You thought It couldn't get any worse for Dunn than August? Welcome to September
August was a robust .188 BA (and for you who won't look at anything but SLG and OBP... an equally horrific .284 OBP and .416 SLG) For good measure Dunners tossed in 39 Ks in 101 ABs for August. Not too shabby....
But stop the presses. It's September Baby. Reds making their final last ditch run for the playoffs. A check in on the Donkey?...
BA an unspeakable .145
OBP .337
SLG an impressive .264
Ok... so let's hear it?? It's a slump? yea.. right... But isn't he on the brink of his "peak years" ?? Isn't this the "franchise player"?
This is the most laughable fiasco is Cincinnati Reds baseball history. (oh yea and 36 Ks in 76 ABs for the month of September. 47% of his official ABs end in K)

exactly
Thanks for pointing this out.
Yup, Dunn's responsible
Thanks for the recap.
Damn
That's one of the many reasons I like Dunn. Because he knows how to take a walk he never goes through a completely dead slump. Even though he's having trouble hitting the ball well he's still getting on base a third of the time. That's pretty valuable.
And yeah, tonight is shitty timing. No offense Michael, but it's stuff like this that makes people question whether you're really that much of a fan of the Reds.
Even I think you're a jackass.

Haha!
I'll forgive him. If this is his real picture, I have a feeling I used to work with him. Or does he just look familiar to everyone?
I figured he was giving you homemade Boboli pizza. Getting the oven temp right for those things is a nightmare, just thought maybe that's why he's coming of as a pud at a time like this. Cooking frustration, that's all. Hang in there Mini!
Ha!
Hey everyone! Let's highjack this thread with Gilmore quotes. A no guilt highjacking.
You know what?
He's trying to take the thread
Michael: "Hate Dunn and stay out of my way, or you'll pay. Listen to what I say!"
How about I just go eat some hay.
Don't worry, I used the "nuh uh" defense on him. It's impenetrable.
That's okay, it's still fun anyway
Michael, you and Dunn have one thing in common.
I made this for you.
The magic of this animated .gif is that, if you sit back and watch it for a while, it says the same things over. and over. and over. ad nauseum. So, although a number of liberties have been taken (and greatly enjoyed), perhaps it sums up your schtick better than one might expect from a novelty such as this.
re:
I've been watching this guy very closely now for 4 years. He is stealing money. I'd counter that if you care about this franchise, if YOU are a fan than even if it is counter to what you might "wish", it is time for you to accept the reality of Dunn and his lack of quality production.
I didn't make those numbers up. Those are DUNN's numbers for the past 2 months.
And even after his July where he was so hot that he to some degree saved some of his cumulative season totals, even after that month.... his BA with RISP for season is back to .227 (horrid like it has been the previous 5 years). He leads all outfielders in errors for season. He leads majors in strikeouts. He is hitting sub-.235, slugging sub-.500, OBP sub-.370. And the little things? forget about the intangible/finer points of game.... They don't exist in Adam Dunn baseball.
He was prepared to take his team to arbitration last year to squeeze out all the $$$ he possibly could. He never played winter ball in his 6 years in the majors despite only playing one full year of high school baseball and having weaknesses in game which needed addressing. When Guillen was outplaying him 10:1 in 2003 and team was contending Dunn clung to his starting position eventhough the team suffered. In his tenure his everyday starts have effectively blocked the development of Jose Guillen, Willy Mo Pena, Ryan Freel, Austin Kearns, Chris Denorfia (just to name the most visible ones).
For those one or two short lived hot streaks each season he can be a force. His "norm" though is at best a wash. And when he is bad (a whole lot of the time) he is awful. And for this, a ~60-70 million payroll team will pay him 10+ million next year barring trade. Time to trade.
arbitration
winter ball
errors
He is third in the majors in walks which I think is a good thing. Yes he does lead the majors in k's and he needs to cut down on those, which to me is his biggest problem, and that is a bad thing.
I guess my question to you is what do you expect him to be? Dimaggio, Ruth, Mays all rolled into one? Because that is what it seems like you want. What would a "perfect" Adam Dunn be? And off my team in not an acceptable answer
last post (for now)
Dunn apologetics
Would you really take Guillen over him? That guy has been a club house cancer and run out of every town he has played in. And are his numbers any better than Dunn's? Wily Mo is the only outfielder I can think of who is worse than Dunn. Pena has to rank as the worst defender I have ever seen in 40 years of watching the Reds.
If Dunn is as bad as you say why in the world would any team trade for him? He should have no worth to anyone according to you. I still think that the guy is learning the game and has time to improve. Either bat him second or drop him to sixth or seventh in the order, move him to first base and try to develop him. I'm not sure how hard the guy works, or doesn't work, in the off season and I'm not sure how you know what he does, or doesn't do, to improve. AT what point do you write off players, when do you give up on a guy?
Dunn
re: winter leagues... arizona fall leagues...
If Dunn would have gone in trying to set a winter/arizona league record for homeruns to right field it would have done him nothing.
If Dunn would have recognized and owned that to be a better hitter he needed to improve his contact and alter his approach and that better fitness would help him as well he might have gotten a whole lot from winter/arizona league ball. He could have been begging for the reds to allow him to play winter ball to work on nothing but contact/opposite field hitting and defense. No doubt he didn't.
He also no doubt had an opportunity in 2003 when he was stinking from here to texas to go back to the minors to address issues....no doubt he didn't..
Dunn is all about the $$$, being a pro athlete and living the life..........
He has clearly never been about being the best possible baseball player he can be or about doing the finer things in the game which can help a TEAM win even if they appear in the short run to hurt your personal statistics........
I'm stupid.
This is one of my favorites
What, they wouldn't let you play cause you're black?
Hell no! Damn alligator bit my hand off!
Oh my GOD!
heh, I like that one too
I can see Adam Dunn saying that line, when he's at the golf course being an elitist and blowing off batting practice on his day off.
You know what else
Clearly...

ok
"Dunn is all about the $$$, being a pro athlete and living the life'
I have never gotten that impression from him.
SO is he the only guy on the team that falls short in doing the little things? That is a league wide problem. But why is he the lone object of your wrath? Griffey doesn't steal bases, move runners over, play in September but you don't drop the hammer on him. Why the hatred of Dunn?

more interested in himself than his team
eerga I
Your next challenge,
re:
He doesn't do any of the "little things" which are in fact about the "team" and not about his OPS for example:
-consciously hit behind runners? no...
-consciously cut swing to improve contact when game situation deems appropriate? no....
-play solid defense? no...
-be versatile defensively to give mgr more options? no...
-take walks to inflate personal OBP
-RUN/JOG out to his LF position to start innings to project positive image as member of team? no...
-make himself into a very good bunter so he can sacrafice himself if game situation deems appropriate? no....
-make himself into someone capable of exploiting the shift that is used on him so he can call on those skills when situationally appropriate? no......
-take it as personal challenge to cut strikeout totals and find a way to make it happen so as to be better at advancing teammates on the bases? no....
well there's a handful off the top of my head....
Y'know what else irks Michael?
Dunn drives a Chevy and not a Ford.
Dunn doesn't eat his vegetables at dinner.
Dunn is a remote hog.
Dunn drinks out of the milk carton.
Dunn likes The Godfather trilogy more than the Star Wars trilogy.
Dunn has friends and a shit-ton of money.
...that's what I can come up with off the top of my head...
You will miss this putt...

re:re
could possibly result in a lot of double plays
-consciously cut swing to improve contact when game situation deems appropriate? no....
Agreed he sucks at that
-play solid defense? no...
He could improve in that area. I would put him at first base
-be versatile defensively to give mgr more options? no...
Some guys are and have that ability. Not sure how you fault some one for that
-take walks to inflate personal OBP
That is a really, really silly statement. I guess none of the walks were taken to help extend an inning or get runners on for team mates. Come on, don't let your hatred get the best of you. If he swings and strikes out he is a bum. If he walks he is selfish. You can not have both sides of the argument.
-RUN/JOG out to his LF position to start innings to project positive image as member of team? no...
You and I are old school but very few people do that any more. I can't fault him for that.
-make himself into a very good bunter so he can sacrafice himself if game situation deems appropriate? no....
name a good bunter in the majors that has 40 home runs.
-make himself into someone capable of exploiting the shift that is used on him so he can call on those skills when situationally appropriate? no......
Ted Williams struggled with a shift also.
-take it as personal challenge to cut strikeout totals and find a way to make it happen so as to be better at advancing teammates on the bases? no....
agreed, some of his outs could be more productive.
It just seems like you want him to be the greatest player ever and he does not have the 5 tool ability to do that.
you ever just get that feeling?
So you are right...its no one thinng you can point out, he is just not the type of player I want on my team.
by ewquinn on Sep 28, 2006 1:57 PM EDT reply actions
So, essentially
And so you know where I'm coming from, I see a guy who plays 160 games a year, never blames his teammates for his struggles, never complains to the media, and tries to keep a good nature around the clubhouse. He's not going to be a leader, but you could definitely have worse teammates.
He is certainly productive
by ewquinn on Sep 28, 2006 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions
cool
But why, why, why doesn't that pitch selection reflect in fewer strikeouts?
This is the best explanation that I can think of: http://www.redreporter.com/comments/2005/8/5/35225/35534/11#11
it leaves him on first base allot, and I agree that he is a smart baserunner, but certainly not a fast one.
He has been #1 or #2 on the Reds for the last couple of seasons in terms of scoring from first base. Plus, he's led the Reds in runs going on 3 years now. He's doing something right.
I dont care if you hit 40 homers, if you can't/won't lay down a bunt, then I would prefer someone else.
He laid down a bunt once earlier this season and Narron criticized him saying that he's up there to hit the ball hard. Granted, the timing of his bunt was bad, but I don't think his manager wants him up there bunting all that much.
So Slyde, I think you are right, it IS a matter of preferance.
I appreciate that you say that. I don't have any problem with people disliking Dunn or criticizing him for that matter. As long as you acknowledge the good with the bad and vice versa.
I think his biggest asset to us is that someother Gm can pick him up and his local paper will say "Cunning GM wisely trades for 40HR man".
This is a good question. I don't like to hypothesize on a player's trade value because we rarely know what's actually available. But trading Dunn is creating a big hole in an already porous offense. I imagine the Reds can get some quality talent in return for him, but at this point, is it just a matter of shifting the balance sheet around and breaking even with where you are at. It'll be interesting to see what Krivsky does this off-season.
Oh.

RR has Michael tied up in a thread
Michael: `Good for them. Our uniforms too? That was clever. We'll never be able to convince anyone we're superior without our uniforms.'
Mini Michael: `Let's get their names, Tony, and--'
Michael: `Oh, Mini, relax,' said the slender man with practiced weariness. `You may be pretty good at moving armored divisions into action, but you're almost useless in a social situation. Sooner or later we'll get our uniforms back, and then we'll be their superiors again. Did they really throw our uniforms out? That was a splendid tactic.'
Narron on Winter Ball...
Somehow I don't think that has changed dramatically in 5 years. More than likely Dunn would have had the same opportunity - Dunn most likely just never wanted to play winter ball or fall ball.
Narron also commented on how winter ball is a great place to work on things with your game......hmmmm......Dunn must have thought he had nothing to work on with his game back in his first couple/few years?........or just didn't care...or too lazy or not interested....etc..etc... whatever the reason, very telling about where Dunn's head was then....
Excellent!
