BREAKING - Encarnacion Optioned

C. Trent reporting that Edwin Encarnacion has been optioned to AAA Louisville, and the Reds have called up 2B/3B Jeff Keppinger. Kinda shocked, but not really.  The Reds have to try something.  Get Edwin on track, and he will be back.  It really reminds me of the Austin Kearns situation a couple years back.

Update [2007-5-10 10:45:54 by MixFMKyle]: Lineup:

Freel 3B

Hatteberg 1B

Griffey RF

Phillips 2B

Dunn LF

Hamilton CF

Castro SS

Narron Hates Edwin...
Fire the buffoon and get a real manager in there, and Edwin will be fine.

This is a good thing
because if Narron hates EdE then Eddie's screwed at the majors. This way he can get regain confidence and who knows maybe he'll get a look-see at 1st base. But if Jerry really doesn't want him around you can bet that he's pushing to get rid of him permanantly for a reliever.

Brandon Phillips made a comment on the news about there being 'trouble' in the clubhouse. Lots of testosterone and ego in there...Narron is letting the whole thing turn to shit. I wouldn't say he's buffoon. He's just in way, way. way over his head.

Clever that Narron fellow

Tired of this
Is anyone else tired of the way this team is treating EE? The guy is just starting to hit the ball well and he gets sent down for a bad defensive night. Hes the only right handed power threat the team has. Unless you count Sea Bass and Ko9, and I dont.

by CamIam on May 10, 2007 10:40 AM EDT reply actions

Not seeing the forest for the trees
Sure, Edwin blew last night's game.  But it wasn't third base that blew all those other games.

It really surprises me how they treat Edwin here.  If he doesn't play perfectly in the field, they bench him immediately.  It just seems like the exact wrong way to treat him, especially if they want to buy into the notion that they're a small-market team and need to develop their own stars to be competitive.  You've got a great prospect in Edwin, but you aren't developing him at all.  Sheesh.

Well, Keppinger and Hopper on the bench are okay, but so long to the days when the Reds would get a home run to win the game.

Amen brother. I concur. (Unless Narron is dealing with something that we don't know about.  See: Josh Hancock.  Not at all saying that there might be addiction/abuse issues here. Just that this could be justifiable "tough love" for EE.)

Krivsky Mind
Keppinger = "plays the game the right way!, Not all that good and will never get better."

Encarnacion = "young and talented, needs coaching to reach his potential."

It was a no brainer.  It is amazing Coffey is still on the team.

Krivsky's dream team would be 25 guys who are between 33 and 45 years old, who used to be above average but are now just hanging on to the tail end of their careers.  This type of team eliminates any need for coaching or development and makes for great bull sessions in the clubhouse as the team loses three games out of every five.

don't overreact
I think their main concern is that EE gets his confidence back and gets his head on straight.  His approach to hitting and, in general, don't seem to be as up-to-par as last year, like maybe he just assumed he already had it made.  It is somewhat of a surprise and it certainly doesn't help our bullpen but maybe it will do wonders for EE.  I mean, if he stays there 2 weeks, starts to hit again, and comes back up with more confidence, then hopefully he can resume the form we saw last year.

Remember, we're not in the dugout.  We don't see his attitude every day...........whether he is discouraged or surly or what.  Let's wait and see what happens.

by nighthawk32 on May 10, 2007 11:32 AM EDT reply actions

A guarantee
Edwin Encarnacion will never again wear a Reds uniform. You can take it to the bank.

by Watubi on May 10, 2007 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

possibly, but
I don't see how sending someone to the minors helps their confidence.  In fact, look at how EdE has been treated since day one under Narron.  Every time he makes a mistake he sits the bench.  That seems very conter-productive to building confidence.

Maybe EdE has an attitude problem that we don't know about, but it would be strange to hear given that EVERYBODY said that he was working so hard to improve his game last year.  Now, all of the sudden, he's a malcontent.

I agree completely.
He's seemingly been hitting the ball better lately, although not all of his strokes have been falling in for hits.

Narron sitting him 3 times in a week is a joke.

Sending someone to the minors helps their confidence how?

I first heard this driving this afternoon.  Caught the game in about the 4th inning and almost drove off the road.  WTFWTFWTFWTFWTF.  I didn't realize offense or 3rd base defense is a glaring weakness.  Krivsky again makes the starting lineup (and bench) weaker by removing an everyday player from the 25-man roster and replacing him with a AAAA player.  At least this time, the everyday player is still in the organization (for now.)

Wayne says he was shocked...
From C Trents blog:

Wayne said Eddie was initially shocked, but left knowing that it was a chance for him to get better. Wayne also said, "he's still a big part of our future."

Freel will get much of the playing time at third, with Keppinger playing second and third as well.

Edwin wasn't in the clubhouse. Keppinger was. He said he was called last night and was ready to be here today. They'd been on a 10-day roadtrip, so his bags were already packed. He's wearing No. 27, which is better than the 74 he wore in spring training.

Stupidity
10th in the majors in runs scored, and still outscoring our opponents by 5 runs. Yep, this team is a disaster! Remember the 2005 Nationals, who in the first half had like a 15-2 record in 1 run games? Well, in the second half, that record reversed itself. I'm guessing the same thing will happen to the Reds this year. This is an extreme overreaction that illustrates why Krivsky is such a terrible in-season GM.

In 2006 and 2007, how many Reds have 2 errors in a game and did they miss the next game (or get sent to AAA?

How does going to AAA boost confidence?
Let's say he play 10 days down there, makes 0 errors, bats 1.000 with 15 homeruns, and gets recalled.  How does all that success help his confidence when he knows that he's one error or 0-4 day from sitting on the bench...or perhaps 2 errors from going back to Louisville?

Trade option
Reds send Edwin Encarnacion, Matt Belisle and Paul Janish to Kansas City

Kansas City sends Mark Teahen and either Emil Brown or Reggie Sanders to Cincinnati.

Cincinnati gets a very good young third baseman and a short term filler in the outfielder/pinch hitter role to give them a bit of desperately needed offense.  The Royals gets a long term solution at shortstop, a decent young arm and a young talented hitter trying to find a defensive position where he can stick.  Royals could convert Encarnacion to 2B or RF.

Just thinking with my keyboard.  I expect Krivsky will give away Encarnacion for much less in return before this thing plays out.  Maybe he'll trade him for Jose Mesa and a gritty AAAA infielder?  Don't laugh, you know it is possible.

Desperately needed offense? from the outfield? i think with dunn, griffey and hamilton in the outfield (our three best bats) the last thing we want to do is give away two promising young players for emil brown or reggie sanders. this deal would be the exact opposite of what we want to do.

I would not like this trade...
..but I'll just add that Reggie might be good for platooning with Hamilton and/or covering Junior during any of his ailments.  And then Freel could be traded for some legitimate young bullpen help. (Building for the future, mind you.)

I don't know about Teahan's contract. (I don't even know if he bats L or R.  I just know he's pretty good.) And I don't know how interested KC would be in the Reds' whipping boy right now but I like the idea of moving Belisle while he has maximum value.

But ultimately I wanna keep EE.

Here comes the 'Lets make a deal' portion of
our show! We only need to get a reliever who can come into the game in the 7th or 8th inning and get 3 outs with professional cosistancy. We could use a closer too while we're at it (although I've not totally given up on the DL guys). Today Freel, Dunn and Ross (God's whipping boys) did real good. Granted Juan and Conine are not the power guys you'd want off the bench but then neither is Reggie a bench player/pinch hit specialist.
