Game Thread: Game 99 vs. the Brewers

TIME: 7:10 @ Great American

BREWERS PROBABLE:                      REDS PROBABLE:
Chris Capuano (5-6, 4.96)                Aaron Harang (10-2, 3.63)

This whole benching Edwin Encarnacion for Jeff Keppinger thing? Really, incredibly, mind bogglingly dumb.

Benching EdE
Um, why is this so stupid? He has a 707 OPS. He's hit, 6, count 'em, 6 home runs all season long. Keppinger, meanwhile, is on fire.

I love EdE's potential as much as the next guy. But he's been abysmal all year long, with the exception of those few games immediately after his demotion. Why coddle him?

by dcdanny on Jul 23, 2007 5:38 PM EDT reply actions

He's 24 years old
The Reds are completely out of the race.

Jeff Keppinger is 27 years old.

This isn't rocket science, unless you actually think the Reds have a shot this year. And if you think that then there's just no hope for you.

by TheDude @ Red Reporter on Jul 23, 2007 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

I am probably the only guy in RRville
who thinks that Keppinger should be playing over EdE. Edwin has a great great great upside - but right now (and in the future especially ) we've got have some guys who can hit for a higher average and Keppinger, right now is doing that. Here's a guy who had EARNED a shot at some playing time. He's 27 but he won't be the first late bloomer, E.G. George Foster was 26 or 27 when he finally got going.

Everybody loves Edwin. However when a guy is hot and has been knocking the cover off the ball all season it is only fair to let him show you what he can do.Edwin's year has been a difficult one - up and down in more ways than one. BUT I think Kepp is worth looking at.

I don't think that Griffey or Dunn will be dealt. Something tells me that Edwin will be. F.Vegas Alan

by Madville on Jul 23, 2007 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

I don't mind giving Keppinger a look
playing him over Edwin several times a week just doesn't seem to me to be the way to do it.

Edwin's numbers can (and will, I believe) improve, but not if he's sitting 3 days a week.

this far out
phillips could slide over to short with alex gone indefinitely, and both kepp and edwin could play everyday if they want to give him a real look.

by Daedalus on Jul 23, 2007 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh?
George Foster was 26 or 27 when he finally got going

George Foster had over 1500 career major league PA before he was 27, with a career OPS of .775 (OPS+ of 112); he was also MVP as a 27 year old.  Keppinger had, going into this year, 190 major league PA with an OPS+ of 80.  Jeff Keppinger in no way compares to George Foster.

Who's been a good player who was still a rookie as a 27 year old?  Even Jason Bay, poster child for late bloomers, had 1300 PA before he was 27.

just....wow.

I didn't take time to look it up and therefore
I was wrong about George. Sorry. But I still like the Keppinger is hitting now.

Okay, question.
Why has Keppinger batted second, but EdE never has?  It seems like that would make sense for him, with his speed and whatnot.

But what do I know?

Young guy does well for a few outings so we throw him in every single high leverage situation imaginable? I'm pretty sure we did. And I'm pretty sure it didn't work.

A quick summary to a long game
Harang - Incredibly incredible.
Ross - can't hit for average, BUT HR & SAC bunt
Burton - The Kid is alright
Javy - That Xtra playing time is paying off

FVA accounting - 6 Wins - 6 Losses  6 to go.
I'm still banking on 10 Wins out of the 18 game stretch that Fat Vegan Alan originally wrote about.

Caleb - I pretty much agree qbout EDE
when you asked "is his benching the precursor to a trade? because it really makes no sense to me to bench him." Edwin may be a goner or else he has an amazing ability to piss of managers. As long a Keppinger is hitting, though, play him. Sit Pedro down and let Kepp or BP play short. If Roy  Hamiltucky Hobbs were back I'd lead Keppinger off as he has the ability to get on base somewhat regularly..

2ndly - I hate to say it but you may be right about Freel. I too am beginning to wonder if he can play 145 or more games a season and be as effective as he's been as an incredible role player.

I don't think that Griffey or Dunn will be dealt. Something tells me that Edwin will be. F.Vegas Alan

Don't forget
The game that he matched C.C. Sabathia goose egg for goose egg and the Reds won 1-0 in the 14th.  Harang was his usual meastly self, and (like tonight) the bullpen shockingly didn't blow it for him.  The offense couldn't get him the win, but at least C.C. is a certifiable ace.  Oh, and Josh Hamilton gunned down the winning run at the plate when the runner attempted to tag from third, keeping the game alive.  One of the best games I've ever seen in person.

For what it's worth...
..MLBTradeRumors.com has a little donkey nugget this morning:

Teixeira Talk Heating Up

Ken Rosenthal has the latest on Mark Teixeira, who is now 50/50 to be dealt according to one source of his.

Rosenthal describes the scene as the Braves and Angels at the forefront, with the Yankees, Red Sox, and Giants lingering.  Evan Grant adds the Dodgers to the mix.  He also suggests the Rangers package Joaquin Benoit with Teixeira to get the best possible player.  Interestingly, the Yanks might be after Adam Dunn as another first base option.  They may have to focus on Dunn, because Jon Daniels is demanding Joba Chamberlain for Teixeira.

The Braves were really trying to shake things up; they would've done the Jon Garland for Edgar Renteria deal in tandem with a Teixeira acquisition.  The Garland proposal has been rejected, but Teixeira is very much alive.  Rosenthal describes the Braves as unwilling to trade Yunel Escobar and reluctant to trade Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  In my opinion, Salty is the more valuable player.  To me, Escobar for Teixeira is the right move.

I recently talked to ESPN's Keith Law about Escobar.  He told me the glove is there to play shortstop, but he worries about the bat.  Based on observation, Law could see Escobar developing into a .300 hitter with little power.

A nice afterthought
It's a lot nicer playing the Brewers when they don't have Bill Hall.

Oh, and I wish I had a locker somewhere, so I could tape pictures of Aaron Harang all over it.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 24, 2007 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

Uh oh...
From a report last Thursday:

Update: Hall (sprained ankle) took fly balls for the first time since going on the DL and did more running in the outfield on Wednesday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Recommendation: Hall says that he's back to full speed and intends to take some batting practice on Thursday. If all goes well then he should be back with the Brewers early next week.

by Gray on Jul 24, 2007 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, no worries (I think) for now...
As of last night:
OF Bill Hall started a rehab assignment with Milwaukee's rookie team in Arizona. He expects to play a couple of games to see how his right ankle feels. Hall has been on the DL since July 6 with a sprained ankle.

So I guess he could still be back for the Thursday game (or even Wednesday), but it looks unlikely.

That was my thought.
(I may have even posted something along those lines in some diary or thread sometime somewhere.)

If Hatteberg and/or Conine is/are traded, Valentin is going to get some additional PT at first until Votto comes up. And even after Votto comes up, he may not be given the job as the every day first basemen right away.

(I don't necessarily agree with it, but doesn't conventional baseball wisdom say that September call-ups should not be given starting jobs lest they might not handle the pressure of batting seventh for a team sixteen games under .500 and ranking twenty-somethingth in attendance?)
