Gamethread: Game 100 vs. the Astros

TIME: 8:05 @ Minute Maid Park

ASTROS PROBABLE:
               REDS PROBABLE:
Roger Clemens (2-3, 2.43)       Aaron Harang (10-6, 3.72)

This is kind of cool:

Red Reporter went over a million total pageviews last night

Love games against Clemens, it's such a thrill when the Reds beat a pitcher this good. Hopefully we'll get that thrill tonight.

Go Reds!

But Odalis Perez
Has pitched somewhat better than Joe Mays.  I would say he probably was about as good as Brandon Claussen.  He represents good value.

What is wrong with Aurilia at SS?
What are his defensive metrics at SS?

Clayton
we've already got a scappy old guy at SS.

by Blue on Jul 25, 2006 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

He's only played 2 games this year
but he's been slightly below average over the last couple of years.  And so has Clayton...if you're wondering.

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

That's what I figured...
Which means there is even less reason not to play Aurilia at SS instead of McClayton, because you clearly gain offense.

d metrics
Most defensive metrics have Royce in the third or fourth quartile. Imagine if they took his O into consideration.

He's on his sixth team in five years, which sums it up nicely.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 25, 2006 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess
It's because Clayton's OPS is 583 points higher against Clemens than EdE.  That's why he's starting tonight.

Guardado research
From BP 2006:

2004 2W 2L 18Sv 0.99WHIP 2.78ERA

2005 2W 3L 36Sv 1.19WHIP 2.72ERA

VORPs of 22.3, 17.3, 12.7

I hadn't realized his numbers were that strong over the past three seasons.  Nice move by Kriv, which is paying huge dividends.

There is no amount of research that can support Narron benching EE for the 2nd straight game. Doofus.

He struggled in 5 of his first 7 outings this season.  His ERA was 10.80 on April 24th, but since then he has kicked mondo ass.  He's been quite the pickup that El Guapo.

by redsgal44 on Jul 25, 2006 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

EE
I think it was the Enquirer yesterday that referred to Aurilia as a corner infielder. I wanted to pull my hair out. He's been a shortstop his whole career, and as lately as last year. They quoted Narron saying how he'd like to get them all in the lineup, but can't. Edwin at third, Aurilia at short, Hatte at first. There! It's not that hard.

by Red Menace on Jul 25, 2006 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

McClayton.

Gameday just says he was caught stealing home.  Was it a straight steal?

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Freel broke for second and
the catcher bluffed to second, and I guess McClayton broke for home. If that was a planned play, then booo - Dunn is hitting over .500 against Clemens, don't run yourself out of the inning.

Who's Tracy Jones, then?
Or maybe he doesn't know how to type?

or thinking he has
a variety show with the drunk, the (fake) rich guy, and his ugly stalker lady. I listened for 33 minutes the other day before he gave the score of the game.

It's a great day for America!
Reds win! I'm going until midnight, then the Bozo. Slyde, I'm hanging up on you. You don't know what you're talking about. Just like those Cubs fans. Now I'm going to play that audio from the early 80s of Cubs manager GM ripping the fans at Wrigley.

Andy...
Yeah, I was just wondering what you thought about...hello?  hello?  are you there?

by Slyde on Jul 26, 2006 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Eh, so what he hung up on you...
This is the guy who said that there was "no chance" that the Reds would come back and beat the Mets after the rain delay...

I'm not sure how this compares to
the rest of the pitchers in baseball, but Aaron Harang has now made 67 straight starts in which he has given up 3 or fewer walks. That is impressive. Walks do no good to a pitcher, and he doesn't give them up excessively.

I miss the old scoreboard
I'm trying to find an image of "Walks will haunt."

by Red Menace on Jul 26, 2006 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

They still show that, right?
I could've sworn that I've seen it more than once this season...

walks will haunt
it might still be there, but it's probably with a computer generated Gapper wearing a sheet over his head or something stupid like that.

Give me the two monotone clapping hands that have no discernable rhythm any day of the week.

I really miss
the old Kahn's Big Red Smokey commercial--the hot dog that thinks it's a smoked sausage. "Mmmmmmmm..."

Brewers
it looks like Sheets is back now looking as good as the other guy from Sunday ( whose name is escaping me). Hopefully they trade Lee and other (Bill Hall to the AL?) and we won't care who they throw.

Soriano
i sure hope he gets traded to a NL team. My redreporter fantasy team can't afford to lose him.

Karma
Soriano will go to the AL and you will fall out of first. It's the only way to balance the universe after your ridiculous larceny of Alfonso made your team near unstoppable.

unbalanced world
and I'll be stuck playing some one like Nick McLouth. Don't do it Bowden!!

BTW, I wanted to say sorry
for the 1,000,000 hits. I put the auto-refresh Firefox extension on every 5 seconds and left it all day to see what it would do. It works. Download it. Use it. Love it. Help pay the bills around here.

Anyone else heard the quote about the fire department being in his office because his phone is on fire?

What happens...
When the thread goes so far over 300 posts like this?

Does JD's computer start saying "error...error...faulty..." and spew out white smoke?

Nah, he just starts
getting e-mail from all of the other guys that run SB Nation blogs complaining that he's making them look bad.

by Ash on Jul 26, 2006 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Oops... here's the rest...
...he's making them look bad. Wisely, JD just starts up a new thread to confuse them, it works, and they leave him alone.

Good question.
I've wondered myself but just figured it was a "blogger's decision".

300
300 comments isn't bad, but it slows down the loading time for those with slower connections.

At 400 comments the thread explodes though. No, seriously, it breaks something in the blogging software we use and all of the threaded conversations collapse.

Good news
Every team that is within 6 games of the Reds in the Wild Card besides the D-backs (2 back) and the Marlins (6 back) lost tonight.  I should say, assuming the Dodgers can't come back against the Padres (down 4-3 in the 7th).  That's a productive night.
