Around SBN: Terry Collins, David Wright, And The Mets/Brewers Kerfuffle

Game Thread: Game 110 vs. the Braves

TIME: 1:20 @ Great American Ball Park

BRAVES PROBABLE:
         REDS PROBABLE:
Jason Shiell (0-2, 6.39)       Bronson Arroyo (9-7, 3.31)

I hate to be "that guy", but I don't feel any better about this team after last night. They were facing a craptacular pitcher, and still only managed six hits on the night. I'm thrilled that they won, but man this still looks like a significantly worse team.

I was going to be funny and post a picture of a smiling baby (since the baby doesn't have to stay under the laundry basket anymore), but finding a cute baby via Google image search is nigh impossible. Plus most babies are ugly.

So anyway, go Reds!

Batting Order?
Anyone know the batting order for today?

by chandrathan on Aug 5, 2006 11:14 AM EDT reply actions

let's not overreact
I agree that last night's win wasn't easy enough to settle all fears about the team.  However, as I've mentioned before, this team has been streaky all year; before and after the trades.  I still think Castro and Denorfia should get more time but Clayton has had moments and Freel is playing well.  I just think Freel needs a bit more rest so he doesn't get hurt down the stretch.  I really think, given a regular opportunity, Denorfia would contribute.  I'd like to see them play him again tonight so he has a little continuity.  I would give Freel or Griffey a rest, especially after the amount of energy Freel expended last night.  Let's also remember that this team has many new players.  Hopefully, this losing streak is a result of the adjustment a team must go through before it gels.  We'll see.

Looking at the lineup is kinda like getting an enema.  I try to avoid it as much as possible.

Ladies and gentlemen...
The end is near. The Reds can't compete with a crappy offense if Arroyo's gonna pitch like Joe Mays.

FOX
Really sucks.  I live in Terre Haute, Indiana which is a "territory" for the Reds, Cubs, White Sox, and Cardinals. We get both FSN Cincinnati and FSN Midwest.  But what game is on our local Foz affiliate right now??  Not The Reds like the Cable Guide says.   The Friggin Phillies and Mets.  Who gives a shit about that game??  Fox should really make affiliates be regional in their games.

Ok thanks, I just needed to vent.

Carry on.

get streaming audio
go to mlb.com, for $14.95 for a year, you can sign up for a whole season of listening to any mlb game you want to.

14.95 is what you'd pay for two beers and peanuts at a single game. not to mention the ticket price, parking, etc.

Arroyo
89 pitches though 5 innings.  And Castro has a hit and 2 walks in 3 plate appearances. Keep him in and sit Clayton, especially if you won't consider BP or Bad Man at SS.  Castro is batting .325 since joining the Reds, with 4 doubles and 2 HRs in 52 ABs.

Stupid Question
Why did Narron let Bronson bat with 2 men on if he was going to get yanked??

by MixFMKyle on Aug 5, 2006 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think Narron planned on yanking him
until he gave up the HR and single.  Not managing with his heart today.  So the next stupid question is, what organ is he using?

It doesnt make sense.  Only one runner on first.

by MixFMKyle on Aug 5, 2006 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Bronson
was pitching on three days rest. Narron probably set a pitch limit. Then he gave up a homer to start the inning. Lately, when he's given up a big inning, it seems to be with two outs.

The Reds have a player in the DSL
by the name of Ramon Geronimo who has picked up 20 saves in his 21 games pitched.  He's thrown 22.2 innings, given up 10 hits, 8 walks, and has 27 strikeouts.  He has yet to give up an earned run.  That's right, his ERA is 0.00.  He's 0-1 due to 2 unearned runs.  Now for the bad news.  He's 22.  Is that a bit old for the DSL?
Reds fan for 40 years!

by gejoe on Aug 5, 2006 5:04 PM EDT reply actions

I also noticed
they have a 17 uear old in the VSL with a 6-2 record as a starter (11 games stared out of 13 appearances) and an overalll ERA of 2.35.  53.2 IP, 45 H, 14 BB, 1 HR, 28 Ks.  I like the 17 year-old part, the 1 HR par,t and the ERA part.  Hits are OK, but the Ks are too few, and I'd like to see fewer BBs.  What do you guys (and gals) think?  In the SHOW by 2009 as a 20 year-old?!?!  By the way, his name is Oscar Castro.  Any relation?

Was at the game
with 33,169 of my closest friends.

It was my fifth game this year and the fourth time I've seen Dunn homer.

The offense has picked up a little since the sixth inning of last night, but they still only had 7 hits today despite the 8 runs.

Even though he did fall on his face during a defensive play, Brandon Phillips was the MAN today.  He had an excellent game.

The bullpen hates Bronson Arroyo, that's the only explanation.

And that's all.  I'll be helping to "pack the house" on Monday for anyone that wants to have a beer together, I'm in section 142!
