Burton to DL

According to Trent.  So we get to keep Coutlangus and Santos for a couple more weeks, anyway.

It really feels wrong that these pitchers who have thus far earned their spots on the roster have to worry about a guy who doesn't deserve a spot taking theirs.

Think this is a phantom injury?

Honestly
That was my first reaction. Wouldn't be the first time a team hid a guy like Burton for a few weeks to see how things shake out.

it has to be a phantom injury
this is too much of a coincidence for it to not be.

Shrewd
Does this mean Burton will get to rehab in the minors as well? I'm not sure about the exact rules on rehab assignments and if they apply to Rule Fivers.

Also, while I've been pleasantly surprised with Santos, the guy is in his age-30 season and he's never been any good. I think it's worth rolling the dice on Burton to harness his stuff even if it means sacrificing a known mediocrity like Santos.

there's a limit
He has to be active for at least 90 games.  Any less, and he has to make it up next season.

I would imagine his original team might raise heck if they thought it was a phantom injury, too.

Rehab
He can do 20-days in rehab, if I recall.  The Reds pulled that with Wily Mo when he hurt himself walking down the stairs in 2004 (I think).

that gives us an extra month
to figure out how to get rid of cormier and moeller.  bray is about due to come off the DL, but i imagine he'll be a bat for awhile.

so what if he's 30
if he's getting the job done, keep him.  when he starts pitching like milton, then we can send him down.

As many teams
as seem desperate for bullpen help, the Reds could really help themselves by turning around a guy like Santos in a trade eventually. Of course that would mean giving him enough innings in the bigs and PRAYING he doesn't reduce to his career mean.

It's time the Reds started selling high on players like Santos.

Hear hear
With all the warm bodies in the 'pen this year, it would be silly of Krivsky not to move one of them. And despite what I said above, I certainly hope that Frenchy is the first to go. Saarloos seems like another guy who could bring in a good haul from a team like Boston or New York.

jerry hearts saarloos
and i don't want to see him go, either.

Burton
at least he gets to gain big league time for his pension and draw big league pay while he is out. But I am quite sure it is a phantom injury
