Serious Issue, seriously (the original beer related diary, settle for nothing less)

What, pray tell, do you see as the best beer to drink at a ballpark?

I think the Yuengling has a serious potential to go well with a dog or pirogi. Mmm, Yuengling. Maybe the best beer ever? Yes, much better than Southpaw, for sure. But perhaps a little too full bodied for the really hot weeks of the year.

Solution, I am beginning to fall in love all over again with Mich Light. They've reformulated back to the old "all malt" recipe along with the retro bottle. It's got that deep, rich taste again which would go down smooth but not be to heavy for those late July games under the sun. Nothing worse than sweating out a loaf of bread over the course of the last 5 innings.

So there you have it. In my perfect world, a park has a 1-2 punch of Yuengling for the cold months, and Mich LT. for the hot months.

You're close
to Slyde's neck of the woods here. He's a Captain and coke guy. You can always tell, they say. I wish the laptop had photoshop, I could prove it to you.

Yeah
I actually had a beer a restaurant the other day.  It tasted pretty good, but I'm not much for the taste of beer in general.  But the captain and coke can get me in some trouble.

I actually don't drink much either.  Ever since the breathalyzer broke on the utility belt, I just haven't been willing to risk it.

But it seems like they don't sell it at the GABP do they?

Mickey Lo?
What sorority were you in?

Honestly, this is an unoriginal answer, but Budweiser is the most consistently produced alcoholic beverage on the face of the earth. That's not my opinion; that's the aggregate opinion of a group of sommeliers and brewmasters that was published a few years ago. (Article in Restaurant Today) So, Bud is a safe bet and basically available at every park.

My local AAA team serves PBR and High Life (Yuengling too), both of which you can take deep into game and have enough of a hipster edge to make them cool. I usually try the local stuff at parks; nothing stands out beside the divine and now defunct Dixie Beer they used to serve at Zephyr games in NO.

I'd drink a Guinness at an October game if I knew what that was like. It's far and away less filling than any other stout porter with a much smoother finish.

Is Hudepohl still running around in Cinncinati? My dad never shuts up about that stuff. "Get Moody with Hudey!" Weidermann? I once bought 48 cans of that stuff for a tailgate in Baton Rouge for $10. Good times, then bad times.

and that is why we need Eddie Van Halen.

Bud, blech
There's the beer snob in me. But Micky is an Anheuser mass product too, no? Should be consistent, but not at all the parks, true. But we're talking what should be.

They just started making Huddy again, ask obc about it. I've never had it but want to try it. Maybe GABP catches the fever.

What's the deal with PBR becoming "in" again. Are they going to bring back Kroger Cost-Cutter beer too?

I read
an article in Atlantic or the New Yorker that ascribed the new ascendency of PBR to bicycle carriers. Apparently they're the ground zero of hipster culture in bigger cities because of their enviable mobility in traffic. A newly evolved creature.

Also it has the "Union Made" label placed prominently. The hipsters like the unions.

and that is why we need Eddie Van Halen.

It's not in these parts yet...
But Jimmy Buffett has a new beer coming out that I"m pretty excited about...

It's brewed by Anheiser, and called Land Shark Lager...

It's got a really cool bottle, and I guess I'll get to try it this summer at the concert!

Oh, well you know what, I found the card, actually, they're from your mom, so tell your gay mom I said thanks!

I bring my own to the ballpark
in a gallon sized ziplock bag filled with peanuts so it looks like I'm just bring the peanuts into the game.  I usually try to bring a baseball themed beer like Pyramid's Curveball or Brooklyn's Pennant Ale.  But that stuff isn't always easy to find, so then I go with Sam Adams or some sort of pilsner.

Only three bottles fit in the bag, though, and even that is tough, so if I want anything after that, I'll either buy Sam from the one place in RFK you can get it or I'll drink whatever nasty mainstream domestic "beer" the beer guy is selling.  I prefer Miller Lite over the others because it doesn't have that nasty impurity aftertaste that you kids are so fond of.  ;)

Still haven't found what I'm looking for.

Best drink at a ball park
buy a large coke and or pepsi drink half and replace the other half with Jack Daniels, cost effective and will keep you warm those early season games.

Depends....
In the summer I needs some lager style brew if I'm drinking quantity outdoors.  Ya can start with some top shelf beer in the early innings, but ya gotta dumb it down to some mass produced "light on the tummy" ale shortly thereafter.

Bud Select in the new aluminum bottles stays cold longer in the summertime. I'm a cold beer guy. Mich Lt works for me also, I sure hope they produce some aluminum bottles with the new retro style.

Corona is fabulous at a Buffett concert outdoors.  Cant commit to trying it at a ballpark, doesnt seem right.  Plus, the Bobkitten is boycotting this product since a certain Million March a while back.

Bobkitten votes for Rolling Rock.  It's an honest, hardworking ale....but it has that distinct taste that sticks in the roof of your mouth. Especially on a warm summer night.

The snob in me would argue that Stella Artois would do well at a ballpark, but I've never had one there.  And I really dont know how to pronounce the damn thing correctly.

Probably the best import, IMO, at a ballpark would be Labatt.  Tasted great in MI, and the night of Courtney.  I recommend it.

It's easy to pronounce...
When I order it, I just ask for a Stella...

It is an excellent beer though...

The problem with high-end beers
and microbeers is that they have an overdetermined and complex taste: great for "a" beer, but filling or taxing over a long haul of drinking. I like the Pyramid Curveball, but I wouldn't drink 48oz of it.

Sam Adams Boston Lager is pretty consistent. I'm less pleased with their seasonal junk.

and that is why we need Eddie Van Halen.

crystal obc method
I think he's right about the change-up. Heavy, then light. It provides for the taste buds, and lays a stable foundation for pounding. I think I'll try his style out this year.

Pyramid, that the unfiltered one?

Brickskeller
Have Daedalus or any of the other Washingtonians been to the Brickskeller? It's a fun scene and has a place in the Guiness book of records for having the most beer available.

I'm ashamed to say
That I've lived here for over a year and a half and have yet to go to the Brickskellar.  Daedalus, any chance that they show Reds games there?  (I caught a Reds/Dodgers game at that bar in Chinatown that's owned by the same people)

of course i've been there
there aren't many bars in NW DC that i haven't been to.

no, they don't show reds games there.

Still haven't found what I'm looking for.

by Daedalus on Mar 8, 2007 12:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

oh,
and they say they have all of those beers, but when you look at the menu, you always have to have two backup choices because they are out of things so often.  not that a real choice of 100 different beers on any given day instead of 600 is not having a choice...
Still haven't found what I'm looking for.

by Daedalus on Mar 8, 2007 12:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

that's what happened to me
We had to go third and fourth choices sometimes. We figured it was because the menu had been printed almost a year ago. It was also our waitress's first day so she was no help.

In fact, I asked the same question of Daedalus and Brendanukkah on another thread

http://www.redreporter.com/comments/2006/9/23/03444/4221/64#64

The Brickskeller is where I first experienced the finest beers known to man (Dogfish Head).  I am enjoying a Raison D'etre right now, in fact.  At last count, I owe a Dogfish Head to Daedalus, Ash (2), and Slyde.

Absolutely
90 Minute IPA is the greatest beer on earth.  No doubt in my mind.  I was an import guy until I had my first Dogfish Head.  That restored my faith in America.  Seriously.
