The Dunn has "No Protection" MYTH
For those of you who buy into the "Dunn has no protection" myth or its because of the slot in the batting order that Dunn was horrid for 4 out of 6 months this year......
Have a look across the diamond at Lance Berkman. Berkman has had NOTHING hitting behind him all year but what did he do? He put up a .311 avg., 122 RBIs, 40+ homers etc..... he has almost as many walks as dunn in far fewer games. He was no doubt pitched around all year but HE (because he's a "good hitter") found a way........
with "good hitters" it matters very little "where" they hit in order - they just hit. They hit all kinds of pitches, frequently to all fields and from any slot in batting order.
Fragile, overrated, overpaid slumping big swing guys can be derailed by a "rain delay" and need a month to get back on track...........

Anyway, as we here in DC say, you go to the plate with the sluggers that you've got, not the sluggers you wish you had.

Sorry everyone...
I know it's not up to his usual standards, but he told me that if I didn't give him another idea for a post, he wouldn't share with me the buttermilk and sardines he was having for dinner tonight.
I was hungry. Forgive me.

seemingly, dunn accidentally uses a different shampoo for his sexy hair and it throws him into a month long slump.......

Damn right he's gro?!
Some people do enjoy Dunn's company; I saw a jersey mock-up which read "Dunn is my Hunn" on the back.
how many
but if this team
re:
however, if that was the plan (becoming slightly non-traditional 2 hole hitter) Dunn should have taken it upon himself to lose 20-30 pounds instead of gaining 20/30. If he had done that and worked just a little extra on bat control I'd have gone with you on that.......
Before I turned totally Anti-Homer K.
I told Homer K. that he should stop telling Adam to eat lots of pizza, drink lots of beer and watch reruns of "Charles in Charge" all the time, because that made him fat, slow and stupid.
He didn't take my advice, except that he did tell Adam to watch "The View" instead.

fat, drunk and stupid
...Animal House?
wormer dead!
Now we know the truth
In other words, you "turned" on a guy who by the end of the season:
- Was 23 years old;
- Had a batting line of .241/.379/.484 in a little over 2 full seasons;
- Had already established himself as the best hitter on the team (even in a year cut short by injury).
Very Nice...

re:
re: implication...
the point wasn't to scientifically refute that lineup protection can have any significance....
The point was to give an easy visible example of a player who has far less protection than Dunn but is still able to have a quality/productive year - dunn defenders love to use lack of protection as another excuse to defend lousy hitting by dunn over his career in cincy.
Guerrero didnt have much help in Anaheim this year, Berkman is extreme/great example. Guys who can hit it out of the park will always need to be considered situationally by the pitcher. Good hitters find a way though.
The problem is Dunn is not smart enough or capable of reciprocating the situational pitching with good situational hitting. Dunn just grips and rips.
I agree about Dunn!
He's NOT a clutch hitter - he's a poor base runner and a below average fielder.
He hits 40+ homers but he rarely carries the team - and I mean rarely!
Sad to say but truthful! We gave the Nationals the wrong outfielder! Out of the three young studs (Pena being the third) we are left holding the bag on Adam!
We now have a lousy offensive outfield when it used to be our biggest strength! This year the INF carried the team offensively (except for Clayton)!
Where would we be this season without RA, SH, Phillips, and EdE?

rarely carries this team
Berkman
As Lance Berkman is signed to (a) a much longer contract that (2) pays much, much more money in '06 and '07 and more in '08, wouldn't you expect much better production from him?
re:
noone is saying dunn is the equal of berkman. The point is good hitters don't need protection. Sure they benefit a little or may be hampered a little by surrounding players. But if you can hit, you hit.....
Berkman is an EXAMPLE of a hitter with nothing protecting him all year but he still finds a way to get his production......
The point?
"Fragile, overrated, overpaid slumping big swing guys can be derailed by a "rain delay" and need a month to get back on track...........
OVERRATED AND OVERPAID"
Let's go over your criticisms:
Fragile: This will be the 3rd year in a row Dunn has played in at least 160 games, and the 4th in 5 (he's only been in the league 5 full years) that he's played in at least 158. In each of those 4 seasons, he was among the top 18 in the league in plate appearances. So you don't know what you're talking about (as usual).
Overrated: He has been this team's best hitter in each of his first 4 full years, and nearly was in a year he played 116 games. This year, he had 2 great months and one above-average month. This year, Win Shares has him as clearly the best hitter on the team. So you don't know what you're talking about (as usual).
Overpaid: You've been asked this hundreds of times and never responded, but I'll ask again: Name a single corner OF who hits as well as Dunn, is arbitration/free agency eligible, and makes less money. Just name one. Again, you don't know what you're talking about.
Slumping: No one disputes this. Even good hitters go into slumps.
But you are the one who brought up Berkman. You know, the guy who, in 7 full years in the majors, has played in 160 games once. 3 years ago. He must be "fragile" and "overpaid" too.
re:
I already explained/clarified use of "fragile".
You're probably lazy like your here dunn who has openly admitting to reading two books his entire life. My guess is you didn't read this thread you just jumped in..........
typo
Plate in my head
So how is his hitting stroke "fragile"? Break it down for us. Give us a good analysis of where, or when, his stroke gets, or is, "fragile". Or just tell us what the hell a "fragile" swing is.
I'm "probably lazy". Why, because I actually do a little research, instead of just shooting off my mouth? Because I actually use proper grammer, spelling, and punctuation?
But that's OK. I missed your 5 word "clarification"; you still haven't explained why Dunn is overpaid or overrated. Who has contributed more on this team over the past 5 years? Who in the league would be a better bargain than Dunn?
Everyone here considers you an ill-informed jerk. Being ill-informed, well, that happens. But you make personal attacks against people who disagree with you, instead of trying to defend your asinine statements, which makes you a jerk. Nearly everyone else has chosen to just ignore you, because you are completely incapable of adding anything of value to this board.
Not me. I'm going to pick you apart, word by worthless word, until you admit that you don't know what the hell you're talking about. That you just pull stuff out of your ass to try (unsuccessfully, every single time) to "prove" your points. That, in a nutshell, you don't know the first thing about baseball or how the game is played.
Until you get a clue, or one of us is banned from this board, be prepared to read actual logical writing (even if you don't recognize what logic is) every time you post something here.

Besides, I'm not worked up in a bad way; I'm pumped. Someone's picked a fight with me I'm going to enjoy winning.
Adam Dunn
The thing about Dunn is that he's not someone you can build your lineup around. He's a guy who's going to OPS about .900, and that's damn valuable to have, but it's just a piece. The Reds need more pieces, not less.
