI checked, and the youngest guy starting for the Giants is Zito (b. 1978).  After him, it's Feliz (1975).  In case anyone was wondering, today's lineup for the Giants:

Roberts 5/72
Winn 6/74
Durham 11/71
Bonds 7/64
Klesko 6/71
Molina 7/74
Feliz 4/75
Vizquel 4/67
Zito 5/78

Even with Griffey and Conine in, our lineup is quite a bit younger:

Freel 3/76
Phillips 6/81
Griffey 11/69
Conine 6/66
Dunn 11/79
Encarnacion 1/83
Gonzalez 2/77
Ross 3/77
Harang 5/78

There aren't all that many players that come to mind that really bust ass out of the box every time.  2 that do, 2 of my favorites to watch, and xbh kings, are Curtis Granderson & Grady Sizemore.  Freel usually does.  I fondly recall the '99 Reds, A.Boone, Pokey, & even Dmitri all put their heads down and took off the minute they made contact.  Others?

Bubba Crosby
That's a big reason I'm a fan.  Red Hot Mama asked him about it at Redsfest, and he said, "It can be hard to hit a ball.  It can be hard to catch a ball.  It's not hard to run hard every time."

Johnny Damon also runs hard every time.  I've seen him turn what looked like a routine popup into a double because he ran hard right out of the box.  The first time, it was the 8th inning, and the Yanks were up by 10 runs.  He still took off like a bat out of hell.

I wonder
I have seen Ross square to bunt more than a few times this year, I wouldn't mind if it was with one or less out and the runner on 2nd because no way Ross is making it to first on a bunt,  I just think certain players are just doing whatever the heck they want, regardless of the managers signs.

If that's the case here
David Ross needs to look around and realize that the pitcher is hitting behind him and that there is an out. He would be out #2 because he has got to be the slowest Red, and that leaves a runner on second, 2 outs, and the pitcher batting. Not good odds.

Gray threadjack again...
Gray--

"combined" = a whole season worth of stats, even though the player only played with the Reds for part of the season.

example: I could select 1984 Pete Rose as "partial", which would only use his stats generated while playing for the Reds, or I could select 1984 Pete Rose as "combined", which would use his total 1984 season, including that portion in which he did not play with the Reds.

I've got one "combined" player on my roster as it currently stands, but I wanted to make sure that's kosher before we actually get started.

by BubbaFan on Jul 3, 2007 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Isn't that obvious?
Bubba.  Since he's been gone, this Yanks team has had no aura at all.  And Bubba only strips to put himself through the minors.  Someday he'll be a mainstay in the Show, and can put all that behind him.

Mystique and Aura...
...were before Bubba's time.  That was back in 2001.  Bubba was still with the Dodgers, trying to stick at the Triple-A level back then.

Scott Brosius then, I guess
If you say "Aurabrosius" fast enough that it comes out as one word, it sounds like a character in The Labyrinth or something.

Yanks tickets
I'm sure a bunch will be available in September.  Just watch out for all the "fans" jumping off that bandwagon.

halfway through, and scrolled down to the bottom...

Game recap: (Yeah, there was a game)

Brandon Phillips hit a grand slam. The bullpen pitched 3 scoreless. Aaron Harang pitched six and got the win.
Oh, and that Bonds guy hit a homer.

Final 7-3.

This work for ya, tHan?

Oh...and...
Juan Disastro was used as a pinch hitter and made an out.

Norris Hopper was used as a defensive replacement and recorded a putout.

Coutlangus was used for less than an inning.

Seems like Narron never left...
