I can deal with this.  I think Dunn can do a lot of damage down in the order, and I wouldn't oppose a move to 7th.

Game Recap
It's a developing story, so there isn't much out there.  And BB2N already covered it because Bergmann almost threw a no hitter.  Here's the game recap.

http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/gamecenter/recap/MLB_20070514_ATL@WAS

Kearns was trying to avoid Smoltz.  Smoltz tagged him and immediately started jumping around and threw his glove down on the ground.  Then Smoltz was seen flailing his forearm out as if bitch about what Kearns did.  But the replay clearly shows Kearns really just giving up on the play.  In fact, as soon as Smoltz started screaming, Kearns froze as if he didn't know what happened.

by Brian B on May 14, 2007 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Could that be the play
where Smoltz got hurt? I read he dislocated his pinkie on his pitching hand.

by cesarhernandez on May 14, 2007 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yup
He really looked like a baby throwing a fit.  And then he tried to blame it on Kearns, who was genuinely concerned.

Smoltz is a jerk.

I went back and looked at some early predictions and found this:

By Caleb
Posted on Mon Apr 09, 2007 at 07:21:44 PM EDT
[Edit Diary]
Going into tonight's game Griffey and Jackson are tied for tenth all time in Home Runs with 563. I'm hoping that Griffey will break the tie tonight and would love to see it happen on this road trip. Here are my Griffey Hr predictions:

Season - 39
#1  (564) April 10 @ Arizona - passes Jackson
#7  (570) May 24 vs Washington - passes Palmeiro
#11 (574) June 2 @ Colorado - passes Killebrew
#21 (584) July 16 @ Atl - passes McGwire
#24 (587) August 7 vs LA - passes F Robinson
#37 (600) September 12 vs St Louis - 600 career
#39 (602) September 26 vs Houston

No basis for anything here, certainly nothing Slydesque in the way of charts, formulas or graphs rather just my gut feeling. Hope springs eternal. Go Reds

by bphil2b on May 14, 2007 10:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That's why!
People get on Dunn's defense. It so looked like he could catch that if he wanted to.

For someone who is "surprisingly fast" it doesn't SEEM like he uses that speed when playing the outfield.

by snohio on May 14, 2007 10:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

fast is not as important
as being able to judge a ball.

by Caleb on May 14, 2007 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The one thing that has ALWAYS bugged me about Dunn is that it seems to me that he is a loaf in right field.

But I really don't think the team is that bad.  The starting pitching is good (Belisle's rough night notwithstanding).  The offense is okay.  It's the bullpen that's killing us.  And maybe some less than stellar defense.

I don't.
But sometimes a game against Greg Maddux can sure make it look like a team has.

Baseball is a very random sport and we can tend to attribute result to effort- be that positive or negative result- too often.

Right now the Reds aren't hitting well, aren't pitching well and are losing a lot. I attribute that a lot more to talent than I do effort, though.

by Reds123 on May 15, 2007 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that a game like this
where the pitcher just owns you, can make things look worse. Unfortunately, things looked bad before tonight's game even started. And now Chris and George are talking about how some guys in the clubhouse are surprised that everyone just goes home after the game as if nothing had happened. IMHO, that's a really, really bad sign.

Interesting
But didn't we hear this Spring Training about how great the Reds' clubhouse chemistry was?

I've always felt like baseball players are just like fans as far as how they react to winning and losing over a 162-game season. Some get caught up in every moment and others simply aren't interested in getting that emotional about the result of something you'll do 162 times.

I don't really assign a "good" or "bad" too either. But I can see how it could result is a fractured clubhouse when things are going bad.

by Reds123 on May 15, 2007 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't recall hearing that about
the clubhouse in ST, but that doesn't mean it isn't true - I wasn't playing close attention this spring.

Things have got to be "fractured" in that clubhouse. Good word for it.

In a way
it makes sense that the players don't give a fuck because it's obvious that they're playing for a manager and a GM who don't act like they have a coherent plan or vision for the team. Between Narron's line-up bingo and Wayne's mistrust of team youth, what is there for the players to buy into. Where's the logic in bull-headedly staying with a washed up journeyman like Stanton, but benching or demoting EdE despite his tremendous promise?

The players play, but management sets the tone. And from my (admittedly distant) vantage the tone is "we don't know what the fuck we're doing."

Dunn is fun, but Griffey's spiffy.

happen for Narron to get the boot to happen. The other part of me wants to see this team win, no matter what. I'm seriously torn. As I said above, I've already spent money on this team for 2007, and dammit if I'm going to sit by and watch this crap as it unfolds.

Stanton pitches a perfect 8th.
Too bad we're down 7 runs.

It's these kind of nights.
That the bullpen pitches decent.

sigh
Cheez Whiz, I'm seeing enough of this from the Yankees. When they pitch well, they don't hit, when they hit well, the pitching blows.

David Wells tomorrow. We can beat him, right?

Haven't heard anything from Daedalus recently. Is she alright?

Like many, she's unhappy with the way things are going for the Reds.

Gotta love
When we dont need the bullpen to pitch well at all they go out and slam the door shut UGHHHHH. Narron sucks at managing this bullpen im surprised he didnt run coffey out there tonight.

Honestly...
These guys suck! Fire Narron, blow up the team, whatever. Something needs to be done.

Reds optioned out Keppinger
and... uh... oh, yeah, Livingston to AAA, brought up McBeth and, wait for it... Chad Moeller.

Yippie.

McBeth
something wicked this way comes.

at least
we have some new quotes to look forward to

by Caleb on May 15, 2007 7:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

interesting
Moeller's been hitting pretty well in Louisville.  And maybe they think he can help the bullpen?  He's supposed to be one of those catchers the pitchers love.

And might as well give McBeth a try.  Maybe he'll be our closer.

Seems a little strange that they'd send down Keppinger before they can call up EE.  Most clubs don't like to be short of infielders.

by BubbaFan on May 15, 2007 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Closer
The sad thing is that to have a closer would require save situations.

I'm beginning to think we really might have seen the last of Edwin in a Reds uni... Or maybe we just really need that third catcher as opposed to an infielder. I have no idea what's going on anymore.

by Ash on May 15, 2007 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think EE will be back
They can't call him up yet.  They just sent him down.

That said, EE isn't playing all that well in Louisville.  Three errors in four games, hitting .235.

I wonder if they might call Bellhorn up.  He has played well for the Bats.  Of course, if they call him up, they'll have to keep him up, or risk losing him.

I dunno...
I think his job is safe.  Krivsky seemed astounded that the question was even asked.

Plus, firing the manager now would be basically giving up on the season.

Then there's the Josh Hamilton thing.  They hired Narron's brother, just to support Hamilton.  And yeah, I think he still needs the support.  There's a high relapse rate with cocaine addiction.  (See Strawberry, Darryl or Gooden, Dwight.)

Krivsky seemed astounded
I just don't buy the truthfulness of that response from him anymore. He said today that he went with the team because they're 2-8. That he wouldn't be going with them if they were 8-2. But don't read anything into that. What? You're doing something that you wouldn't do under different circumstances, but don't read anything into that? Logic, much?

He seemed "shocked" the other day that there were questions about EdE being shopped, but you know he has asked around. I don't mind him asking questions and pursuing inquiries; that's his job. But don't act like firing the manager or trading players has never occured to you when the team is 11 games out of first on May 14th.

Dunn is fun, but Griffey's spiffy.

firing the manager = giving up on season?
Firing the manager seemed to work well for Florida in 2003.

I hope Narron is gone
Why even keep him around? Not like hes helping the team any. I think they should just no even have a manager and ask who wants to play. Cant be much worse.

f
So Narron gets fired they hire Dent and then sign him for 4 years while never winning. When a new manager comes in it needs to be a guy that has no connection to the club at the moment. I dont care who the hell it is but it better not be a bench coach or a minor league manager.

by Muggerd on May 15, 2007 12:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree
bring someone in from the outside, if you decide to change managers.

And please God not someone from the Twins, if only because we'll know that Krivsky has no creativity or imagination and is just going back to the same well.

Leo Durocher couldn't win with this team.

Leo didn't win with many teams...
I don't ever remember him winning a pennant , or division, since I've been following baseball. But I did really enjoy his 1969 season. At least the end of it.

Krivsky
Has only beeon the job for 2 years and only 1 off season. Im willing to give Wayne a little more time. I never see this team winning with Narron.

postgame update from Trent
Postgame: Talked to Krivsky after everyone cleared out of the clubhouse.

"There won't be any panic, either," Krivsky said. "We've played how many games? 39?"

"We're using all our people, scouts, player development people, everyone has input on every decision I make," Krivsky said. "The people who have knowledge of the players are going to have input. Terry Reynolds, Ted Power, Rick Sweet, Mack Jenkins all had input on Marcus McBeth, and the guys had input on what catcher to call up."

"We're utilizing our people, that's how we're going to make good decisions, using our people. We're doing everything we can to win games."

Krivsky reiterated that firing Jerry Narron was "not on my radar"

He does know that's almost a quarter of the season
right?  Hence, me not buying anyone using the excuse "It's still early."  To overcome the hole we're in would take some kind of heroic effort from the entire team, and frankly I just don't see it happening.  Cash in your chips for 2007, get over your veteran bullpen fetish and get whatever parts you can for the jokers you've got in there now.  Bring up the young kids, especially EdE (but I would still leave Bailey down until at least the All-Star Break and maybe September).

1)Develop a plan
2)Stick with it
3)Realize that Narron, under optimal conditions, will hand you a .500 club
4)Find someone who will bring you over .500 in 2008.  That's the year to contend.

by Brendanukkah on May 15, 2007 8:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep
No way Narron ever gets players to win when they shouldnt. For every loss on the season i could pick out a move i didnt agree with. What kind of manager does that show if all your fans notice how bad he is. What do you think the players think?

by Muggerd on May 15, 2007 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fire
Both Wayne and Jerry.  I can't take it anymore, they are now going to have 3 catchers again?  I mean that worked so well last year and of course there is no other part of the team that needs help right now.
Please contribute to the Hats for Bats fund.
