IT would be movie like if he came back now!
Some how the Reds have roster space and Hamilton is coming up to the plate...swings and misses the first two pitches and then the next one is long gone...then he gets the save in the bottom of the inning

a regular position player for the Reds ever hit below the Mendoza .200 line?

Yes
Just depends on your cutoff...

If you make the cutoff 500 PAs though, the worst we've had is Bobby Tolan's .206 in 1973.

We've been put to shame...
I just went over to Talking Chop to see what the Braves fans thought about trading Salty, and I looked at their game thread.

This game that featured Smoltz vs. Harang, and it currently in it 14th inning, garnered a whopping 26 posts.

harang's no-love fest
mlb.com: "Smoltz shines in return from DL."

like Harang didn't pitch better?

instead of being one sided, why don't they just say "reds-braves battling in extras" or whatever corny title they want.  at least it would be equal.

by Daedalus on Jul 18, 2007 5:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That was how they billed it
before the game started, too.  The headline--maybe the blurb, too--mentioned Smoltz, no Harang.

I only had parts of the game on the radio but..

Is the shit over yet?
I was watching it with some Friends Who Are Braves Fans, but left after the 9th ended with the scored tied and Adam Mfing Dunn on the bench. Couldn't bear to watch, ran some errands, and just been reading through the game threads. fwiw, I really really like the Braves (and Chipper Jones). There are also a number of great Braves blogs; Talking Chop is not among them.

It's also fun to have Braves fans attempt to commiserate with me about the Reds bullpen. They're pulling their hair out over Wickman closing ahead of Soriano, who gave up the bomb to Dunn today, but who's been pretty filthy this year.

I do like Chipper (a lil' bit).
It's hard to not root for a guy that stays on one team for a lengthy period of time and gets better during the course of his time there.

But I kinda like nearly every MLB player.

Was it Carl Everett that evidently believed that dinosaurs never existed because they weren't in the bible?

I kinda liked that guy.

Carl Everett
That dude was/is CUH-RAYZEE.

by jch24 on Jul 18, 2007 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Everett
goes back and forth on the reasoning for this, but I believe his initial logic was that he doesn't believe in things he's never seen. Like Abraham Lincoln.

If you think about it, without the proper frame of reference, it is kind of bizarre that giant lizards once ruled the earth. And by "without the proper frame of reference," I mean never having scene Michael Douglas in a love scene.

It's painting season, and you've got a lot of stuff to paint.

Oh, by the way
From today's game preview:
The Reds (39-55) hung on to beat the Braves 6-5 on Tuesday despite giving up all five runs in the final two innings. They have not swept the Braves (50-44) in three games in Atlanta since April 13-16, 1990, and have not earned any three-game sweep against them since Sept. 2-4, 1996 in Cincinnati.

That game took years off my life
And if I had a laptop (or TV in my room), this game thread probably would have gone to three segments.

Big win for the boys today.  It almost makes you forget how well Harang pitched.  Nice to see Cancer with the continued heroics.  I am NOT looking forward to seeing the bullpen for the next week.

Something I did not learn from Gamecast:
From the AP writeup:
Cincinnati employed an unusual defense in the 10th to extend the game.

With Chipper Jones standing on third with one out and Francoeur about to hit, Reds interim manager Pete Mackanin moved center fielder Ryan Freel in front of the bag at second, and the strategy paid off.

Second baseman Phillips made a leaping catch of Francoeur's liner before throwing to third baseman Jeff Keppinger to force out Jones, who had moved down the line to score the winning run. Jones' RBI double earlier in the inning off David Weathers tied it at 3.

by Gray on Jul 18, 2007 6:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, the ol' five man infield
Quoth Chip Carey (or possibly Joe Simpson): "Pete Mackanin has made some interesting moves, which didn't work out.  Like having a five man infield.  That ended up working out."

Oh.  Cuz about five seconds before, you said it didn't work.  Perhaps because the ball wasn't hit directly to Freel?  I dunno, I'll take an inning-ending double play any day, particularly when there's a guy at third with one out.  Yikes, the TBS announcers were awful.
