I would have been pretty excited about a David Weathers for Will Inman trade. There's no reason Krivsky couldn't at least approach what the Padres got for Linebrink with Weathers, but my guess is Weathers will remain with the team. Why I'm not entirely sure as it makes a ton of sense to trade him when his value is as high as it could ever be.

I think they'd trade Weathers if the right deal came along. He's not on the supposed list of untouchables that has been floating around.  

But boy, will this team be hard to watch without him.  They might never get out of the 8th inning.

Whoa
This is interesting to see.  The general perception is that Lohse has had some high quality outings but has been mostly bad.  And that Arroyo has had some poor outings (and low run support) but has been mostly good, or at least on the upswing.  I didn't have any idea they were this close, statistically.

Maybe that can be an effective marketing strategy: "Take Lohse, he's just as good as Arroyo!"

Good News everyone!
Oh, nevermind.  From Reds.com Press Pass:  Juan Castro has been activated off the 15-Day DL.  Pedro Lopez to the DL with a broken cheekbone.  He stayed overnight in the hospital, but should be released today.

I am really suprised Juan is back.  Just two days ago there was a story on Reds.com saying Juan's elbow could take about 15 throws before getting real sore to the point he couldn't throw.  They were going to give it a couple more days to react before giving him Tommy John surgery to end his season.  Maybe this is just for an emergency situation for the next few days until Alex Gonzalez gets back....  The Reds didn't really have room on the 40-Man to bring up an infielder.

there are only 38 on the 40-man roster.  

So Castro can't throw.  I guess that means he'll be used mainly as a pinch hitter.  Frankly, I'd rather see Enrique Cruz.

Aaron Harang is pretty good.
Brandon Phillips has a flawed-yet-dynamic game.

Alex Gonzalez will show you some magic tricks now and again.

Ken Griffey Jr is pretty darn good too.

And even though I think that Adam Dunn kid is the one who filled the teacher's lounge toilet with bleach and ammonia, he is a pretty good home run hitter.

I enjoy
watching Griffey and Dunn. I was at the 12 inning game on Monday night and it was very enjoyable. But Im ready to get a look at the team we will be fielding next year. Ready to consistently get a look at Votto, Mcbeth, Bray, EZ, Dumarait (sp), in the bigs. Ive been watching those guys here in Louisville and now Im ready to see what they are going to do in the bigs. Hatty, Conine, Stanton, Lohse are just taking up roster spots right now.

  • It's beginning to look as if the Cincinnati Reds' Jeff Conine will retire after this season.

    Conine, 41, has played reasonably well for the Reds - .254, five home runs, 26 RBI in 177 at-bats going into Wednesday night's game.

    "As of right now, I'm leaning toward this being my final season," he said.

  • The New York Yankees are very interested in finding some help for their bullpen before next Tuesday's deadline.

Wait til after we get something useful for you to say that you're closing up shop.  Lord.

Alright, so Conine's probably out.  They haven't shown any inclination to trade Weathers.  Hatte's played well recently, so it seems like they want to keep him rather than trade him while his value is high (I'm still not sure why the Yanks don't at least want to take a look at him).  Lohse - who knows?  At least he got the win last night.  Griffey's staying put, which is the right move (although I'd be open to moving him in the offseason).

So there's not really any action at all on the guys we should trade.  That leaves the possibility of Dunn (lucky to get $0.50 on the dollar back for him) or Edwin getting traded.  I'm hoping that enough teams are well-stocked at third that they won't want him.  Or maybe Krivsky will have a "Saul on the road to Damascus" moment and realize that he's actually got something valuable on his hands with EdE.

I am NOT looking forward to the trade deadline.  Call me pessimistic, but I just see Wayner blowing it, no matter what he does.

I could even go for it if Freel and Keppinger were switched.  Kepp makes more contact, but given Hatte's lack of speed, it might mean more double plays than Freel would hit into.

On that Lineup Generator
Somewhere on some website (that uses only obp and slg) - most of the time has Dunn batting 5th to maximize runs scored. I think it's a tool that's more interesting than particularly useful. (It puts bad hitters 3rd, and bats the pitcher 8th basically, to distribute your easy outs evenly).

But what I'm saying is that while I'd rather see Dunn bat higher, i'm vaguely ok/not too pissed off with fifth. It's really sixth that gets my goat.

that lineup generator
It doesn't really put bad hitters 3rd.  It puts average hitters third.  The hitter who is average in both OBP and SLG goes in the three-hole.

What it does show is that, if their stats are to be believed, lineups really don't matter.  The perfect lineup vs. the worst lineup usually ends up being a tenth or hundredth of a run difference per game, or something along those lines.

If that's true, I think it's reasonable to put players where they're comfortable, and stick with it.  If Griffey wants to bat third, let him bat third.  Every day.

My bad about the number three hitter
I think I ended up with Ryan Freel in the 3 spot and just assumed (....)

Also, I think I got an almost .3 run/game difference between the 'optimal' and current lineup. That's over 45 runs a season -  which could be four games. If we won four more games last season...

Maybe we're using different lineup generators.

I like it, but
  1. Fratty
  2. Dunn

Reasons: Dunn's effectiveness in RC would increase in the 2 spot. He gets on base and might have a shot of somebody knocking him in. Phillips line at cleanup is 302/349/368 in 149 PAs, but his batting line in the 3 spot is 286/357/490 in 57 PAs.  To small a sample size to mean anything, but he does seem to hit better at 3 or 4. Hitting him 3 would break up the three straight lefties at the top of the lineup, howevah.  You'd still have 5 straight righthanded batters at the backend, which is problematic if only because so many NL managers seem intent to play knifey-spoony with their relievers.

But as we say, it don't matter.

I saw one of his ABs last night..

But I think the thing that's getting danced around here with Vick is a significant cultural difference with respect to dogs. I grew up in the deep South and my best friend growing up was a black kid named Shadrick from the rough part of town. All his brothers were into pit bulls. Dog fighting was not rare and was practiced fairly openly (as was cockfighting, which is not illegal in Louisiana).

In my experience, african americans are far more ambivalent about dogs and are often leery of them. And if you think about it, it makes complete sense. Dogs--particularly attack dogs--have been used to hunt and terrorize blacks in the South for hundreds of years. They are more apt to see dogs as violent animals than as lovable pets.

I think that's why a number of players were initially clueless as to what the big deal was. In certain pockets of our society, it just isn't.

However, now that the electricution and gallows stuff is emerging, I'm not sure why anyone wants to step forward and defend him.

I hear ya.
Regarding dogfighting.  I'm right there with ya on the "significant cultural differences." (I have embarrased my wife at parties/gatherings more than once by kinda playing that card- in much the same way Deion did for Mike- when discussing the God-forsaken crime stories coming from Licking County... Think "family business.")

But regarding Deion's decision to get in Vick's huddle- I just don't get it.  But I guess if you're a semi-retired national celebrity who hasn't yet settled into the reality television circuit, you might holla just about any old opinion if the Fort Myers News-Press asks you to.

BTW, I have a silly, goofy and moderately well trained family dog that happens to be big and black with brown markings a la Rottweiller/Doberman and we get nervous looks and cautious comments every time we cruise through the park near the basketball courts.  I understand that for some families the family dog is not earning its keep by just playing fetch and keeping feet warm on the couch.

BTW, Man Mountain, I was genuinely interested in the animal cruelty book you mentioned some time ago.  What's it called?

I have a couple of dogs, one of them a smallish pitt-boxer mutt.  When I'm walking her, the reaction I get from african-american passerbys is often shockingly different than what I see from whites.  It happens with children and adults.  Aside from what MM mentions, I'd guess that a small but significant number of poorer inner-city and rural households (african-american and white) keep nasty and snarling pitts, rotties, etc. which scare the bejesus out of most people.  When that is your first exposure to dogs, it's not surprising that you view them as violent animals.

Perez and Bench both hit 40 in 1970 (Bench hit 45, Perez hit 40).  Klu and Wally Post hit 40 in 1955 (Klu hit 47, Post 40).

Lee May also hit 34 in 1970.  In 1956, Robinson (38), Post (36), and Klu (35) all hit 30 HR.

Just two days ago there was a story on Reds.com saying Juan's elbow could take about 15 throws before getting real sore to the point he couldn't throw.  They were going to give it a couple more days to react before giving him Tommy John surgery to end his season.

Yes.
He got all pissy once about getting sent down.  He thought he didn't deserve it because there were only a few innings where he gave up a bunch of runs, and if you took those innings out, he actually pitched well.

Like I've said before, if you just took that Watergate thing out of the Nixon presidency, it would look much, much better.

When he first got sent down this year (sorry, too lazy to find a link for you).  He said something about only having one bad outing, which would have been the game he started, gave up five runs, and didn't get an out.  He was snippy about being sent down, although he had a point that others deserved it too.  Not like he was setting the world on fire though.

So I did some digging...
When he was sent down:

Marcus McBeth has been placed on the inactive list.  His pregnant wife has been hospitalized.  Not sure if it's for a routine delivery or if there's a problem.

Dumatrait was abruptly pulled from the Bats game tonight, even though he was doing fine.

Apparently, it was "at the request of the Reds."

I was just coming here to mention that
Not sure what it means yet, though. Could be foreshadowing a Lohse deal with Dumatrait taking over in the rotation, could be Dumatrait taking over for Belisle in the rotation, could be Saarloos going down and Dumatrait pitching in the pen. My guess is Saarloos back to AAA, Belisle to the pen, Dumatrait taking over his spot in the rotation.

I'm glad Votto has started hitting as well. He's quietly been pretty awful for most of July, but it looks like he's busting out of that. I'm having a really hard time figuring out what to expect from him in the majors. Stats say he'll be damn good, but he has holes in his game in that his contact rates aren't great, he's not good against lefties, and his power production is pretty inconsistent. Scouting reports on him are mixed, and I've heard some scouts flat out say he won't hit in the majors. The limited at-bats of his I've seen have left me just as confused, as one time up he'll rip a line drive and the next he'll look lost at the plate and strike out on three pitches. I get the feeling there's gonna be a period of adjustment with him.

Bruce had another two hits in the Bats game, one of them a double. He's on a six game hitting streak right now with six extra base hits in that span, and his OPS is up near 1.000. At this point, I don't see any reason at all why he would be sent back down to AA, other than the fact that our GM is a moron.

And the final note from Louisville is that Chris Dickerson hit for the cycle tonight, getting his double with two outs in the ninth. I've never been high on him, but I think he'll probably get the call if Dunn is shipped out. I think he'll probably hit about .240 in the majors, but he can take a walk, has a little bit of pop, and has great speed and defensive ability. He has some value off the bench.

Here's what I see when I take a quick look at our new #4 on TheBaseballCube.com:

  • 6'2" 170 (skinny guy) lefty from the streets of Bakersfield
  • Duquette drafted him in the first round of the 2000 draft and then Theo later traded him to the Reds for Scott Williamson.
  • He gives up a lot of hits (8+ H/9 w/ 1.36 WHIP)
What else can anyone tell be about Phil?

Dumatrait
Fastball runs from 88-92, decent breaking ball (I believe it's a slider) and change. His homerun and hit rate have both improved this year, but his walk rate is still crappy and his strikeout rate has declined from where he was in the past. He turned 26 about two weeks ago, so his prospect status is basically gone after this year. I don't think he'll be much more than an inconsistent 5th starter type or decent lefty middle reliever in the long run, but he's done solidly enough in AAA to warrant a chance over Belisle. Still, he's the type of guy that would barely get mentioned in an organization with more decent minor league pitching than the Reds.

I don't know that he's too expensive or too risky
I would worry more about him not being all that good. His only two seasons with an above average ERA+ (and remember that ERA+ adjusts for park, so Coors would be taken into account) were his rookie season and last season. His rookie year, he had a 1.46 WHIP to go with his 108 ERA+, and last year he had a 1.37 WHIP to go with his 127 ERA+. His career WHIP is 1.54 and his career ERA+ is 102. His groundball tendencies would play well in GABP, but I'm just not sure he's a great option even when you solely take into account his performance and ignore the possible injury risk and inevitable fact that he'll be overpaid. My fairly conservative guess on what he gets is 4 years, $40 million, and I could easily see him getting more. Basically, I think we could probably get similar overall production if we re-signed Kyle Lohse, and Lohse comes with more upside and less injury risk (though I think everyone is exceedingly tired of Kyle Lohse right now and would really, really like him to get the hell off of this team).

If I'm spending money on a free agent starter, I'm going all out and taking a run at Zambrano. He's the only guy out there I can see being worth the money he'll get. I think we need to take a run at him, go after the unknown Japanese pitcher with a good reputation in Koji Uehara, or take the Jocketty approach and sign someone less appreciated like Joe Kennedy and hope he pans out. My ultimate preference is to move Junior for a decent starter, plug that person in the rotation next year, and then use the money that frees up to extend Dunn. I think Bruce should be ready by the middle of next year and very possibly the beginning of next year, and he could potentially fill in one of the outfield spots. And if we don't believe he's ready, there are a lot of solid free agent outfielders.

Also, on his weight,
milb.com has him listed at 200, and they're way more reliable than thebaseballcube. TBC usually puts a prospect's height and weight in when he first gets a page there (after the player's first season), and then that doesn't change. Dumatrait's been in the minors for 6 years, so the 170 he's listed at is probably not very accurate anymore.

Other Reds minor league news
After consecutive poor outings, Cueto came through with 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 7 K tonight. His ERA in six AA starts is at 2.23, with stellar peripherals across the board.

In Sarasota, Chris Valaika went 4-5 to extend his hitting streak to eight games, though his average is still only at .238 because of his horrible start.

In Dayton, Wayner waiver-wire pick-up Alexander Smit, a lefty claimed off of the Twins known for very good stuff with very poor control, made his third start in the Reds organization, allowing 8 baserunners and 4 runs (1 earned) in 4 innings, with only one strikeouts. Still, his ERA in Dayton is just 2.45, and I have to give Krivsky credit for making the pick-up. Another no risk, high reward move, though the reward is obviously much further away then Phillips and Hamilton were.

And in rookie ball, Neftali Soto had a double and two walks to go with his first steal of the season, and last year's third round pick Justin Reed, who struggled mightily in his pro debut, brought his average up to .309 and stole his 8th and 9th bases of the year. He's showing great athleticism and a good eye at the plate, a welcome improvement from last year.

You know what I just realized?
This series was the start of payback for 1999.  Brewers fans are starting to panic a bit.  Now, I'd definitely rather have the Brewers win the division over the Cubs, but it would be a bit of sweet revenge if the Reds can return the favor and keep the Brewers out of the playoffs much like in 1999.  The Reds still have 9 games left against them.  Hopefully it won't be a shell of the current squad being sent out there.
