Freel inks extension

Per C. Trent: Freel signed a two-year extension today, ensuring that he runs into outfield walls and talks to imaginary little people for the Reds through the 2009 season...

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Farney Freel... Farney Freel... Farney Freel... What's the deal with Farney Freel... 300 characters is for real... kick a rhyme seal the deal... Ryan Freel is off keel

I wouldn't have given him an extension...
He needs to learn to take a walk!  Did you see him yesterday?  The pitcher was wild, and Freel had a 2-0 count.  The pitcher then through two more balls, but they weren't balls because Freel hacked away at them.  It infuriates me!

I think Farney is leading Freel down the wrong path...He needs to stop listening to Farney and start listening to Thom!

I'm right, and you know it!

Yay for Freel! I like what he adds and don't see him backing off anytime soon. What was the deal worth?

good sign
he gives the roster a ton of flexibility.  Farney's ability to play 1b/3b/lf/cf/rf may be what enables the Reds to carry three catchers.

Kriv will keep him around long term for that facet alone.

Is it ignorance or apathy? Hey, I don't know and I don't care...

This signing...
Just takes him through his remaining arbitration years.  It makes sense for him to sign, and for the Reds to avoid the headache each offseason.

Freel is valuable... you can play him virtually anywhere and he won't hurt you defensively...

2 Yrs/ 7 Million
3 in 2008,  4 in 2009.

I was thinking 5.5-6.5 range.  I guess they avoid arbitration and they know what is on the books for him the next 2 years.

I like it
In addition to the reasons mentioned above, but (like the Arroyo, Harang and Dunn deals) it tells the players that the front office isn't going to nickel and dime you and fight you every year at arbitration; if you're willing to work with them, they'll get a deal done, and you can have some stability.

This thing goes a long way to making Cincinnati (like St. Louis) an organization that players want to play for. Which is a far cry from the Schott and Lindner years. I really think that we'll be more competitive in free agency in the next few seasons.

Freel's so scrappy...
...that he demanded the contract be rubbed with dirt before signing. ;)

from "Bucs Dugout"
-P- My favorite GM, Krazy Krivsky, is busy again. Ryan Freel is a nifty player to have around, but why bother signing a utility player in his 30s to a two-year extension that doesn't even begin until next year? This isn't a terrible move - in fact, it probably isn't among the ten worst moves Krivsky has made since becoming GM - but it mostly just seems like a manifestation of Krivsky's tendency to try to build teams around relievers and utility players.

Come on..
There is no negative to this signing...

All he did was buy out arbitration years.  It was going to have to happen anyway, so why not avoid the headache if you can?  It doesn't make Freel any less tradeable, and it's good for both the player and the team.

I agree with ya.
I just wanted to share what I found down in the division's basement.

I find it hard to take a Pirates fan seriously
when he says that OUR GM is crap.  Maybe he is, maybe he isn't, but I don't think there's a better case of the pot calling the kettle black.
