Personally, I think Ron Guidry has a better chance of starting Opening Day than Pavano, but maybe that's just me. Is Whitey Ford still alive?

Pavano is starting
I think the Yanks have decided that they might was well use him, because they'd be selling low if they traded him now.
And he worked really hard to get into shape during the off-season. For the first time in his career, apparently. He's trying to turn over a new leaf.
