Letter Designations for Relievers

Geki put up a nice post last night regarding the state of the Reds thus far, and it had a lot of good points in it, especially about Dunn.

He also made a proposal (which I think makes a lot of sense) that we now refer to the relief pitchers by letter instead of name, since they all stink so bad right now.  I think this is a wonderful idea.  Here is my stab at assigning letters:

Cormier - F (naturally) Update [2007-4-20 12:53:40 by Paul Householder]: (can also be "U", "H" or "R")
Weathers - E (what we say when he comes in)
Stanton - B (about right if you were to grade his performance thus far)
Coffey - P (what you do when you have too much coffey)
Coutlangus - X (of course)
Santos - O (a nice surprise thus far)
Saarloos - L (what seems to result when he comes in)
Bray - I (for incomplete)
McJeffsky - D (as in DL)

Feel free to chime in if you have other proposals or just want to rant and rave about the bullpen.

This is great!
Could we work in BOHICA anywhere (alternate for F?), or is it just single letters, no acronyms?

I only used single letters.
That was harder.  "P" was the key to making it work, because Coffey could have been very easily an "E" or an "L" also.
Don't mind me...just thinking positive and pitching to contact, that's all...

BOHICA
in lieu of bullpen would work

pretty good stuff..
We should use lower-case letters to truly denote their values.

Also, by applying your "e for Weathers logic" someone should be "u".  And then I suppose that whoever is twice as bad as "u" shold be "w".

Cormier...
Can be a "u" also.

Cormier
Could command the ultra-rare "F.U." designation, which Franklin laid claim to last season.

Coffey, this past week, has been a "MF" but not to the opposition.

Is it ignorance or apathy? Hey, I don't know and I don't care...

Cormier
Maybe we can call homeland security and get him deported back to Canada because every time he comes into pitch a bomb/blast folllows.

this is very knee jerk
prior to the last two nights, the only reliever with any consistency in suckitude has been coffey, who has been bad in half of his appearances.

I don't know what you've got against Coffey
by my count he's had 3 bad outings, two of which were this week.  I don't know where you are getting this bad in half of his appearances.

11 appearances for Coffey
April 4, came in down 1, left down 3
April 8, came in down 1, left down 2
April 16, came in down 1, left down 5
April 18, came in ahead 1, left at a tie
April 19, came in ahead 4, left down 1

So yeah, it's one fewer appearance than half.

Coffey
April 4, he came in with the bases loaded and one out.  First batter hit a ground ball through the infield which many said that EdE should have gotten to.  The next batter grounded into a double play.  I do not pin that one on Coffey.  Coming in and getting 2 ground balls is exactly what he was supposed to do.

He's only come into one game where the difference in score was more than 3 runs, and only once has he surrendered a lead.  He was terrible on the 16th and the 18th was just stupid because he shouldn't have pitched to Berkman.  But I don't think that 3 outings out of 11 make him a bad pitcher, especially when he was probably the most reliable pitcher in the bullpen last year.

The problem is that Coffey is not a great pitcher, he's just a good one.  In fact, that can be said about just about everyone in the bullpen.  Every one of these guys are going to get beat around from time to time.  And unfortunately, there isn't anybody waiting in the minor leagues that isn't the same type of pitcher.

Cormier
Has been remarkably consistent in his suckitude.

This is true.
The bullpen will be okay.  Okay.

What is most disheartening is that aside from Stanton none of these guys have ever been (or even expected to have been) rock solid.  So they're gonna take their lumps occasionally and they're gonna be just another inconsistent MLB bulpen.

It was fun for two weeks to think that we were gonna have some sort of ragtag A-Team of mercenaries who somehow scrapped and built things out of duct tape and got the job done but the truth is we've probably just got some fat re-treads.

But they're my absolute favorite fat re-treads and I love 'em.

I voted Coffey
Only because I don't think Cormier shouldn't be sent down.  I think he should just be booted entirely from the Reds organization.

S'okay...
Cormier is likely to "win" the "Lottery" anyway, even with boobs skewing the poll.

Cormier
and since they said tonight that Bray still hasn't thrown a pitch it will be awhile before we see the second move

by Caleb on Apr 20, 2007 8:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It'll be a while before we see the 1st.
Majewski's ERA over 9 in AAA isn't getting him called up any time soon, I would hope.
