Who would you rather listen to call a Reds game?

The Reds have played 4 weeks of baseball, and by now many of us have had a chance to hear all the new Reds commentators and combinations of commentators.

We have no clue from one game to the next, or at least one series to the next, who will be calling which games.  Assuming you had a choice to listen to any of the combinations heard so far, other than Marty & Joe, who would you listen to on a nightly basis if given the choice?  Would you bring Steve Stewart back??

I would rather
have tHom and the Cowboy by default. I still find the sunshine enema and the mustachioed plumb smuggler insufferable, and Marty's outright hostility to saberspeak has soured me on him of late. So it's Big H and warblemouth because they do  have decent chemistry, and Brantley isn't as bad as I thought he would be. In the right pairing, tHom isn't bad either.

Marty & Joe
You know, by the time he called it quits, I was sorta down on Joe. I felt like his quality was slipping quite a bit and it was probably time for him to go.

But, having him on a few of the broadcasts has reminded me that he's the perfect antidote to Marty. Marty is acerbic and kind of an asshole, and Joe balances that perfectly. He has personality, but it's a little more subdued.

The problem now is that they have too many "tell it like it is" guys. I mean, I want to be told "how it is", but I want a break from it every so often. I know the Reds suck pretty bad from time to time, but I don't necessarily want to hear that every single inning.

We had Steve Stewart, who was almost an antidote to Marty, but unlike Joe, he completely lacked personality. Which just made him boring.

Seconded
Marty & Joe all the way.

I would have to say Marty and Jeff
Though the awkward silences and minefield stepping that accompany a tHom and Chris performance is pretty good. Chris is getting better at standing up to tHom when he says cracked out stuff.

Easy Call...
Marty and Joe.  That's always going to be my answer.

But if I don't get to use Joe, then I'll go with Marty and Thom.

Marty & Joe
Agreed.  That would be my answer, and I figured a survey with them would be almost everyone's answer.

I've read a variety of complaints about the rest of the options in the poll, so I thought it would be interesting to see who everyone liked listening to.  Also curious if anyone longed for Steve to come back to the booth.

The answers may change over time, especially if Thom mellows or Brantley improves his PBP.

It depends
Is Brantley doing play-by-play?  If so, then I'd go with George and Chris.  If not, then I'd go with Marty and Jeff.

Good caveat
I agree.  I like Marty and Jeff combo with Marty doing play by play and Jeff playing the butt to Marty's insults.

by TheC on Apr 30, 2007 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brantley has the play-by-play
Yes, just as you hear them today.  With Marty + 2nd person, the 2nd person always does 4 innings of play-by-play.

I expect Brantley will get better as the year goes on.  I wasn't a big Steve Stewart fan at first, but he got better as time went on.

Is Steve damaged for life?
Stewart was eaten alive and left for dead at the side of the road by Marty - who then 'bemoaned' how hard Steve worked. He wasn't going to make it anyway but Marty made certain of that.

For a while I was the only one who had voted Steve
I think Steve got a raw deal. Personally I don't need my announcers to make the game entertaining for me. It will do on its own. That said, Steve's 'boring' label got applied quickly while he was finding his groove and stuck unfairly. Marty had no use for Steve's best qualities and completely shut him down. Also I'm afraid his measured, reasonable personality didn't play as well around here as a straight-talking cowboy does. Take a hike, college boy!

Marty & Chris Welsh.

I agree.
Why don't they give Chris a shot on the radio doing color commentary?  Because he's never done play-by-play?  He'd have to be at least as good (if not better) than Brantley.

Chris is good but he ain't the man
5 reasons wht Chris and Marty won't work
  1. Chris is too nice of a human being
  2. Chris gets pulled into Thom's negativity rather easily
  3. Thom's not as intelligently negative as his dad so you can imagine how quickly he'd be pulled into Marty's downer trip
  4. Chris is too fair to last very long with Marty
  5. Chris is just too nice of a human being

marty and jeff
although most here arent fans of brantley, i like him for some reason. i think it's just his voice. it's cool. he's awful at play-by-play, but he sounds like that uncle who's really good at telling stories.
What you gonna do with all that junk, all that junk in Junior's trunk?

Joe, Part II
We need some old sonofabitch that played way back when that can spin yarns about seeing frank robinson  get called up, stuff like that. I love listening to old guys talk about baseball.

Joe: Old Guy Talks about Baseball
I appreciate the offer, Bob. I have enjoyed eating at your breakfast restaurants when I get a chance to eat out on the road. I don't often get a chance to eat on the road, except maybe once a week; so it may be that you've changed a few things up there. I can't say. Sometimes a cahnge can help a team stay consistent and within themsleves. But a manager has to be concerned about consistency at all times.

Frank Robinson is a friend of mine and was a great competitor. That's one thing I will always say about him. He knew how and when to compete during a game. Our careers overlapped some, so I never got to see him play that much. I don't know when it was he got called up, I don;t have the numbers in front of me. I expect that he was called up at some point and competed immediately. But I also expect he struggled a little. Even the greatest players will go through periods when they struggle. I would not worry about it to much. He will continue to hit.

Joe's the real Hall of Famer
I couldn't agree more. Joe reminds me of playing ball when I was kid. He has such great presence even though he rarely gets a sentence out coherently. Without his knowledge of the game, his passion for the player's point of view and his fearlessness to get really emotionally involved (sometimes overiding Marty) Marty would have most likely not made the Hall. I love Nuxy and it could be that Brantley in time may develop that same kind of original persona.

Steve Stewart
I really liked Steve Stewart for a number of reasons, he seemed accessible to the fans and very fan-oriented.  However, I'd take the Cowboy, Thom, and Nuxy over Steve any day.  I'd like to see Steve more on the FSN side, though.

Brantley
I am really liking him. I think you need that type of guy in the booth. And he is an unashamed "homer" up there. I like that. He's corny but are you going to tell me Joe wasn't/isn't?

Give me the Bad Boy on the TV sometimes.

But more importantly give me all 162 Reds games both on radio and TV!!!

Jeff's the man
10 reaons I like Jeff Brantly:
 1. He's actually played the game, Marty
 2. He's Positive
 3. He's not in awe of Marty
 4. He has FUN
 5. He's positive
 6. He's a regular guy
 7. Although he's a'homer' he still tells it like he sees it.
 8. He compliments the other team's achievements
 9. He's Positive
10.His fun, positive, experienced commentary balances Marty's curmudgon(?)-like senility and overt player favoritism, not to mention Marty's greatly reduced passion and his negativity.

are you Tracy Jones, lol

by Caleb on Apr 30, 2007 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tracy Jones
I was at a game, back in the day, at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and saw Tracy lead off the game with a first pitch dinger over the left field wall. He also has passion...but I'm not him.
The boy wasn't too shabby of a fielder either.

I don't dislike Marty, I'm just bored with his predictable commentary and constant crabbiness.
that's all.

I liked Tracer
as a player. Injuries really hurt him. Not a big fan of his post game show I must say

Tracy Jones is sucn a condescending asshole
I was listening to him after the Reds beat Pittsburgh the first Friday of the season.  He was like Griffey isn't happy, you fans may not know that, but I am an ex player I see things you don't.

Plus he says he has never made a mistake, but he has changed on so many issues.

10 years ago when Ray Knight was in hot water, Jones talked about how he was a great manager, and after Knight was fired Jones said he was such a horrible manager.

I think he may have done the same with Bob Boone.

Plus the one caller who allways calls in with the son he refers to as "junior" is horrible.  That guy is embarrassed everytime.  Tracy Jones told him to make sure his son, "jr." loses weight.  I am embarrassed for him.

repression is not healthy
Please don't hold back. Let it out - Maybe you could hire Marty to eat Tracer for breakfast and leave his rotting carcas on the side of the road.

TJ
Jones has unfortunately let his schtick take over the content of his show, and he's turned a lot of people off.  All people want to do after a game is talk Reds, get Reds news, or after a bad game/couple of games complain and vent.

No one chose the Thom & Chris option (as of 52 votes.)  Dislike of the combo or just better options on the board?

George vs. Marty
I think in this survey Marty dominates just like a Marty & Joe option would have dominated.  He's been behind the mike for 33 years.
