Reds wouldn't discuss trading Hatteberg

Yep, you read that right.

From Gammons' Blog: "There is a lot of action on Kyle Lohse," says one scout of the Reds RHP. "He's always been a tease, but he's viewed as a big arm that could click." Cincinnati is reluctant to even discuss trading David Weathers or Scott Hatteberg, who would have been perfect for the Yankees had they been willing to discuss him.

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=gammons_peter

We all knew about Lohse. And  I thought we all knew trading Hatteberg was a foregone conclusion, if they could get someone to agree to the right deal. But, I would have never thought that they wouldn't trade Hatteberg.

How does keeping him make sense? The Reds need to give up the smoke-blowing about still being in the thick of things. They can't get back into the playoff race. (at least with the current crew as it stands) And with Votto ready, Hatteberg on this team beyond this year doesn't make sense.

Gammons makes no sense
I don't buy any of this.  Maybe Gammons misunderstood when Wayne said "I'm not discussing Hatteberg with you, Peter."

yeah
when he said "wouldnt discuss," that was my impression, too. The Reds have already said htat everyone is on the block except harang, phillips, hamilton, a-gon.. and maybe one or two others. but not hatteberg.

Gonzalez
Why is Alex Gonzalez not on the block?  Because we don't have another MLB-ready SS in the pipeline?

Maybe because of his contract?

dunno
im sure janish's defense would run circles around sea bass's. If a player's defense had legs, that is.

And if...
... running circles around another player's defense was a sure way to exhibit superiority.

Boobs, if I met you on the street and ran circles around you, would you recognize me as superior to you or would you think, "Who is this nutjob and why is he running circles around me and when will he stop?"

If you were Wayne Krivsky...
...and you knew that your Return on Trade Percentage was a measly .239 (compared to Billy Beane's league-leading RTP of 1.156) wouldn't you also be "reluctant to even discuss trading David Weathers or Scott Hatteberg"?

Ah, but
does Wayne Krivsky have the proper self-knowledge to recognize his own weaknesses?  Or does he conflate "self-knowledge" with the juvenile/Miyagi-esque "wax off"?

...it's a homonym.

If Conine and Hatteberg (especially Conine)
are still on this team come August 1st, I'll be pissed.

On another note, when did people decide Conine was having a good season? He's sucked pretty hard this year, in my opinion.

Get ready to be pissed
because i have a feeling that the reds won't make any trades this season.

Last month...
...I'd have said that Hatteberg was a good fit for the Yanks.  Now...I'm not so sure.  They called up Andy Phillips, and he's doing great.  And he's right-handed.  They may not need to trade for a first baseman after all.  I'm kind of hoping they don't, actually, because I like Andy.

OTOH, he went on a hot streak last year, too, then turned stone cold as they started to scout him.  So they may think he can't maintain this pace.

A different view....
If the Reds really are going to let Krivsky go at the end of the season and go after Jocketty, could it be that Krivsky's hands are tied by ownership so that he doesn't do anything foolish before getting the boot?

by jch24 on Jul 21, 2007 9:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

which would mean
that we've wasted an opportunity to improve our team for the future.  I really hope that's not the case.

by Blue on Jul 21, 2007 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope it's not true
But if this team doesn't make any trades, I'm gonna wonder.

by jch24 on Jul 21, 2007 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if this is true, what is the point of Krivsky?
That would be a horrible indictment of Castellini as owner - retain a GM that you don't want making trades? Awful.

I would think if that were true
Bob would fire Krivsky and install an interim GM.  Maybe Kullman would comeback, since he is this teams interim GM, and maybe he could find another Aaron Harang.

i wont be too upset
if there are no trades. we'll get draft compensation if hatteberg and/or lohse walk. if they go, great. if they dont, it's not the end of the world.

I think we've got a team option for next year
on Hatteberg.  And it's only for like 1.8 million.  I see no reason why we wouldn't use that.

I won't be surprised if:
Conine is still around.
But I will be surprised if Hatteberg is not traded. There are better fish in the sea for contenders who are looking to find a right handed bat off the bench than Conine. Hatteberg still has a couple of years left in him and he's cheap - somebody will pick him up. If not then maybe Krivsky will do something really stupid and trade Votto for a broken down starter and an injured reliever to be name later.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Edwin Inconception traded.
However at this point in time there is a really good chance that not a whole at all will be done as Wayne is hoping against hope that Bray and Eddie G. will soon be back and somehow things will work out.
Surprise us Wayne and do something exceptional - It is your job - so do it.

RE: feelings
For what it's worth..

I don't think that Griffey or Dunn will be dealt.

Something tells me that Edwin will be.
