Bengals to sign Reds draftee?
Nebraska shortstop Ryn Wehrle was dismissed from the Cornhusker team on Sunday. The immediate cause of the dismissal was his removal from the Saturday game for not running out a flyball; however, as Coach Mike Anderson made plain in an interview with the Omaha Journal Star, this was just the straw that broke the camel's back. He said he had been giving Wehrle chances for years to come in line with program behavior expectations and Wehrle just never made the change. Some of Wehrle's teammates approached Anderson earlier and expressed their frustration. Wehrle explained he was "confused" as to why he had been dismissed. Apparently it takes a little more than four years for him to bother to figure out what is expected of him and he hadn't quite tuned in yet this year.
Wehrle was a 3rd team All-American last year and an 18th round draft choice by the Reds. He turned down a six figure signing bonus to return to Nebraska. 2007 has been a horrible year for him. He ends the year with a .241 batting average and 18 RBI's.
I believe the Reds lost rights to Wehrle when he returned to Nebraska. I am sure after reading this story the Bengals will attempt to work out a contract with him and teach him to play football. After all, how often does a player with such a perfect character make-up for the team become available?
