Conine in the lineup
Welsh suspects because the Reds are playing in Florida.

Dammit, Mackanin, quit the feel-good crap and put the best lineup out there.

The Reds made room for Kent Mercker to come off the DL by trading Cody Ross to the Florida Marlins today for a player to be named ("Some guy named Willis?" Ross joked) or cash.

I picked up the baseball prospectus book yesterday
I just finished the first chapter about an hour ago.  It was supposed to tell me who was better between Ruth and Bonds.  While the statistical information it gave me was stellar, the final answer seemed as if it were written by our own joe morgan.

I vehemently disagree...
Ruth played in a time before integration.  The level of competition he faced just can't be compared to what bonds has played against.

As the book says, if Babe Ruth played today, he would be Raul Mondesi.

I finished it...
They don't say Ruth was better.

They say.  Ruth was pretty good.  He could hit for power and do some things.

But Bonds, now he's a player too.  He can get on base with the best of them, and don't forget about his base running or defense either.

Both guys are excellent players to have on the team, but which one is better?  Only time will tell.

im refering to the graph where they show
the players' career RAR numbers:  ruth - 2065; bonds - 1966.

it was written a few years back, so bonds has made up some ground.  you are right, they do say bonds has a few years left to make it up, but when i said "ruth was better" i was refering to that part.

i didnt take to these stats too well anyway, because they didnt really explain how they adjusted for playing in different eras, especially the whole thing about integration.  i just plain dont like bonds anyway either.

I respectfully disagree with your disagreement
While it is true that Ruth played before integration, it should also be pointed out that Ruth also played in an era when there were 8 AL teams.

My point here is that almost none of the pitchers that Barry Bonds has ever hit a home run off of would even have made Ruth's major leagues, regardless of their color. This is not to mention that the pitcher's mound was higher and I believe that the spitball was legal for a significant part of his career.

And just about the time that you think that Bonds is getting close to Ruth, look at the pitching record and remember that Ruth had something like a 29 inning scoreless streak in the World Series at one point in his career.

Of course, I'm being lazy tonight and not checking my numbers, but I think you will find that the gist of the argument stands up pretty well.

Ruth truly was an Everest in Kansas.

by Officer Dibble on Jul 22, 2007 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

tHan's argument,
which still smells like sarcasm, is usually a reply to your argument. Yes, there were only 8 AL teams. But what most people usually forget is that the talent pool is immensely larger now than it was 75 years ago (black Americans, South Americans, Caribbeans, Asians, etc. are all groups were previously not represented. It's not that people of those races are better, it's that there is now a talent pool of something like six times as big as before, more than offsetting the limited number of players in the 20s.) In addition, medicine and technology has advanced to a point where players can have longer and healthier careers.

There's no doubt that if you matched a team from today with a team from 1920, today's team would destroy the old team. That's not an abnormal thing. It's like that in every sport; players build off the successes of their predecessors. it doesnt take anything away from the fathers of the game, or mean that Babe Ruth is a bum. He is still the greatest player in the history of baseball.

it does, however, debunk the myth that the playing pool now is diluted. far from it.

this is why
i find it difficult to understand why people have a problem with "performance enhancers."  technology, better eating habits, protein shakes, batting cages,  video equipment, weight rooms, etc, etc, etc...all inflate today's numbers compared to ruth's time.  why are creams that make you heal faster any different?

it's moral relativism.  that's all.  those who say they "cheated" forget that Major League Baseball had no prohibition against these creams and clears.  people just thing "drugs" and automatically think "bad."  it's no different than those kids who are getting tommy john surgery to put a couple of mph on their fastballs.

by Daedalus on Jul 22, 2007 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not Sarcasm at all...
I really believe the integration argument has a lot of merit to it.

The book pointed out something interesting.  For every spot in the major leagues in Ruth's time there were 300,000 people to choose from.  For every sport in the Major Leagues now, there are 900,000 to choose from.  So it would reason that the pitching isn't really weaker.

Also, it pointed out something interesting.  When ruth played he didn't have to worry about hitting a curveball or a slider.  The more advanced pitching game of today, would likely hurt his offensive production.

Also Boobs, Barry Bonds is the greatest player in the history of baseball.

The ballpark argument isn't a good one
for Ruth people.

The ballparks he played in during his career, actually rate better for hitters than the ones Bonds has played in.

Nope...
The lifetime park factors in homeruns for Ruth were 105.5

The lifetime park factors in homeruns for Bonds were 95.5.

The park factors are structured so that 100 represents an average ballpark.  Numbers above100 are favorable to hitter, while numbers below 100 favor pitchers.

So, Ruth actually played in parks that were quite a bit easier to hit homeruns in.

Holy guacamole
I thought I was looking at a story about yesterday's game.  :-(

I was not here because I was 1) poking around a cemetery looking for H.P. Lovecraft's grave and 2) behind enemy lines at the Bats game, where they snapped a five game losing streak by beating the PawSox about the head and neck.  Votto and Bruce did a lot of damage.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

H.P. Lovecraft's grave hunts YOU!
To gave upon it would be akin to the madness of seeing unnamed demons that were ancient when the universe was birthed.  The experience is not unlike a typical 8th inning.  Someone needs to rename the bullpen the Chtulhu, so that Mackanin can put in a call to the Chtulhu, and then unleash horrors on mankind that were inconceivable even to the most fevered madmen.

Actually, it turns out we were in the wrong cemetery.  We were in the Old North Burial Ground, and we thought we were in Swans Point Cemetery.  They are fairly close together.

I don't regret the trip, though.  The Old North Burial Ground is really cool.  And really, really old.

We'll probably go in search of Swans Point Cemetery tomorrow, if it doesn't rain too hard.  While we're there, I want to go back to the North Burial Ground.
