My prediction:

Reds play .500 baseball the rest of the year, or at least show substantial improvement.

Pete Mackanin is given a contract extension.

Pete Mackanin is a horrible manager and is fired midway through the 2009 season.

Rinse and repeat.

Dave Miley was kaput. The Reds were inventing ways to lose. The bench coach, Jerry Narron was appointed interim manager. I said to myself "there's no way Jerry Freakin Narron is going to manage the Cincinnati Reds next year"

I met Pete

when he was an instructor in the Cubs organization. He swung through Huntington to work with the rookie leaguers from time to time. Nice guy and he knew what he was doing.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think this is going to make any difference. Even if they play a little better and "only" lose 92 games, as opposed to 102, does anyone honestly think this is going to make a difference for 2008? As aforementioned, I hope I'm wrong. I suppose it can't get any worse.

but I think it may not apply to interim managers who can be hired on full time. I don't believe the Reds interviewed anyone when Narron was hired.

worst/best cases

My fear is he'll be the same boss at the start of 2008, assuming he doesn't lose all of his games and can get the team to play a little better the rest of this season. If that happens, God help us, because the bullpen is still the bullpen, and our rotation (unless Bronson starts thinking about something more than partying at dorms and playing the guitar) is going to be what it is. And Griffey is going to be one year older. I would love to see ownership really come to the plate and bring in someone like a Bobby Valentine. But as noted, hopefully, I'm wrong about Pete. I am no optimist, but I do believe in giving someone an opportunity to fail before announcing the loss.

Yeah, I felt that way about Davey Johnson at first when he came to the Reds, because of his managing the '86 Mets (who I hated with an undying passion after Ray Knight sucker punched Eric Davis that year), but the man could flat out manage. I feel the same about Bobby.

This might sound simplistic and, well, dumb

but I know what I get with Narron, and I'm thinking that the players had little to no respect for the man, nice baseball guy or not. At least Mackanin gets a fresh crack. I feel like there is some hope for a future, not just repeted head-banging against a brick wall. This might turn out to be exactly the same thing that went on with Narron, but at least I can pretend for a little while.

...about Narron benching EE for not running hard to 1B, but not doing the same when Hamilton dogged it. Fay says the players very much noticed that.

So maybe Mackanin would get a fresh slate there, if the issue perceived unfairness.

Dunno about respect, though. I would think it's going to be pretty hard for a guy who was the advance scout at the start of the season, and might be again next season, to lay down the law if Narron couldn't.

If I recall correctly

I was trying to figure out how I could punch him in the face and not get arrested. While we are standing there, he was insulting my intelligence with his plan for right field, which at the time did not include the names Ken Griffey Jr. or Josh Hamilton, at least not in our conversation. I think at the exact instance that obc took this picture, he had mentioned that Dewayne Wise was a possibility. It hadn't registered in my brain yet, so you can't see the grimace that followed.

As far as I'm concerned, all the stuff about Narron benching EE etc. is jive. He was fired because the Reds stink and somebody had to take the fall so that the focus wouldn't fall--quite yet--on the real center of incompetence, Wayne K. Decision-makers screw up, people farther down the chain get the pink slips. What else is new in American management?

This is the response from Charlie at Bucs Dugout

He managed the Bucs for less than a month, all after rosters expanded and after the Bucs had dropped out of contention. Pretty much his first order of business was to move Jack Wilson from the No. 8 spot in the order - which is where McClendon was using him - to the No. 2 spot. Wilson didn't hit any better then than he does now, so that told me Mackanin didn't have much of a clue about lineup construction.

Mackanin's most important job with the Reds will be helping develop young guys like Homer Bailey, Hamilton and Encarnacion. I'm not sure whether he's any good in that area or not. The couple of times I can remember where actual advice he gave players made it into the paper, it was always like, "You need to relax and stop thinking so hard." It didn't seem like high-level thought. That obviously doesn't make him worse than most other managers, though.

So it sounds like a lot of the same that we've been used to. No word yet on his level of baseball guyness or if he's familiar with the right way to play the game.

Why not let Jerry Finish the season out before letting him go? The Bullpen as of now has the same shitty pitchers, the whole team lacks fundamentals still that can't be taught in the middle of the season. Was there really a need to do this now?

I wish there was a "missed the cut-off man" statistic, and would like to know just how many runs it has cost the Reds this year. My guess would be about 5.

On the other hand, the Reds offense is comparable with the Angels, as both are 4th in runs scored in their league. The Mets are 9th.

But, on a more philophical level, as far as advancing runners and not wasting outs goes, the game just ain't that easy. Most of the guys with good bat control can't hit worth a damn, and the guys who can hit well have no idea where the ball is going to go.

This team has the 2nd worst ERA in the NL. That is why its a bad team. It has next to nothing to do with "fundamentals", IMO.

I agree and disagree

I agree that the offense isn't a problem, which is why I believe we trade either Dunn or Griffey not both, God Forbid we might be 2nd or 3rd in the Majors in HRs and only be in the lower part of the top ten.

The Arguement about why I think the Reds Offense is not as efficent because they lack fundamentals will sound dumb but stay with me. Every player on this team including ones not named Dunn strike out with RISP and Sac Flys and Moving Runners to bases all that stuff Narron preeched never happened.

The 2002 Angels in my opion is one of the most effiecent offensive units, They had guys who made contact Eckstien, Erstand, Guys who Hit HRs Glaus and Salmon and they finished last in the MLB with striking out. I know People are going to say oh THom and Marty are brian washing you but they are right on this not that Dunn is the reason the team is losing but on this. So that is why this offense bugs me but hey if a team is going to suck why not entertain us with HRs

haha I said the pitching is cleary the biggest problem, but a team that depends on the HR as much as the reds do is like a basketball team that depends on 3 pointers. You Live and Die on both. Thats why you need a mutiple threat and different ways to score. I Don't care if the Red are tied with the Angels in runs produced the Angels can do it in so many different ways that it's much more efficent. Vlad G is the only guy on that team who can hit 40Hrs but they are doing alright. Damn good pitching teams who have solid batting!

out of that? I like Dunn as I metioned about the 2002 Angels they did have HR hitters Dunn would be Troy Glaus and Salmon and he is much better than both. The only thing I agree with Marty and Jeff on is he is a player who needs other hitters around him as every slugger. Look at Bonds he would have more RBIs if he didn't get walk every time but he has no one behind him. SO for those of you who say protection doesn't exist thats BS. Anyways I'm For Dunn but Sweaterpants clearly doens't want to build around him or Griff and since they have the most trade value you trade ONE of them. It's natural when things aren't working you try to change course I know most people like to see us trade Hopper for Jon Broxton...but that won't happen. So Griffey and Dunn as painful as it is to see one of both go if it is what has to be done the lets do it. But please don't say i'm Anti-Dunn that means you don't read my post :{

Did I say you don't know what's going on? What!? I said I didn't know what was going on because I had so much going on at once. You don't have to be Adam Dunn's biggest fan to be on this site - it's just that a lot of us who think Adam Dunn is good at baseball are sick of the argument that he is actually bad at baseball because of his K rate or because he doesn't hit sac flies, or because of how he hits with RISP. Everyone is free to dislike Dunn, you just have to explain why.

So see I didn't say Dunn Sucked I think the whole team sucks at that. Dunn is only 27 and has great power why would I hate that? So I don't have to explain why i hate him cause i don't. I got pissed in yesterdays game thread when Brantley singled out Dunn doing that when I've seen the whole team do it. think if this team had contact hitters around Dunn or Griffey the Offense would be Unstopable! haha Well i'm out big off day tomorow sorry for the mix up night.

Did you hear him today talking about how bad Dunn's defense is and that they should be trading "the leftfielder, not Griffey." And he jumped on Dunn after he let the ball get past him in the outfield. No mention though of the fact that Dunn'e error didn't end up costing the Reds anything. And no mention of the fact that it was Gonzalez' error that turned into a run.

But of course it's all Dunn's fault.

a protection aside

SO for those of you who say protection doesn't exist thats BS.

I kindly advise you to look closer into the claims about protection. If you like I can point you to some articles. To really investigate the claim of protection you have to do more than point at a player in a certain situation and say he would have more RBI were he protected. A proper study controls for as many variables as possible--say comparing Player A's stats when Player B batted behind him with Player A's stats when Player C batted behind him. Many smart people have done a lot of studies like this (but way more complicated) and found that yes, protection is pretty much a myth, at least a lot more than we used to think.

Could have had Girardi ??

A source told PA SportsTicker that Joe Girardi, the 2006 National League Manager of the Year with the Florida Marlins, twice interviewed for the Reds job this past week but turned the position down because he would have had to retain some of the current coaching staff.

Another reason to fire Krivsky now. Here's a more than capable manager prospect that everyone seemed to want. You could have cleaned out the whole coaching staff if you ask me.

I don't think I buy it

Girardi has said he'd only consider jobs in NY or Chicago. He's already turned down the Orioles and the Nats. I think he's hoping to manage the Yanks after Torre is fired or retires. (I'm pretty sure Torre is gone after this season, if he's not fired mid-season. Girardi and Mattingly are the frontrunners to replace him.)

I believe Girardi might have interviewed

for the job. But I don't think he ever seriously considered accepting. The coaching staff thing, if it's even true, was probably just an excuse.

It sounds strange to me

Though I guess if they wanted to avoid an interim manager, they had to do the interviews before the firing.

FWIW, Girardi was supposed to do the Baltimore-NY series last week. YES rearranged the schedule to give him those days off. Supposedly because it would be too awkward to have him broadcast the Baltimore games when he's just turned down a job managing them.

But maybe he was actually interviewing with Cincinnati on those days?

if they get rid of Ozzie, he could be there. He def doesn't want to come mid-season to a hapenless reds team. He is the Billy Donovan of Managers right now. I don't know why because the Marlins do have some nice young players and he could be a great manager but to think he is a savior without winning a world series and having one season of experience is a bit silly me thinks

if you have no intention of accepting? I'm a little suspect of a guy who's stated he'll only accept jobs in NYC and Chicago but who has interviewed for Baltimore and Cincinnati (and Washington?). Sounds like a negotiating ploy to me.

So let me get this straight

Everyone wants Girardi, but he's turned down jobs where he's already interviewed, citing that he wants to coach in either New York, or where? I forget... anyway, he comes here and interviews and it seems like he'd take the job, except that the Reds want to force him to retain some coaches. He's otherwise willing to manage here? Really? That must say something about the team, right? Like they have potential or something. But no, we're gonna make him keep certain coaches, so he's saying no.

I don't care if he's a reformed addict or not, he's a married man with a child. He's got responsibilities, and he's a professional baseball player. If the man can't get through life without Johnny Narron, (granted, I'm not a recovering addict, I'm not familiar with the hardships of the situation, my apologies if I'm underestimating the hardship) if he can't lean on his family or his friends and be a grownup and realize that he is in a business, and that this is a business decision, then, well... What I'm saying is that Josh Hamilton has a support network, and if it becomes the case that he will no longer have Johnny Narron to lean on in the same capacity, then he needs to do his best to work through the situation.

Very true, but I don't think Girardi is one of them.

He had no intention of taking the Orioles job, either, but he did interview with them. It's just the way things are done. You go on the interview, pretend that you're considering it, and regretfully decline. Even if you'd rather have a root canal with no anaesthesia than accept the job.

I don't think anyone except Hamilton can keep Hamilton from falling apart. But what the Reds think is another matter. They did send Johnny Narron with him on the minor league assignment, which is sort of unusual.

I don't think Hamilton is out of the woods yet. He doesn't trust himself to drive or carry enough money for lunch. But he's the only one who can keep himself on track. His parents, grandmother, wife and kids couldn't keep him sober before. If they couldn't do it, Johnny Narron won't be able to, either. It's up to Josh.

As for Hamilton, I agree. It's up to Josh. And I hope he can do it.

Firing

I was watching espn tonight when I saw Hargrove resigned, I joked it's because the Reds are going to fire Narron and hire Hargrove. Next item was the Reds fire Jerry Narron (which I did not know at the time).

This team has a lot of flaws and some are directly attributale to Jerry Narron and his coaching staff. I never liked the way Jerry mananged, heck I prefered Miley and the way he managed a game over Jerry Narron. If Castellini is serious about putting a winning team on the field he needs to put the right people in place and let them do their work. That probably means Wayne has the rest of the season and off season to do that. BTW is Jerry taking Juan Castro with him? Actually I only blame Jerry for playing Castro, I know sweaterpants signed him.

Some necessary and intelligent decisions:

1. Jerry is fired. A good guy but not the man for this job. There is no compelling reason that I can think of that he should have had one more day at the helm. He had lost the team some time ago and there was no way he could ever have regained the respect of the players.
2.Pete Mackanin has had a long and strong baseball management/coaching career. Although I would have loved to have see Billy Hatcher given a shot, Pete ultimately makes more sense. Mackanin has a rep for being tough and competent. He's been in this role before AND he's an outsider. Not a Red's outsider but a dugout/coach's coffee club outsider. With any luck he'll help right the ship a bit, help Krisksy get axed, and then gracefully step aside for a more dynamic and experienced Major league manager.

One down and One to go. Sad it is, I feel badly for Narron. However, Krivsky is the bigger problem , I can only hope that he is gone before he screws up the core of the team with more unproductive trades.

Not Krivsky related

there was a wild game in Chattanooga tonight. First off, Johnny Cueto went seven innings, allowing three hits and no runs. he struck out 13 and walked just 1. In his two starts there, he has allowed one run and eight hits with 3 walks and 19 strikeouts. So he's starting out with a 0.69 ERA. Dude's pretty exciting, and he's only 19. i'm starting to get pumped about this guy.

anyway, neither team scored until the mudcats scored one on a single. in the bottom half, there were 2 outs with Caonabo Cosme (who is badass right now, by the way) on second in a 2-0 count when it rained out. Theyre going to resume, same count and everything, tomorrow an hour before their scheduled game. That would be cool to see I think. It gives you a lot more reason to come out and see the game(s).

You know, it has suddenly occurred to me what the major problem with this organization is. For 5 years now, they have been stuck on trying to fix the little things. We constantly hear about how they need to play better fundamentals, move runners over, hit the cut-off man, etc. But all the while, the team suffers at one of the big things, pitching.

So far this year, here is a breakdown of the Reds record in runs scored and runs allowed situations: Reds NL Avg W L PCT W L PCT RS < 4 10 34 .227 12 33 .267 RS > 4 21 17 .553 28 8 .778 RA < 4 22 7 .759 27 7 .794 RA > 4 8 38 .174 8 30 .211

The Reds are pretty close to average in number of times scoring above and below 4 runs, doing slightly better at both, but not a significant amount. However, they are 8 games over the league average on giving up 5 or more runs. They've surrendered that many runs more than every team besides the Marlins in the NL. Even worse is the fact that they've given up 9 or more runs 16 times this year. That's at least 3 more times than any other team in the NL. Suffice to say, teams don't win too many of those games either (the Reds are 0-16).

So, rather than focusing all of our time on improving bunting so that we can score one more run here or there, why don't they spend more time on improving the pitching first, that way when the offense scores 5 runs or more, the Reds might actually be able to win a few of those games first. Once they get back to winning games they should have won, then they can focus on winning games they could have won.

It's not like Petey is going to come in as interim manager and say "The GM has no idea what good pitching is," or "The previous manager had some pretty whack ideas on how to use a bullpen."

BP's upset

From the Enquirer:

The players were not notified of the decision to fire Narron. Second baseman Brandon Phillips was upset today.

"Jerry did the best he could do. We had a lot of veterans. If he had different guys in there, we'd have different results,'' he said. "We didn't make any trades. We didn't fire anybody but get him fired. It sucks.''

Phillips said the team did well with Narron last year.

"But we had new guys come to the scene this year. He tried to adjust with the new guys this year, but it's all about certain players. Ken Griffey and his home run chase, Josh Hamilton and his comeback season, everybody got caught up in that instead of winning.

"We're happy for Josh, but we want to win. And the next thing you know, Homer Bailey's up here. We're a team, and everybody's worried about three guys."

That's an interesting set of quotes. Sounds a little bit like jealousy, but also sounds like a bunch of excuses. Hamilton and Griffey have both been good this year, so it's not like they are the problem even if they are a distraction. By the time Homer came up, the season was just about down the tubes anyway.

These quotes make me wonder though if there is a lot of unhappiness in the clubhouse that isn't getting out into the public.

go ahead and gut this team like a fish. Just shred the roster. How much worse could the outlook be? I know Sweaterpants has made some incredibly suspect moves in the past but this season he's done very little and they are one of the worst teams that I've seen (a case could be made that this is because of past moves). I ask again, could he do any worse by making everyone except Harang, Bailey, BP, Hamilton, and EE available?

Philips might have to be the No.3 Hitter for the Reds soon, Maybe too soon like after the All-Star Break if sweaterpants gets rid of Griff and Dunn. Which would be moronic but not surprising. Hamilton...I Still need to see a lil more, He has a great arm and power but he is only a rookie so i hope the contact comes around soon. Philips struggles with RISP so it will be interesting what takes place the next 2 weeks

doesn't make them dumb, I think Hamilton is having a good rookie season espiecally with all he had to overcome but I'm sure the contact will come around but he does so much more than hit it is quite impresssive and Phillips does not do with with RISP so I brought up two things I noticed. You make claims that have no basis in fact.

Hamilton's contact is fine. He's hitting a solid .270, he walks a ton, and his strikeout rate really isn't bad. In fact, he's behind only Griffey and our 1B platoon when it comes to hitting for average. The only problem Hamilton has had this year is hitting lefties, and he still gets on-base pretty solidly against them (.333 OBP). If you wanna find a fault in him, that's the one.

As for Phillips, he's just living proof that clutch players don't exist. He was a way better hitter with men on last year, while this year he's much better with the bases empty. It's not something that he really has much control over improving, especially when you look at the tiny sample size from this year anyways.

But in the end, my issue with you runs far deeper than these two "problems". I find essentially everything you post to be mind-numbingly idiotic. You show little to no sign of coherent thought, and you run behind a wall of "well it's just my opinion" whenever you get backlash for saying something stupid, when it's usually not an opinion at all -- simply an ignorance of statistics. Your "opinions", much like these statistics, seem to change on a day to day basis, but change or not you still fail at backing anything you say up. All I ask of you is a little bit of intelligent thought, because all you're doing know is cluttering up the place with the mindless idiocy possessed by your typical uneducated baseball fan. If I wanted to hear the idiotic drivel of those morons, I wouldn't bother coming here. But since I don't want to hear that, I ask that my little island of intelligent baseball paradise not be infested with fucktards. You're not obliging that request, so you're getting called on it.

Griffey wakes up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat thinking about that kid who owned him during an intra-squad scrimmage, but I will say to any opposing managers who happen to read this blog religiously, Griff swung right through two of my high, outside fastballs. Just a little tip. Of course, now that I think about it, there might have been men on base (with me pitching, I'm sure of it) and we all know none of the Reds' hitters can hit in the clutch. So, I'm positive that's the explanation for the strikeout. Geez... I always wondered how the hell that happened.

He's getting some support from the fans and some in the press, who say he just wants to win, and he's right, there should be more emphasis on team work.

OTOH, Trent says he won't talk to the press when he's not doing well, but is all smiles when he is, even if the team lost.

I was in Richmond picking up the kids today, when I got the call from Ash. I'm very glad she called, otherwise I wouldn't have realized what a great guy and manager Narron is. He'll manage again in the big leagues you know.

As for my take on the firing, I dunno. It's long long long overdue, but it doesn't really help the rest of the season. Is this new guy the right guy to help out Bailey and Votto in their first year in the big leagues? I'm pretty sure that he is in fact just an interim manager, and we'll get someone new next year.

I heard John Fay say on the radio today that Castellini wants to make a big splash, and our next manager will be either Joe Girardi, Tony LaRussa, or Joe Torre.

I don't know exactly what to think of that, but what I do know is that since Jerry got fired, it's time for Ash to get her Reds tattoo!

but it might be worth noting that Joey Votto didn't play today in Louisville.

In other minor league news, Louisville won 1-0 powered by 7 good innings by Bobby Livingston. The Bats have allowed just two runs in their past four games.

In Chattanooga, Carlos Fisher got knocked around again, for the third time in four starts. His hit rate has shot up and his strikeout rate has really dropped lately. Hopefully it's just an anomaly, but I get the feeling his first two months were more than likely the fluke. Jay Bruce also hit his fourth AA homer today.

Travis Wood struck out 9 but gave up four runs in 5.1 IP. He's been a big disappointment this year, first getting hurt and then sucking when he came back.

Also interesting from Sarasota's game is that Aaron Harang's little brother Daryl, who is 24, picked up the save and has a 2.48 ERA and sub-1.00 WHIP in 26 innings for Dunedin. Of course, he's repeating the level and really isn't much of a prospect, but seeing that name always catches me off guard.

In Dayton, the top four hitters in the lineup combined to get on base 15 times, including 3 hits and a walk by Drew Stubbs (luckily he made up for that by getting caught stealing once and getting picked off once) and four hits by Juan Francisco, as well as a homer by Chris Valaika.

And finally, in rookie ball, Neftali Soto continued his molestation of GCL pitching, going 3-5 with a triple. He's hitting .476 with 7 extra base hits in ten games so far.

when he came to Cincinnati. He was an overweight pitcher who's fastball just touched 90. I figured at best he would be a number 3 or 4 starter, I did not see him leading baseball in strikeouts.

He made 15 starts for Oakland in 2002 at the age of 24. He went 5-4 with a 4.83 ERA, 64 ks and 45 BB in 78.3 IP. He had better results at AA and AAA that year, but was traded to Cincinnati the following year after a good season at AAA Sacramento and a few meh starts in Oakland.

I have been wondering about putting Phillips in the cleanup spot for a while, and moving Edwin up to the 2-Hole. BP has more power, and Edwin has a better OBP (.351, to Brandon's .318). While its not a huge difference, it seems like Edwin finds more ways to get on base.

Speaking of OBP, anyone else notic that Jr.'s is as high as it has ever been since he has been in a Reds uni?

I worry about BP thinking he is a power hitter, but then again, with the way he is hitting lately, I don't particularly want him batting 2nd either.

On May 20th, his line was looking real good: .292/.337/.506

Since then, not so much: .240/.296/.425

He still has some pop, but that .296 OBP is not acceptable at the top of the lineup. I'd consider moving him to 5th or 6th.

As a note, EdE over that same time has put up: .312/.387/.457

After putting up that atrocious month of April, EdE is putting together a fine little season. I actually still prefer him in middle of the order because I think he's the best right-handed hitter on the team, April notwithstanding.
