Gammons on BBTN

Anyone catch the first episode this season of Baseball Tonight? Peter Gammons picked the Reds to be his surprise team in the NL Central.  That made me think he really is recovered from  his brain surgery.

But then he said Jerry Narron is a great manager.  So, maybe Gammons' mind is in Spring Training shape.

I guess we should just be happy he knew that there were other teams in MLB besides the Yankees and Red Sox.

Yay!
Some recognition by one of the baseball guys that knows what he's talking about usually!  I'd like to see that.  Any chance at all it will be somewhere online?
Still haven't found what I'm looking for.

i saw it....
and gammons got really excited about jerry narron, basically attributing all of the reds "success" last year to him
"if you love the reds so much, why don't you marry them?"

I saw this too.
Was excited until Gammons called the manager "phenomenal" - that scared the hell out of me. He didn't just say great, he used the word phenomenal. My jaw hit the floor. Milwaukee got the Steve Phillips Team-to-Watch Kiss-of-Death. Not us, phew.

NL Central
I dunno. The Reds might surprise this year. I'm on record for 3rd place, mainly due to the below average offense and lack of a front end arm in the bullpen.

The Reds might catch a break if Hamilton develops and Junior stays healthy and produces circa pre-2006.

The pen could catch a break if Hermanson can close, and El Guapo returns after the AS break.

Love the possibility of Arroyo/Harang/Bailey, and whomever can man the 4/5 come August.

And I listen, to the voice inside my head...nothing, I'll do this one myself. "State of Love and Trust"

My problems w/ him include
His managing with his "heart."
The way he utilizes the bullpen.
His lack of playing time for Edwin, even with an already weakened offense.

I'm sure there's more I can't think of right now.

Managing pitching
Narron does not seem to have the touch when it comes to managing his starters and bullpen.  Milton, for example, was left him in too long several times last year (esp. later in the year).  I also don't like how he started Lizard the night after pitching in relief (8/12, in Philly).  He lasted only an inning and a third and clearly didn't have it.  He didn't pitch again in '06 for the Reds.

Could be worse
Of all the managers the Reds have had in my 38 years, Narron is not the worst. Think about it - Pete Rose was a horrific manager. Then look at the managers of the other major league teams - I would say that Narron is in the middle of the those guys. Sure, having a great manager is the dream, but there are very few out there currently. For now, at least, Narron gets the best out of his players. He manages the game the "right way", he's a gutsy veteran who likes his bullpen arms to be about his age.
Go Reds!

i wouldn't call a guy
who managed his team to 2nd place every year a bad manager (412-373 = .524).  Did he have that something extra to push them over?  No.  But that could have been because of his extracurricular activities...

I don't think anyone's saying this as as bad as it gets.  But he did cost several games last year with poor managerial choices.  Given that we only needed 4 games...

Still haven't found what I'm looking for.

i want manny acta
aside from having a manager who actually manages a game correctly (someone not tainted by wrongheaded traditions) -- and that guy doesn't exist -- i dont really care that much about managers. to me narron is not much worse than every other manager in baseball, and i just happen to dislike him because he manages my team.

i get in this argument monthly at work, when someone spouts off how great of a manager jim leyland is and how he is personally responsible for making the tigers good and getting them to the world series.

And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Actually
I will credit Narron for the fact that the players seem to like playing for him.  Miley wasn't able to achieve that.

I think Narron is a bad game strategist, but other than that he does a good job.  The problem is that game strategy is where we see results the most.

LaRue and Aurilia didn't like him
but that'll happen. And now they're gone.

Yeah
but the clubhouse never seemed out of control like it did with Miley, though that may be because they were winning.
