This isn't good

standings

Star-divide

The reds have managed to allow more runs than they've scored.  This doesn't bode well.  Somehow they have more wins than they should and its still not enough.

the pen
is just another name for the Nightmare on Pete Rose Way. The trade is coming with in the next week that will make or break the Reds season, I can feel it.

Displaced..where are you?

Maybe
I've spent too much time following them the last few seasons, but don't color me optimistic about a big trade.

We have new blood and new thought processes in charge now. it's coming...

What's coming?
Caleb, what makes you think any changes will be significant enough to actually make a difference?   I hope you're right! But I just wonder what can really be done that will have any big impact.... they need at least 1 or 2 new arms in the pen, and probably another SP.

my thoughts
I think he will make a trade that brings a bonafide starter to the Reds. He will have to give up some combination of Freel, Aurilia, and LaRue. They will bring up 2 pitchers from the minors and move Mays to long relief

Who's dealing?
There's a ton of teams still in it so who in there right mind will trade away a bonafide SP?  I don't want Oliver Perez.

by bonafide
I don't mean a number one. I mean a solid guy who can give you 6+ innings every time out. Or how about Smoltz?

Lopez to go?
I'm wondering if Lopez will be one of the ones to go. I doubt he will get a long-term contract because of his fielding and because he is a Boras client. Lopez and LaRue ought to fetch something good. BP or Castro can play SS. We don't want to lose FeLo's offense, but you have to give up something to get something.

young guys
Lopez and EdE are still young guys. I really think the Reds need to be patient with them> Concepcion and Larkin were pretty shaky on defense their first few years also.

Options
They could trade Lopez, an outfielder (most likely Kearns), and a catcher (Larue or LLM). I'd be OK with Denorfia playing everyday and the combo of Olmedo, Freel, and Aurilia at 2B. They could also trade Denorfia since Javon Moran is putting up similar numbers at AA and should be in line for a promotion soon. Kelly, Gosling, Germano, and until his last start, Dumatrait have all been solid lately. I'd like to see at least two of them in the pen soon.

My Bad
Gosling got rocked tonight. Still might be better in the pen.

olmedo
I don't want him any where near the line up.Kearns is going to be one of those guys who ends up his career with 300+ HR's, over 2000 hits, 1200 RBI and 400+ doubles. Hopefully he does most of that with the Reds. Denorfia is probably ready so it will be interesting to see what they do with him

Olmedo/Kearns
Not sure I'd want Olmedo playing everyday at this point, but he'd be ok giving Freel some days off and I'd much rather have him off the bench than Q or Larue as a pinch hitter. I don't really want the Reds to trade Kearns, but if they deal an outfielder, he probably goes before JR or Dunn.

Maybe Wayne can work out a deal where the Reds and Pirates trade pens.  5.32 vs. 4.07.

...Some combination of Freel, Aurilia, and LaRue?
The latter two have virtually no trade value to any teams that have any business trading their extra pitching. Any deal that gets rid of Freel would be horrible for the team.

Lee May, Jimmy Stewart, Tommy Helms
I hated the trade when the Reds got rid of these three to Houston. But then they got Morgan, Geronimo and jack Billingham. Sometimes you have to give up something. Maybe an old fashioned three way deal.

Simply
If the Reds had the pieces to get something done they would have done it.  Unfortunately this isn't a playoff team. Its just not.

Playoffs
I hate this team.  Well I hate that I finally bought in during the 8 game win streak only to have to deal with this now.  BUT, while we truly have NO chance to win the division with our currsent staff, we do have a pretty good chance to get the wild card.  Everyone in the east is terrible except for the Mets, and as for the west, everyone is going to beat up on each other, so it will be extremely unlikely that they put two teams into the playoffs.  So it comes down to the central.  I believe that the wild card will be the Reds or the Brewers.  If we can get 1 really good arm (bonafide closer) or 2 good arms, we should be just fine.  If we keep adding Yans and bringing up guys like Burns and Schakleford, then the Brewers will likely pass us when they get Ohka and Sheets back.

you are forgetting one thing
the cardinals are pretty awful, too, and their pen has been horrible.  so, anything is possible.

You're right
We knew that going in, how easy it is to get trapped into thinking they are playoff material.
They played way over their heads in April and have leveled off since.

treading water
We sure are going to be treading water for a long time if we don't have the pieces to improve this team via trade.  Pretty poor free agent market coming up for pitchers.

However, I think we do have the pieces to trade, at least for bullpen help.  Given how good our everyday lineup is, we would probably be better off trading guys like Denorfia and Votto for relief help.  I figure Denorfia could bring back one late-inning reliever and Votto could bring two.

Ken Rosenthal says....
"The Reds continue to shop catcher Jason LaRue, and an official with one rival club says the team is willing to pick up part of LaRue's remaining $3.9 million salary this season and $5.2 million salary next season. Good luck: LaRue is batting just .178 in reduced playing time, and most contenders are set at catcher. Rival clubs continue to press the Reds about Triple-A outfielder Chris Denorfia, who boasts a .401 on-base percentage and is 13-for-14 in stlen-base attempts .."
