Griffey to Atlanta

Because I'm bored at work and know that some people are not ESPN insiders I thought I'd post this tidbit from our friend Buster Olney:

"Heard a very interesting idea this week: The Reds could approach the Braves about a deal involving Ken Griffey Jr. -- Cincinnati could effectively hand Griffey to Atlanta, for a Grade B-plus prospect or two, while absorbing some of his salary. Junior could play right field for the Braves, with Jeff Francoeur moving to center fielder. This is something which Griffey might theoretically support, because he'd be only a short flight from his Orlando home, and it would help the Reds resolve their outfield glut."

I would jump on this deal in a minute. We could try to jump on a hard throwing prospect or 2 for the bullpen and eat a little salary. Also, Jr has said in the past he would accept a trade to Atlanta and he would be going to a contending team. This would allow us to get Bruce into the lineup from day 1 and solidify out outfield defense. An outfield with a healthy Dunn in left, Bruce in center, and Hamilton and his gun in right would be very solid.

if there is any truth to this
we all have more reason to be optimistic about this offseason.  unfortunately for us, the braves sold the farm this past deadline and the cupboards are pretty bare.  maybe they would give up yunel escobar in the deal, maybe not.  anyway, i like the sound of it.

Yunel Escobar
Is in the Braves' long term plans.

Why do they have long term plans?
They should always be playing for THIS year.  Now is the new future.

Escobar
Will probably be the starting shortstop for the Braves next season. They are going to try to trade Rentaria this offseason. I think he is going to be a very good player but thats not who I would want from the Braves. I would target hard throwing relievers or a back end of the rotation guy.

What about
Junior and Gonzalez to the Braves for Renteria and a Jo-Jo Reyes type?

if you trade griffey
you aren't going to get what you think you could get for him

which is to say, not very much.

by bobestes on Oct 8, 2007 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

I'm confused
So if I think they aren't going to get much for him, then they will get a lot?

Everyone, think negative!

Think Lucky
bitches.

I would settle for the salary dump and getting some good AA hard throwers.

That might seem like dissing Junior, but he only has about two years left in his career anyway.

Addition by subtraction: It opens up an outfield spot for Jay Bruce, our newfound hero.

Atlanta
the only way I trade Jr for one, or two, grade B prospects is if the Braves take on 100% of his salary. There is no way I would pay Griffey to play for someone else.

that one's a no-brainer
the reds will DEFINATELY eat some of jr's contract if he is traded.  that's just the way it works.  i would be happy if we pay half and get a few good prospects.  the open space for bruce is worth every penny.

This is a little off topic but..
I remember there being some talk about trading arroyo to the Braves at the deadline. Was this complete speculation or could this be brought up again in the offseason? I personally have a hard time seeing a situation where this could happen but i thought i would at least bring it up.

This is a trade rumor in the MLB
meaning there is a 120% chance it won't happen

Heard a very interesting idea this week
that's no rumor.

However, it could still happen.  Jo-Jo Reyes throws 94 mph from the left side and struck out a lot of guys this season without a lot of hype.  They've also got Joey Devine, who may benefit from a change of scenery.  I'd be happy with getting those two.  Gives us another option for the rotation, another option for the bullpen, and a space for Jay Bruce.

Jr. to Atlanta...hmmm - long shot
But I'd take just dumping his part of his slalary and hoping that Bruce comes near Jr.'s offensive output. Any prospects are an incremental bonus for an aging oft hurt super star, who BTW, WILL NOT have as good of year next year as he had in 07.
