After watching Monday's press conference, I just wanted to know how many of you caught the quote that was said to Dusty by Bob Castellini or Wayne Krivsky after they presented him with his jersey.
Granted Dusty was presented with a #08 jersey because of next season's calendar year however we all know that #8 is retired for Joe Morgan. Not too much thought went into this until this was said to him.
Dusty was told something to the effect "it was not his real number but they were working on it". Does this mean something may be in the works?
To my recollection, Dusty has worn #12 throughout his MLB career whether it be a player, coach, or manager therefore it's safe to assume that he will be wearing #12 in 2008. I don't think he would want to change now because it's apparent that the number means something to him. Who wears #12 now...EdE...and he has for the past three seasons.
Not saying that EdE couldn't change numbers but why would he want to? Does Dusty play the "Lou Piniella" thing and switch to #21 (remember he wore # 14 but switched to #41 because of Pete Rose)...I don't think so. For that matter, # 21 is Hatte's number anyway. EdE may even be more than happy to switch numbers but this is just another way that makes me think that EdE is done as a Red and this was just a little icing on the cake. Can see him packaged for some pitching this off-season.
Opening Day 2008, although it is a long time yet, I can see Keppinger at 3B, Dusty in the dugout wearing the #12, and EdE flashing his skills somewhere other than Cincinnati.
What are your opinions about it? The way EdE has been treated lately makes me think they are just looking for the right reason to get rid of him but I hope they look beyond their selfishness because I feel that he will be a very good baseball player in the years to come.
