Sweet
Harangutan and Dunner had better be on there, although I have a sneaking suspicion they won't.....

Is anyone else watching the selection show?
They are showing Fielder highlights, and one of them involved him getting hit in the groin with a throw to first.

wow
they just announced the final vote guys, and every one is a pitcher. what was the thinking behind that? that was probably the worst supplemental show of any sport i have ever seen. i nominate scott boras for mlb commissioner.

Gotta hand it to TLR
He did not pick any unnecessary Cardinals.  Hell, George Grande would have picked Eckstein or Rolen at least.  This has got to be the first time in a long time that the defending champion only has one All Star.

Carlos Zambrano being included on the
final vote list over Aaron Harang is a fucking joke.

Zambrano: 9-6, 4.20 ERA, 47 BB, 97 K, 1.33 WHIP
Harang: 8-2, 3.80 ERA, 29 BB, 116 K, 1.18 WHIP

I am seriously so incensed about this right
now that I could punch someone in the face. Not only are his stats light years better than Zambrano's, they are nearly IDENTICAL to Cole Hamels' - The only real difference being that Hamels has 16 more strikeouts.

Upset about Harang...
but there's a lot of very suspect decisions here.
People here in NYC are incensed about John Maine being snubbed:

9-4, 2.74 ERA, 38 BB, 84 K, 1.15 WHIP

Homerism aside, I can make a case that Maine deserves to be in there ahead of Hamels, Zambrano, or Harang.

I load LaRussa.

I'm just saying that when the writers only get 3 votes and ten other guys finish in front of him in the ERA race, I can see why he was left off of their ballots.  I don't think it's right, but why would we expect the writers to look at something more than wins and ERA?

Harang should be an All Star this year, and it's silly that he's not even on the final vote list, but oh well.

Rowand over Dunn
Rowand is the only CF on the bench.  But even disregarding that I think he's the better pick.  Rowand has not stopped hitting yet, putting up a 313/391/481, 128 OPS+ line and playing a very good CF (top VORP for NL CFers).  He gives up some power to Dunn obviously (267/357/568, 133 OPS+), but I think he deserves to go based on a better OBP and much better defense.

Fuentes on the roster over Harang, Oswalt, Young, Webb, Soriano, etc. is a joke.

Freddy Sanchez?!
Picked for what - winning the batting title last year?  Hitting 305/335/380, 90 OPS+.  No need for another Pitt rep with Gorzelanny on the roster, and with Hudson there's already another 2B.  BP: 269/317/463, 98 OPS+, with better speed and defense.  Sanchez is 12th in VORP for NL 2B this year.  12th.  I'd rather have another SS (Ramirez got shafted more than anyone).

Although I'd like to see what would have happened had Harang not given up 5 runs in his last outing. Since all of those bastards are so in love with ERA, could they have ignored an Aaron Harang with a sub-3.5 ERA? ...probably.

Cy Young
I beat this drum back in October, but I can't get angry about the Harang CYA vote (this all star snub is another matter). It's a little disingenuous to trumpet that he led the league in wins without mentioning that he tied with 5 other players. With the writers only getting three votes not all of the wins leaders could get some love (and the closers siphoning votes didn't help). Yes, he also led in strikeouts but he would have had the highest ERA ever for a Cy Young winner. I maintain Arroyo had the better year.

I don't think Harrang was close to being
the biggest snub, the reds are a last place small market team so that is a big factor why.

Orlando Caberea, Brett Harpe, Edgar Reteria and Jeremy Bonderman have more to complain about.

and how did Brian Funtes make the team?

I didn't say it was fair but most people on this blog see how baseball shouldn't change giving big market teams all the breaks it can rather than small. With that said I don't belive in the every team gets an All-Star Rule...Gene Meche and even Carl Crawford don't deserve to be in the game at all

ESPN
I'm a little confused about what you're saying, but I'll try to respond anyways.

The competitive field of MLB is clearly unbalanced. This used to bother me greatly, however things have improved with the last two labor contracts. Additionally smart small market teams have shown that it can be done. There's no salary cap coming so we have to live with it.

That said, the ESPN hate really confuses me. I'm no fan of the Worldwide Leader, but people get way too upset about it. Maybe it's because I have no interest in hearing the talking heads discuss the Reds, but I don't think that ESPN should give more coverage to our beloved team that hasn't had a winning record in 7 years. Does anyone think a national audience would rather see Cincinnati play on Sunday night than Yanks-Sox?

The all star selection raises this point again. How is ESPN purported to influence the players' and managers' selections? There have been egregious all star snubs as long as there have been all star games (one year some team's fans voted in like, their whole lineup). You can't lay this on Bristol.

by Red Menace on Jul 2, 2007 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah that monday night football thing
isn't doing so well, who wants to see Indy play Cincy, who wants to see KC play Denver...I like ESPN too but to say the MLB has the same competive balance? not sure about that sure you have teams like the INdians in the 90 but let's see Yankees 26 World series, St Louis is second with 9. After 1990 where did Randy M, Paul O'Neil and others go to play. NFLs salary cap lets most teams keep star players and is more strategy based than baseball is now. THink how good Oakland and the twins would be with a sallary cap. I know someone brought up how the NFL has only had one more team in the superbowl than the world series the past 10 years but the patriots have been there 3 times and won it 3 times but didn't buy the best players to do it.
"Yeah, well the Reds were first in spring training this year"-My friend after a Red Sox fan said the Reds suck.

by Zach K on Jul 2, 2007 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I must not be explaining myself well
I'm going bullet-point:

*I don't actually like ESPN. Not even a little bit. I just think a lot of the hate is unwarranted.

*MLB does not have competitive balance. It's unfair. It's certainly nothing like the NFL.

*It's been unfair throughout it's history, but things got especially bad in the late 90s when local TV contracts exploded.

*Since then the luxury tax has made a difference. Teams like Oakland and Minnesota have shown small markets can succeed to some degree. Teams like Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay have undermined calls for additional revenue sharing.

*Baseball will never have a balanced playing field so I don't bother calling for one.

*Aside from these issues of competitive balance, I see no reason to constantly snipe at ESPN like a lot of people do. They focus on the best teams and interesting matchups (tonight's game was Detroit-Minnesota). I don't think they affect the ASG selections. Also they're idiots.

Had the change in manager been orchestrated
properly and in a more timely manner, Red Mennace would be thinking about which players he would be choosing for the 2008 ASG to fill out the roster. With Narron gone and a professional interim manager in place, RM will be named Red's manager before the 2007 World Series. ( You really should think about Paul as your bench coach).

I've been thinking about this...
I think I'd be a better GM than manager, despite the fact that the decisions a GM makes are often very hard and the decisions a manager makes are very easy. Malcolm Gladwell makes a pretty good case here that the average fan would be a better GM than the bad ones.

As for managing, the players wouldn't respect me one bit. I can't really imagine a group of people I'd have a harder time communicating with than professional baseball players. The only advantage I could possible offer is speaking Spanish to the Latinos.

You can see here how much Leyland and Larussa's hands were tied. Leyland didn't add any Tigers and only took V-Mart and Johan after filling his quotas. Larussa only picked Pujols to fill the Cards hole, and added Saito, Wagner, Valverde and Rowand.

Biggest Snubs in the NL
Here is how to fix the problem

NO Brian Funtes GET Tom Gorzeally

NO Freddy Sanzhez GET Edgar Reteria

NO John Smotz GET Chris Young

Harrang gets a shit load of Run Suport and has a higher ERA than both, I love the guy and he is a good pitcher but I think Young has a much better case so does Edgar. Gorzeally is the Lone Pirate to get rid of an All-Star Closer who isn't a closer any more...

"Yeah, well the Reds were first in spring training this year"-My friend after a Red Sox fan said the Reds suck.

I've been disagreeing with you a lot lately
so I'll mention that this sounds pretty good. I might also swap Aaron Rowand for Eric Byrnes.
