Game Thread: Game 109 vs. the Braves

TIME: 7:05 @ Great American Ball Park

BRAVES PROBABLE:
         REDS PROBABLE:
Chuck James (4-2, 4.87)       Aaron Harang (11-7, 3.62)

The lineups already been posted in about three different places here so I'm not going to bother posting it again, but my god Jerry Narron doesn't deserve to be a major league manager.

I obviously hope the Reds win, but it's  bittersweet if they do,  because dumbass might think hitting Clayton second worked out. Ugh.

Tonight's Lineup
is like a hybrid of a AAA team and an old-timers game roster. That is seriously f'd up. I have been giving Narron the benefit of the doubt while he is learning the strengths and weaknesses of our our new acquisitions. I have come to the conclusion that he may have a severe learning disability.

The Reds
want people to show up in big numbers and then run this crap out on the field? It's embarrassing!

They should show the lineup outside the stadium gates so fans can change their minds before they buy seats.

I reconfigured my work schedule
this week so that I could make it to the game tonight. After the past couple of days, and then after seeing tonight's poorly constructed lineup, I've decided I'm not spending money to watch this crapfest.
I can't freakin' believe that I have to say that I'm not going, but aside from the fact that it's Harang pitching tonight, I just can't do it.

by Ash on Aug 4, 2006 6:01 PM EDT reply actions

...and who the hell is Chuck James?
Is he a rookie? I can't take much more of this...

by Ash on Aug 4, 2006 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

I answered my own questions
He had an ERA under 2 in 2 starts in June. Since then, it's slowly gone bad, culminating in a 7 ER performance in 1+ IP his last time out vs. the Mets.
Man, I'd love to actually, oh, I don't know... score some runs tonight. Maybe?

by Ash on Aug 4, 2006 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Andruw Jones
could sell tickets...

I'd bet that the Cards are interested.

From mlbtraderumors.com -

We know more than one team put in a claim on Jones.  Because he's in the NL, NL teams get first rights to Jones.  That's why I'd guess that the team awarded the claim is not the Angels or Red Sox.

What if it was the Cubs, with an eye towards being competitive in 2007?  Would the Brewers, Astros, Reds, or Cardinals get involved?

If a deal were made, I would have to think the team sending away younger player(s) would have a handshake deal with a team like the Cubs to let the kids through.

Yeah, like Krivsky would try to get someone good
Silly rabbit. And it's not like Junior would move from center, either.

How do you guys find the lineups in advance?

by MirrorLakeJump on Aug 4, 2006 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

Here's the latest joke...
Freel RF
Clayton SS
Griffey CF
Aurilia 1B
Encarnacion 3B
Phillips 2B
Denorfia LF
LaRue C
Harang P

...Marc Lancaster usually has it up in his blog early in the day.

by Ash on Aug 4, 2006 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Where would you rather be tonight?
GABP or Georgetown?

The Bengals have some buzz about them, I go with G'town.  BP is the only Red, to me, who seems like he really enjoys playing the game...like Chad Johnson does.

Freel plays all out, Coffey sprints from the pen, Hatte give it his all each AB.  Well maybe BA, he has a little pep.

by ohiobobcat on Aug 4, 2006 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

I'm not even a Bengals fan...
...And I'd rather be in Georgetown with that lineup out there.

by mattg on Aug 4, 2006 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

Hey JD...
Not a huge deal, but for probable starters you have "Dodgers Probable:"
The only reason I mention this is because I'm superstitious and last time it happened it said "Brewers Probable" (I think) while we were playing the Braves, and that series didn't go so well.

Edwin swung
and fouled the pitch off, and the catcher kinda jumped up and I guess his glove just made contact with the bat or something. The ump jumped out and signaled interference, and Edwin just kinda stood there for a second before taking the base.

Freel
Ran a long way to catch a ball in foul territory.  He dove for the ball and caught it, and everyone expected the runner on 2nd to go to third.  Freel, however, popped up very quickly and threw strongly to third to hold the runner.  Then Weathers stranded the runner.

What the hell
was that thing I just watched on TV? It was ugly, strange, exciting, depressing, and the Reds won at the end... being a Reds fan is like nothing else.

Yup.
I've got that "anything is possible" feeling right now. I hope I'm not fooling myself.

A couple of things...
Aaron Harang is awesome. He's awesome even on nights when he doesn't have his best stuff. He's gotten consistently better since he came over from Oakland, and tonight set a career high in wins with 12. It's August 4th, I'm willing to bet he's gonna get a few more before the season's over.
Gary Majewski... not so much. I'm not even gonna look up his numbers since he's come over because it's probably worse than I already think.
Ryan Freel, occasional bouts of baserunning stupidity aside, is an absolute asset to this team.
If I ever see a lineup this horrible again, I'm turning the tv/radio off, or if I'm at the stadium, I'm going home.
Who wants to bet that we don't see Edwin in there for a few days? He's got, what? 45 RBI? In very limited playing time. I know, I know, the errors, but man, he's got the bat.

Go Brewers, Go Astros.

EdE's throw
was that bad, but Rich should have had it.  Tough luck.  E-5.

I hope
it doesn't land him on the bench...he's got to learn to get the throw under control in the games and the only way to do that is to play him.

St Louis loses again
After all this we're only 2.5 back.

I just got in from an Irish Festival. Looks like a good win. Great news the Cards lost too!

5-4 caleb
it was one of the kookiest games i've seen all year, and there's no way we should have won. and we did.

This is incredible
We shoulkd have seen this maybe 3 games ago? bu I really I'm feeling this:

Team    W    L    PCT    GB
St. Louis    58    50    .537       -
Cincinnati    56    53    .514       2.5

I hope we can keep this going. A wiing streak would be really nice right about now. The Cards are f a  d  i    n   g   .  .   .

I'm really glad
I decided to go to the ole ball yard tonight!

WOW that was exciting.  I second guessed Narron all night, and it was pretty bad the Hatteberg, Dunn, and Ross were all on the bench, but I was glad to eat it when the Reds won.

Royce will never be benched now
The Reds win in no way excuses the lineup construction mistakes.

you're right
Clayton's HR was a laser, BTW.

And I hope you don't think I was saying that the win means the lineup was fine.  I don't think that at all.

Some thoughts
Since I wasn't in the game thread, here's my summarization:
  • McClayton is now our starting shortstop for all eternity.  And is anybody else scared by the fact that he's hit 2 home runs this week?  I've been to church 3 times since last night, just to be safe.
  • Was it just me, or did that home run by Clayton completely ignite some fire into the fans?  It looked like there was a pretty big crowd there last night, and I don't think I've seen home fans be as raucous all year as they were from the 6th inning onward.  Good times.
  • EdE's error was completely his fault.  He short-armed the throw, I guess in an attempt to not airmail over Richie's head.  That being said, it wasn't a terrible hop to handle and I think that a first baseman with more experience at the position probably makes that play.  After he made the error, EdE had a look on his face of "great, now I'm not starting for a week."
  • The suicide squeeze attempt was foolish.  The Reds were starting to hit the ball and then Jerry tries to get fancy.  Have the Reds ever had a successful suicide attempt?
  • Juan Castro is batting .314 with a .824 OPS since coming to the Reds.  He's started just 4 times since McClayton came to the team.
  • Harang is a beast.  Even when he's off, he's still pretty damn good.
  • The Magi is dead to me.  His arm is dead to him, methinks.
  • I think it was fitting that El Guapo pulled a Danny Graves in the game last night.  Those last three innings were very exciting, and getting out of a bases loaded, no out jam was the icing on the cake.  But only because they won.
  • All that being said, wins like last night are not the wins of playoff teams.  They should have destroyed Chuck James, who has been dreadful for the past month.  Scraping out a win in that situation does not make me feel any better about their chances, though I will always prefer winning to losing no matter how it happens.
  • One last note: Ash, the Reds were last shutout on back-to-back games on May 26th and 27th versus the D-backs.  Since you asked.
