Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

10 To Dos

  1. Skip Bronson's next start.  The Reds don't need a 5th starter until July 7th.  Take advantage of this and get Bronson rested up.  This moving him back one day crap isn't going to help in the long run.  Also, consider skipping a start from Kyle Lohse as well.  I don't know if it will help, but it might make me feel better, for one game at least.
  2. Dump Juan Castro and bring up Jeff Keppinger.  This should be obvious.  Right now, Castro is not better defensively than anyone on the infield and his offense is downright offensive. (Ha!  Did you see what I did there?  offense is offensive.  Yes!)  Castro has been used as a pinch hitter 13 times this year.  That's about 13 more times than he should be.  I don't know how good Keppinger is defensively, but his bat will more than make up for it compared to Castro.
  3. Dump Chad Moeller or Javy Valentin.  Enough with the three catchers.  It hasn't been a factor at all this season, and now Moeller is being used frequently as a pinch hitter too.  His 13 PH at bats is about 20 more times than he should be used as a PH.  Valentin has been on the team since opening day and has 78 plate appearances, and this is with a starting catcher that is batting under .200.  If you are not going to use him, then lose him and bring in somebody who will get used.  If Valentin is dropped, then the only real option in the system right now is switch-hitter Mark Bellhorn as a lefty off of the bench.  Of course, as lefties go, he's a pretty good right-handed hitter.  I guess what I'm saying is, drop Moeller.
  4. Send Jon Coutlangus down for some rest.  He has pitched in 10 of the last 13 days.  Please send him down before Jerry kills him.
  5. Bring up Calvin Medlock.  He's not a lefty, but lefties are hitting .161 off him in Chattanooga.  He would be ample replacement for Coutlangus while he is on R&R in Louisville.
  6. Stop pitching Todd Coffey after the 7th inning.  His head is clearly screwed up.  If he's going to be on the MLB roster, he needs to stop being put into situations where he can hurt the team.  Help him get better.  He has the talent, figure out how to get the good results back.
  7. Trade Scott Hatteberg for some bullpen help.  I like Hatteberg, so it's a shame that he would be the one that has to go, but the truth is that he is the most easily replaceable starter and there's a chance he could bring some help for this season.  I have no idea who he would go to or who he would bring in return, but given what relievers were going for last season, he should be enough to get a 7th or 8th inning guy that can get some outs now and then.
  8. Ask the announcers to actually promote some of the players every once in a while.  I know the team is bad, and I don't want an announcer that blows smoke up my arse, but not everyone on this team is totally hateable.  Maybe if the announcers took one inning every game to talk about what one player does well, people might start to believe that this team won't suck for all eternity.
  9. Some will say fire Jerry Narron, but I say fire Dr. Kremchek. The guy may be a helluva surgeon, but his record on diagnoses is not so stellar.  Plus, he was the team doctor for the Nationals when they traded an injured Gary Majewski to the Reds.  Why does he still have a job?
  10. Free tickets for all Red Reporters.  If you want a happy fan base, this is the best way to get there.

This is the first time Ive said this
but I believe the time has come to fire Jerry. Earlier in the year I would say keep him around just so Johny could keep up with Hobbs. But he is clearly hurting the team with the use of the bullpen bench. These might be small issues, but they wont be when 1 or 2 of our young guys in the pen blow out their arms this season from overuse. Also I can take the 3 catchers or castro pinch hitting. A compent manager would not put up with these things. Especially when we have a Keppinger and Herr in the minors that we could replace them with.

I am really fearing what our team might look like
Come September if we trade Dunn, and Griffey were to get hurt.  Imagine an outfield of Wise-Hamilton-Hopper.

I bet we see it in a crapfest before the year is over.

I'd guess that Bruce will start next year in AAA and be called up around June, just like Homer.

barring any unforeseen setbacks in his progress, he should be in Cincinnati by next September, methinks.

Probably
I would imagine with the way they are treating Votto that no matter how well Bruce does at AA he will be there for the rest of the year. Then he probably will have to do at least a 1/2 of AAA. If he hits at AA I would be really interested to see what that did to the Dunn and JR speculation.

yep, it's impressive
The problem is that he is repeating AA this year, for some inconceivable reason.  Last year he threw 63.2 innings there, striking out 70, walking 28 and allowing just 4 home runs for a 2.97 ERA and 1.29 WHIP.  That should have been enough to get promoted, especially since he's now 24.  So, part of the reason he did so well at Chattanooga this year is because he had already proven that he was better than that level.  He should have been developing more at Louisville this year and possibly at the MLB level.  Thankfully, the Reds haven't needed any help in the bullpen or this would have looked really stupid.

BTW, he finally got promoted to Louisville yesterday.

What's weird is that he's obviously on the Reds radar since he's been on the 40-man roster all year, but for some reason they didn't like him enough to put him in Louisville to start the season.

John Sickels graded Medlock a C before the season started, calling him a useful spare part.  He was rated the 13th best prospect in the system, just behind Jon Coutlangus.  Both move up at least one spot though since Milton Loo "retired". :)

Keep Dunn and Griffey.  Trade or sign a 3 quality relief pitchers for next season, preferably one a closer, or potential closer.  If one starting pitcher can be added to that, this team is good to go.  Please step up to the plate Bob.

Sly-dog
  1. Bronson needs a rest. Too bad we don't have pitching coach who can help him out of his funk.
  2. Agreed Don Juan should be gone. Castro hasn't been successful either offesnsively or as a defensive replacement, although he seems to be a pretty amusing guy.Maybe they keep him around for comic relief. (No they've already got the bullpen for that).
  3. Chad is bad. Javy is still a pretty decent pinch hitter. Maybe he could be back-up catcher, pinch hitter and back-up 1st baseman.I've never bought in to 3 catchers either. I can count on one hand the number of times that I've seen in 50 years of watching baseball, that a 3 rd catcher has been needed. Even the need for 2 catchers for when the starter gets hurt or thrown out of a game is pretty rare.
  4. Coutlangus has good stuff - too bad we don't have apitching coach that is able too help get back on track. Sit him down - don't need to send him down.Unless his head is so messed up that he needs to have some success to get going again.
5.Sounds good to me
6.See comments regarding the pitching coach.
  1. I said the same thing the other day when I suggeted not blowing up the team. I too feel that he could bring a better relief pitcher than the ones we have now. Bring up Votto, let him gethis feet wet.
  2. I really can't abide with Thom Brenneman's caustic, condescending and uniformed prattle. Marty is Marty - Brantly blabs too much (but I like him) and Chris has been poisned by Thom....now if they could just complete George's lobotomy.
9.I say that a lot of the above could have been avoided if Jerry Narron had been fired earlier in the season.
How can any team use the same Dr. to authorize the medical condition of a player for both teams in a trade situation. I blame Wayne Krivsky.
  1. Free tickets for all RR's and another 15% off as well.
  2. Another to do - lets have the General manager do his job and get another reliever, bring up the kids like Votto etc. and keep the core together. Narron was quoted as saying that the Reds were very close to being a pretty good team (something like that)today in the paper.Even though he's not as great manager, he's been around for a long time and I agree with him on this. Maybe one or two pitchers away from being a decent team.

Reliable
Griffey has a history with manager Lou Piniella and is unhappy in Cincinnati, where he was moved from center field to right this year.  Not only are the Reds shopping him, but he has said privately to those close to him that he would welcome a move to Chicago.

Yep, he bitches about it after every game.  That's all he'll talk about.  Moving to RF crushed him.  He's one miserable SOB.  It's funny how media types in other cities always have an inside source with our players, but local news guys never seem to (except maybe Hal).

The Big Apple grapevine...
...is saying something similar.  FWIW, which may be nothing.

The people who usually know things are saying that Hatteberg and Dunn are just a smokescreen.  It's Griffey who is really on the block, at least partly because he wants to be traded.

I personally do not see a fit with the Yankees.  They have a ton of aging superstars already, and need a first baseman more than an outfielder.

Steinbrenner does like to collect superstars who are about to hit milestones, so they can hit them in pinstripes.  That's the only reason I can see the Yanks trading for Griffey.

Right-handed would be better, but they're not in a position to be picky.  With Scrabble on the DL for a month or two, Phelps DFA'd, and Giambi likely out for the season, they could use a first baseman who is not Andy Phillips.  I like Andy, but I think he's going to have a very short leash.  He struck out on three pitches and GIDP last night, so he may be headed back to Scranton soon.

i would like to point out
that juan castro is the worst hitter, according to 2007 win shares, the reds have. worse than every pitcher.

also, and i find this amazing, castro has 36 career win shares. since the stat is adjusted by a factor of 3, that menas castro has accounted for about 12 wins in his career -- less than one win per season. He averages about 70 games per season, btw. And almost all of his win shares come on the field.

im sorry to pick on the guy who cant help it he's not a great baseball talent, but this is the guy narron chose to bat instead of josh hamilton, who is OPS+ing 116 right now in his rookie season. Castro has a career OPS+ of 58 and a high, in his 13-year career, of 75. Juan Castro wouldn't pinch hit himself in that situation, were he player/manager*

With
Bruce being promoted to AA today I think I would take a look at moving Jr. He is having a great year and his trade value should be pretty high if  he were to go to an AL team where he could play outfield and DH. You also get a fan attraction because Jr will be running down Mcguire, Sosa, Robinson and the like in the next couple of years. If I were Wayne I think I would try to move him and make a spot for Bruce next year in right.

One more thing to do
Pick your jaw up off the ground every time Hamilton makes a throw.  ESPN.com put out a list today of the top 9 outfield arms.  These lists are generally pretty worthless, but it's nice to see if anyone on the Reds is getting national attention.  Check out the comparison they make.  (He was Number 6, by the way)

"Josh Hamilton, Reds

All of Hamilton's wondrous skills were on display in a 9-3 victory over Colorado on May 6. He hit two homers, made a fine running catch on Hawpe and threw out the fleet Willy Taveras going first to third.
Reds manager Jerry Narron has compared Hamilton to Bo Jackson athletically, although Roy Hobbs also would do nicely. As a thrower, Hamilton's only drawback is a slightly long release.

Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman, in his 34th season in the booth, watches Hamilton and sees a throwback to Dave Parker, Ellis Valentine and other powerful throwers who've passed through Cincinnati as Reds or visiting players through the years.

"His throws are so precise, it's mind-boggling,'' Brennaman said. "He'll unfailingly give the catcher a throw on a bounce he can handle. It's unreal.''"

* * *

I was at the game where he threw out the Indians runner trying to score from third on a sac fly in the top of the 12th.  It was, perhaps, the best throw I've seen.  The runner was out by a good ten feet.  Of everything there is to like about Hamilton, I'm always excited by his arm.

Oh, and a note of kudos to David Ross too.  It's been noticed, but he's holding onto throws much better this year.

Still have a job?  He got an extension in the offseason.  Has any media ever asked Krivsky the hard questions pertaining to Kremchek?  I've never heard why Kremchek kept his job after the Majewski fiasco, let alone get the extension.

I heard Kremchek do an interview on WLW once, and he was VERY defensive.  The questions were primarily focused on Griffey's injury last April and why it took so long to do an MRI.

milton bradley
i hope this isnt true, but milton bradley could be the final step before an adam dunn trade to oakland, per my mike piazza theory. bradley could come to us as a rest-of-the-year replacement (a la royce clayton) along with a battery of a few spare parts for dunn. Dunn would slide into LF/DH/1B duties in oakland, piazza takes over at catcher, cust DHes and plays LF and swisher takes over mostly in centerfield, with buck in right. this could seriously happen. im thinking bradley/suzuki/jason windsor for dunn. we'll see.

Griffey/Dunn
ive said for a while that we should trade dunn now while we can get something for him.  but i am officially changing my mind, and i now think we should keep ahold of him.  at least see if we can sign him to a long term deal, im thinking something like carlos lee got.  it really isnt that much more than we are giving him now, and with the milton albatross off the books after this year it is certainly doable.  if he doesnt want to resign, then we can get rid of him.  dunn to oakland for suzuki is not a good idea.  we need a bit more than that.  i liked the idea of him going to the angels for kendrick and santana, it shows krivsky isnt in this just to unload him.  unlike most, i still have a bit of faith that he can pull off a decent deal, if it comes to that.

i do think, however, we should move griffey asap, preferably before he tears a quad or a glute or a cloit or something.  he's having a hell of a year and could bring a good haul from a desperate contender.

but most of all, we need to fire narron.  dude's gotta clean up.  this is just sloppy.  i started laugh-crying when castro came in for hamilton.  when i realized i wasnt surprised, i realized jerry's gotta go.

Before that could occur, the Reds must DFA Burton, he must clear waivers, the A's have to buy him back, and then he can be traded.

Is that true?
I thought the Reds could just give him back to the A's with some money and then they could make the deal.  I didn't think waivers came in to play on a Rule 5 pick.

From wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_5_draft

Players who are not currently on their team's 40-man roster are eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft, but only after a standard exemption period has elapsed. Players signed at age 19 or older are exempt from the Rule 5 draft for four years after being drafted (in the amateur draft) or signed by their current organization; players drafted or signed at age 18 or younger are exempt for five years. For example, players drafted in 2004 (or later) at age 19 (or older) will be exempt from the 2007 Rule 5 draft, as will players drafted in 2003 (or later) at age 18 (or younger).

The exemption periods were extended by one year in October, 2006, as part of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The change took effect immediately, exempting many players from the 2006 Rule 5 draft even though they had been signed in some cases more than four years before the new agreement came into effect. Prior to the rule change, players were exempt for three or four years after the year they were signed (regardless of the year they were drafted), rather than four or five years.

If chosen in the Rule 5 draft, a player must be kept on the selecting team's 25-man major league roster for the entire season after the draft--he may not be optioned or designated to the minors. The selecting team may, at any time, waive the Rule 5 draftee. If a Rule 5 draftee clears waivers by not signing with a new MLB team, he must be offered back to the original team, effectively canceling the Rule 5 draft choice. Once a Rule 5 draftee spends an entire season on his new team's 25-man roster, his status reverts to normal and he may be optioned or designated for assignment.

No see,
If that was the case, teams could tamper with the draft.  Who is not to say a team that was in draft order behind the Reds didn't want Burton?  They have to be given that opportunity if Burton was waived.  Otherwise, teams could cut this type of deal all the time to avoid losing their fringe 40-Man Roster guys.

For example, the Reds could of plucked Burton and offered him back a week after the draft.  All the teams after Burton would have not gotten a chance to draft him, Burton would stay an A.  It would almost be like scamming the whole idea of the Rule 5 draft.

but the original team
would just buy him back and put him in their system. if we would have offered hamilton back to tampa bay a week later, they would have jumped at hte offer in hopes a 40-man spot would open back up for him. guys in the rule v draft are often talenetd guys that teams are just hoping get through.

the rules still apply to the team acquiring him via waivers; they'd have to put him on the 25-man roster.

Maybe they could if they kept them on the 25-Man, but otherwise it could scam the whole idea of the Rule 5.

Plus who would give up prospects if you could possibly get him back for 25,000.

because
the point of sending him back to oakland would be to void the rule 5 rules. you cant just trade him back and say all bets are off. i think the protocol is to offer him back for the $25,000, and he has to clear waivers apparently, and then it's done. he's no longer bound to remain on anyone's 25-man roster.

did a little more looking around
http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html

A player drafted onto a Major League roster in the Rule 5 draft must remain in the majors (on the 25-man active roster or the DL) for all of the subsequent season, or the drafting club must attempt to return him to his original club. However, since a returned Rule 5 player must first be placed on outright waivers, a third club could claim the player off waivers. But of course, that club would then also have to keep him in the majors all season, or offer him back to his original club.

but then theres this:

Occasionally, the drafting club will work out a trade with the player's original team, allowing the drafting club to retain the player but send him to the minors.

Im thoroughly confused as to whether the players has to clear waivers, but even if thats the case, he would probably go through. at this point in the season, rosters are much more set than they are in the offseason, and there arent as many teams willing to put a rule 5 guy on their roster all season. so, i guess what im saying is, even if burton did have to clear waivers before the reds acquired the right to send him to the minors, that wouldnt be a big hurdle.

The Yankees just DFA'd their Rule 5 pick, Josh Phelps.  Nice stick, but the glove is so horrible the bat can't make up for it.

Anyway, Phelps has to clear waivers.  They don't expect him to, but if he does, the Orioles can buy him back.

Not true
That would be the situation if the Reds wanted to keep him in the minors this year. They would have to offer him back to Oak, if they said no then he would have to clear waivers in order to be sent to the minors. If the Reds wanted him to be part of a trade with the A's they would just send him back to the A's, pay whatever amount they have to, and then the A's would trade him back.

excellent post
I really thought you did a good job of presenting a fair overview of your opinions.  I still want Dunn to be traded.  Perhaps it is just my mounting frustration but I get tired of the one-dimensional nature of our team; lots of home runs but tons of strike-outs, poor clutch hitting, and impatient hitters.  Dunn represents those things to me so I trade him if we get some decent return.
You said you wouldn't trade Dunn just for Suzuki.  I agree with that but do you have a scouting report on Suzuki?  How good is he supposed to be?  Would you change your mind if Bradley and a young pitcher were included?
I have gone back and forth over trading Griffey.  I completely understand your thoughts on him getting injured.  However, maybe the move to RF has had the desired effect: less injuries for Griffey.  I also like seeing him go for 600 HR.  However, if a team blew me away, I would consider it.  I just wouldn't trade him for something less than some IMPACT prospects or players.

Would love your take on all this.

i think we can all agree that we need to get a great haul in return for dunn, if traded.  you are right, he is the epitomy of whats wrong with our offense.  too many strikeouts and poor performance w/RISP.  the real sticking point of this is that in the current market, there is no possible way to match his production for cost.  for all the flaws in his game, he's still the best bat in the lineup and is irreplacable.

i dont have much info on kurt suzuki, but i think we can reasonably assume that he is not the next pudge rodriguez, which would be the only way i would make such a deal.  if we deal him, we gotta get a slam dunk, bona fide, straight-outta-compton baller in return.  plus a great pitching prospect.  the one thing we have to remember is that we do not NEED to deal him.  we still got him for another year at a good price.  i say shoot for the moon and dont settle for less.

i love that griffey is having a great year.  there is nothing better than good things happening for good people.  i would love to see him hit 600.  i was actually in cleveland a few years ago when he hit 499 and in his next at bat fell a foot short of 500.  it was unforgetable.  but the dude is still old.  and this is not a barry larkin situation, where it would be a sin against God Almighty if he were to retire with a different team.  we may be able to get some good stuff in return for him, and if the right deal came up we should jump at it.  the best part of this situation is that we do not need to go into firesale mode at any point this season.  the only heavy, cumbersome contract we have is milton, and there is nothing we can do with that.  its nothing like the white sox, where they have to move players now.

we are not pressed to do anything, and i think that is the best position this team could have hoped for.  of course, we should move hatte, conine, weathers, and even stanton if someone will take him.  we just need to play it cool.  its a sellers market, and krivsky should play the hell out of it.  i still think he can handle it, but if he doesnt we'll all know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a moron.  oh, and fire jerry narron.

i just mean
that all the strikeouts and bad hitting w/RISP is what is keeping this offense from putting up 1000 runs.  now, that said, dunn is still the best bat on this team.  we should keep him long-term.  sign him to an extension tomorrow and i'll shout to the heavens in exultation.  but he still aint perfect.  just lamenting i guess.

so what? strikeouts are vastly overrated, and dunn is not a bad hitter with RISP (.884 career OPS with RISP, .895 overall). it's well-documented, as is this argument.

for Charlie
I meant to reply to your post, just so you know.  See my other post, which should be right above this one.  :)

ive said for a while that we should trade dunn now while we can get something for him.  but i am officially changing my mind, and i now think we should keep ahold of him.  at least see if we can sign him to a long term deal, im thinking something like carlos lee got.  it really isnt that much more than we are giving him now, and with the milton albatross off the books after this year it is certainly doable.  if he doesnt want to resign, then we can get rid of him.  dunn to oakland for suzuki is not a good idea.  we need a bit more than that.  i liked the idea of him going to the angels for kendrick and santana, it shows krivsky isnt in this just to unload him.  unlike most, i still have a bit of faith that he can pull off a decent deal, if it comes to that.

i do think, however, we should move griffey asap, preferably before he tears a quad or a glute or a cloit or something.  he's having a hell of a year and could bring a good haul from a desperate contender.

but most of all, we need to fire narron.  dude's gotta clean up.  this is just sloppy.  i started laugh-crying when castro came in for hamilton.  when i realized i wasnt surprised, i realized jerry's gotta go.
