Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Thursday Links

  • Baseball Minutia with a hodgepodge of stuff. I was particularly interested in the PECOTA comps. Things could really get ugly around here if guys like David Ross and Scott Hatteberg regress to their means without getting picked up by guys like Griff.
  • Yeah, I don't disagree with this. God help me, but I think I'm slanting more and more negative towards Krivsky every day.
  • Shocking.
  • Barry Bonds' 715th home run is on sale on Ebay. Bidding is over $150,000.
  • Cory Lidle is kind of a dick. I think he said some not kind things about Cincinnati when he left here, so this isn't terribly surprising.

Has been picked off of 1st base 6 times this season.  Does his brain just take a snooze or what?

i think
he's hit his head on too many walls...

how many ...
CS does he have? That has to be the majority. And he almost got picked a second time on one of Dunn's strikeouts last night. What a horrible double play that would have been.

Not to defend Lidle...
but Billy Wagner said basically the same thing when he left.  Makes you wonder if there isn't some truth to it.  As much gloom and doom as there is in Reds Nation, imagine what life must be like in Philly. At least when Kriv made "The Trade", he returned a couple useful major leaguers and a decent back up and a prospect. Gillick just gave away Abreu and Lidle for nothing with the team only 3.5 out of the wild card and nobody playing well.

by matchu522 on Aug 3, 2006 1:30 PM EDT reply actions

So much for the Wild Card Lead
.. the D-Backs are up 6-0 after after the top of the second

by indy on Aug 3, 2006 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

Dbacks
They're playing a doubleheader today, so they can still drop the second one.

by Red Menace on Aug 3, 2006 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Uh
And the Reds will win tonight, so the worst that will happen is a tie.  But the Dbacks will lose one of two.

Oh, and I'm about 0 for 964 on predictions this year.

by Slyde on Aug 3, 2006 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

so why don't you predict
that the d'backs will win two today

by Daedalus on Aug 3, 2006 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

We could be 2 games up,
1 game up, tied or 1 game behind.  The possibilities are seemingly endless - isn't it exciting!?  BTW, I didn't see a frisbee up on the roof, just a burned out bottle rocket and a tennis ball stuck in the downspout.  Now if we get rained out tonight, we could be a half game up, a half game back or one game up.  Now, if the Diamondbacks win the first game, but the second game gets rained out......

by neckbeard on Aug 3, 2006 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Padres
The Padres have the same record as the Reds and currently lead the NL West by 1/2 game.

An Arizona win in game 1 puts them and the Padres in a tie for the division and with the Reds for the wildcard.  The key for the Reds tonight is to win (surprise!) and only 1 of the D-backs or Padres have to lose tonight for the Reds to retain sole possession of the WC lead.

by rojosoto on Aug 3, 2006 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I just saw the standings
and came here to say the exact same thing... three minutes too late! ;)

C'mon Reds, start winning and we can stop all of this "if this team loses..." madness.

Request to JD for tonight's games
Anyway we can get the Milton Red Stapler back up for tonight's game? Last time you broke it out, we ended a pretty brutal loosing streak...

I'm willing to try anything to get a Win tonight. It's basbeall superstitions are part of the game

by indy on Aug 3, 2006 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

I have a request also
I say maybe JD should change the "Are the Reds for real?" poll on the main page to a question concerning Narron and his ability to manage, or maybe something specifically about playing Aurilia at SS instead of Clayton to get Edwin in there every day. I know the more vocal of the readers on the site, myself included, have shared our opinions over and over again, but I'm interested to see how everyone feels.

$220,100 winning bid on #715
Yeah, I'd spend that $220K on... anything else.

by Ash on Aug 3, 2006 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

Here's tonight's lineup
Freel RF
Hatteberg 1B
Griffey CF
Dunn LF
Aurilia 2B
Encarnacion 3B
Valentin C
Clayton SS
Milton P

Y'know, I've gotta ask...why is Javy in the lineup? Why is Javy still on this team? His OPS starts with a .5 when he's starting games this year, I'm pretty sure. While LaRue is overpaid and shitty, he's still better than the Latin Love Machine, who was apparently pimping the HGH pretty heavily last year. If we can't trade LaRue, please freaking dump Javy for somebody competent.

by Geki on Aug 3, 2006 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

Apparently Valentin
kills Maddux, according to a poster on Marc's site.

by pw on Aug 3, 2006 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Aurilla at second???
only if we had Phillips at short now...

As for Javy and why he is on the team, he's only only left handed bat off the bench (at least typically, tonight we have no left handed bats off the bench). As unsuccesful as he's been this year (besides his two HUGE homeruns) we all know how much Narron loves the situational matchups, and needs that lefty down there.

by indy on Aug 3, 2006 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I HATE ROYCE CLAYTON
as much as Bill Hall, anyway.  He does the same amount of damage to the Reds.
This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.

by Daedalus on Aug 3, 2006 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

3 lefties in a row
Would it take an act of God to move Jr out of the 3-hole?  I don't mind Hatteberg batting 2nd with his high OBP, but the Dunn has a high OBP also.  In this lineup, I'd have slide Dunn to 3rd, Jr to 4th and hit Encarnacion 5th.  Aurilia has terrible stats vs RH-pitchers.

by rojosoto on Aug 3, 2006 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Ya know..
If I'm Grady Little, I bring in a lefty reliever at the first opportunity.

by sidnancy on Aug 3, 2006 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank God
The Dodgers only have one in their bullpen.   More than likely that is the only reason Narron did what he did, and Hatteberg and Dunn really do not hit all that bad against lefties.

When was the last time
Edwin was in the lineup on consecutive days?

by Ash on Aug 3, 2006 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I laughed at that when
I realized that as pathetic as it is, he probably hasn't been in a lineup for consecutive games since then.

Being a Reds fan lately is the equivalent of beating one's head against a brick wall.

by Ash on Aug 3, 2006 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

July 21st and 22nd.  It actually was his 3rd straight day in the lineup, a stretch where he went 5 for 11 with 2 doubles and a homerun.  He's started in 3 of the 9 games since then.

by Slyde on Aug 3, 2006 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I realize that was a hypothetical question
but I thought it was amazing that not only does it seem like EdE never gets to play, he really never does get to play.

The most amazing thing to me about Narron is his inability to ride the hot hand or sit the cold one.  There have been a couple of times this year when Freel was scorching at the plate, but was put on the bench.  And then the same thing just happened to EdE.  Yet McClayton gets sent out there every night despite having an OPS 166 points lower than Castro's since the two have joined the Reds.

Bo Sox
Interested in Baltimore's Javy Lopez, Cincinnati's Jason LaRue, Toronto's Benjie Molina, and Arizona,s Johnny Estrada.

LaRue name was floated on waivers right before the deadline.

Larue to Boston
If Krivsky can get this done, for anybody in exchange, the Reds will be a better team.

by Red Menace on Aug 3, 2006 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if we have to eat his
salary, I think that we would be a better team.

by MixFMKyle on Aug 3, 2006 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Boston
How do you say "La DeuxDePlay" with a Boston accent?

I'd sure love to hear that, followed by any combination of "wicked" and "sucks".

by ohiobobcat on Aug 3, 2006 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe we should organize a campaign
where we each mail one lineup card to Jerry Narron with Aurilia at SS and EE at 3B?  Maybe he would get it then.

by Blue on Aug 3, 2006 4:49 PM EDT reply actions

I like it
I would request Phillips at SS, Aurilla at 2B and edE at 3B, no? I seriously believe that would be the best line-up for offfense AND defense for the Reds.

D'backs @ Cubs, Game #2
Cubs up 3-0 after 1. I hope that the Cub pitcher making his ML debut can keep the snakes in check.
