Game Recap
http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/gamecenter/recap/MLB_20070514_ATL@WAS
Kearns was trying to avoid Smoltz. Smoltz tagged him and immediately started jumping around and threw his glove down on the ground. Then Smoltz was seen flailing his forearm out as if bitch about what Kearns did. But the replay clearly shows Kearns really just giving up on the play. In fact, as soon as Smoltz started screaming, Kearns froze as if he didn't know what happened.
Could that be the play

[Edit Diary]
Going into tonight's game Griffey and Jackson are tied for tenth all time in Home Runs with 563. I'm hoping that Griffey will break the tie tonight and would love to see it happen on this road trip. Here are my Griffey Hr predictions:
Season - 39
#1 (564) April 10 @ Arizona - passes Jackson
#7 (570) May 24 vs Washington - passes Palmeiro
#11 (574) June 2 @ Colorado - passes Killebrew
#21 (584) July 16 @ Atl - passes McGwire
#24 (587) August 7 vs LA - passes F Robinson
#37 (600) September 12 vs St Louis - 600 career
#39 (602) September 26 vs Houston
No basis for anything here, certainly nothing Slydesque in the way of charts, formulas or graphs rather just my gut feeling. Hope springs eternal. Go Reds

When does this team get to leave "baseball Hell"?
That's why!
For someone who is "surprisingly fast" it doesn't SEEM like he uses that speed when playing the outfield.
True but.,.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named "Bubba"?
Ouch
But I really don't think the team is that bad. The starting pitching is good (Belisle's rough night notwithstanding). The offense is okay. It's the bullpen that's killing us. And maybe some less than stellar defense.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named "Bubba"?
Eh. Hyperbole.
I know this will pass, but for now, it just hurts.

Okay
The only way the Reds aren't getting no-hit tonight is if Maddux gets hurt.
The Dodgers?

Apparently guys are telling them that they just lose, go home and come back the next day. Doesn't really bother them. Or something. WHAT!? Seriously?
Ugh.
do you think...
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named "Bubba"?
Seems like it...
I don't.
Baseball is a very random sport and we can tend to attribute result to effort- be that positive or negative result- too often.
Right now the Reds aren't hitting well, aren't pitching well and are losing a lot. I attribute that a lot more to talent than I do effort, though.

I agree that a game like this
Interesting
I've always felt like baseball players are just like fans as far as how they react to winning and losing over a 162-game season. Some get caught up in every moment and others simply aren't interested in getting that emotional about the result of something you'll do 162 times.
I don't really assign a "good" or "bad" too either. But I can see how it could result is a fractured clubhouse when things are going bad.

I don't recall hearing that about
Things have got to be "fractured" in that clubhouse. Good word for it.
Was there anything...

i like Chris' inside information right there
In a way
The players play, but management sets the tone. And from my (admittedly distant) vantage the tone is "we don't know what the fuck we're doing."

It's these kind of nights.
That the bullpen pitches decent.

interesting
And might as well give McBeth a try. Maybe he'll be our closer.
Seems a little strange that they'd send down Keppinger before they can call up EE. Most clubs don't like to be short of infielders.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named "Bubba"?
Closer
I'm beginning to think we really might have seen the last of Edwin in a Reds uni... Or maybe we just really need that third catcher as opposed to an infielder. I have no idea what's going on anymore.
I think EE will be back
That said, EE isn't playing all that well in Louisville. Three errors in four games, hitting .235.
I wonder if they might call Bellhorn up. He has played well for the Bats. Of course, if they call him up, they'll have to keep him up, or risk losing him.

by Man Mountain on May 15, 2007 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions
I dunno...
Plus, firing the manager now would be basically giving up on the season.
Then there's the Josh Hamilton thing. They hired Narron's brother, just to support Hamilton. And yeah, I think he still needs the support. There's a high relapse rate with cocaine addiction. (See Strawberry, Darryl or Gooden, Dwight.)
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named "Bubba"?
Krivsky seemed astounded
He seemed "shocked" the other day that there were questions about EdE being shopped, but you know he has asked around. I don't mind him asking questions and pursuing inquiries; that's his job. But don't act like firing the manager or trading players has never occured to you when the team is 11 games out of first on May 14th.

postgame update from Trent
Postgame: Talked to Krivsky after everyone cleared out of the clubhouse."There won't be any panic, either," Krivsky said. "We've played how many games? 39?"
"We're using all our people, scouts, player development people, everyone has input on every decision I make," Krivsky said. "The people who have knowledge of the players are going to have input. Terry Reynolds, Ted Power, Rick Sweet, Mack Jenkins all had input on Marcus McBeth, and the guys had input on what catcher to call up."
"We're utilizing our people, that's how we're going to make good decisions, using our people. We're doing everything we can to win games."
Krivsky reiterated that firing Jerry Narron was "not on my radar"
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named "Bubba"?
He does know that's almost a quarter of the season
1)Develop a plan
2)Stick with it
3)Realize that Narron, under optimal conditions, will hand you a .500 club
4)Find someone who will bring you over .500 in 2008. That's the year to contend.
