doubt it
Narron loves him too much to let him go.

Did Aurilia forget how to play SS?
Surely we could have the Bad Man, EE and the Mad Hatter in the lineup at the same time?  Right?

Too many pitches (19), but I like the goosegg.
Hope Narron left his heart in San Francicco, or anywhere else, but not at the stadium.

Narron
I thought he managed a pretty good game yesterday...with maybe the exception of PHing for Hatteburg late in the game...but that worked out too.

I don't understand why EE is out after such a great game...and defense to boot....Don't get it.

CPD and Bengals DT M. Askew
Sad to hear the CPD had to utilize the tasers on a Bengal last evening in South Cumminsville.

Didn't they know Bill Hall was in town?  They should have simply flared up the Bat signal, and Hall wouldve been forced to leave last nights game around 8pm.

I think he would be a nice addition and would obviate the need for Narron to get his mind around the complexity of shifting BP to shortstop.

Furthermore, it would probably subtract a good number of runs created from the Reds' opposition, considering how many times they play the Brewers.

Go for it Wayne!

Well
you cant win ball games with just 5 hits.  Milton pitched well, just the Reds used up all their Offense bailing out The Lizard and Mays this weekend.  Lets hope for good against the slumping Assholes....I mean Astros.

I think there was plenty of
critiquing going on before the fact. Daedauls mentioned that Maj doesn't do well with inherited runners, and she should know, having closely followed Maj all season. We all lamented not having Edwin in there before the game even started.

I wanted...
Jason Strandridge, who hasn't let an inherited runner score yet, but he was probably unavailable because of the Joe Mays Experience last night.

Narron
1)Agree

2)Why take out a guy that has given up 1 hit, 1 walk, and no runs in the 3rd/4th/5th/6th innings. Carlos Lee was 7 - 39 against Milton without only 1 extra base hit, so Milton SHOULD have been able to get out of the 7th also. But then again people would have went bezerk if he kept him in there.

3)If Maj can't come in with 2 men on and 2 outs when can he? Yeah Coffey might have done the job too but they both should have been able to. Therefore you could keep Coffey incase something in the 8th goes wrong.

I'm not saying Narron made all the right decisions but it seem like people are quick to put the blame on him. Reds as a team just played bad.

by Stevo154 on Jul 23, 2006 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Well
  1. We all do. : )
  2. True, Milton was throwing well after teh early 2 run inning, but we needed to generate some runs, so I just thought it would have been wise (but not Dewayne Wise) to give us a better chance at getting some runs with a better leadoff hitter, like, I don't know, EdE, maybe? Also, as has been pointed out Milton's ERA tends to dramatically increase in the later innings.
  3. I take you're point here. We should be able to go to Maj. My only arguement is that people have been saying that he has been overused. That and I just feel more confident with Coffey in that situation.
I don't want to bash Narron, I just don't like some of the moves and the lineups. But yes, the Reds played bad today. They had their chances and just didn't come through. Let's hope the Cards lose tonight.

Cheers.

by satyanaas on Jul 23, 2006 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Further to what's been said
I really thought Narron would PH for Eric Milton leading off the 7th inning to try to generate some offense. That seems like it would have been a good move. We had a guys in the bullpen as well as an off day tomorrow, so I don't think saving the bullpen should have been a factor.

I appreciate your thought, but foresight can be 20/20 too.

by satyanaas on Jul 23, 2006 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm with Ash on this.
There have been a number of blunders and non-moves lately (e.g., "I heart Milton" and pinch hitting for EdE vs. the Mets) that plenty of people have been critiquing as they happen and before they happen.

I think the fact that you're getting a bit personally invested in Majewski (because you like the trade and people are criticizing Majewski) has clouded your judgment a bit.  Please read the comments and check the times they were made.  The EdE complaints started as soon as the lineups were posted.  That's hardly 20-20 hindsight.  Putting Coffey in to handle a high-leverage situation in the later innings is exactly what people have been asking for all year long.

The argument you are making is like the following:  Suppose there was a narcoleptic who is prone to falling asleep anywhere, anytime without any warning, even behind the wheel of a car, although he doesn't do it very often.  Out of the kindness of his heart, the owner of a pizza place hires him as a delivery driver and sends him out every night.  Basically, you are telling us that we can't criticize the owner of the pizza place because he is doing something stupid and dangerous.  Let's say he runs over someone's cat because he falls asleep at the wheel one night.  Are you saying that we can't criticize the owner of the pizza place after the fact for doing something stupid and dangerous because we don't say anything on the nights when the narcoleptic doesn't get into an accident?

And From JinAZ:
"6th inning, starting to lose it. A single followed by two consecutive fly outs, both of which were reasonably well hit. Barnwell's ground out might have tempted me to leave him in for the 7th, but not at the cost of letting Milton lead off the bottom of the 6th inning. He'd be done at this point if I were managing"

ARod's situation is completely different
ARod is STRUGGLING in all aspects this week, and yet the only reason he was "benched" was because he fouled a ball off of his foot and had to have X-rays.  Either way, the guy had 5 errors this week and is 4 for his last 27, so even if he had been "benched" it would make sense.  His head is out of whack right now - something you might expect to happen when your home fans boo you for every little mistake.

As for EdE, he's made one error since he came off of the DL and that was over 2 weeks ago.  Is he still be punished for that?  And I don't know what math you are using to figure he'd be on pace for 60 errors, but he's made 15 errors in 58 games played.  That's more like 40 for a full season - not that 40 is good, but maybe you could reel in the hyperbole a little bit.

Of course, I haven't even brought up yet how EdE is tearing the cover off of the ball (.478/.556/.696/1.251 in July) or that he's still only 23 and is improving every day.  I don't know why you would want him on the bench.  If I'm the manager, I'm finding every way possible to get him in the lineup right now.

EE
EE has started 56 games at 3b and has had 15 errors thus far. There are also 63 games left in the season.  Thus if he started every game for the rest of the season he would have approximately 32 errors [15 + (15/56)*63]. Yes, 32 errors is bad but lets looks at his monthly totals.

Month  Errors  Throwing Type  Fielding Type
--------------------------------------------
April    |   8     |        6       |      2
May     |   5     |        2       |      3
June    |   1     |        1       |      0
July     |   1     |        1       |      0
--------------------------------------------
Total   |  15     |        10      |      5

It's pretty obvious that his fielding started out REALLY bad. In fact on 4/12 he had 3 errors, and in the first two weeks of the season he had 6 errors. He then started out May with 3 errors in one week (05/7 - 05/14). However things improved from then on.

Assuming EE starts about as many games as he did in May, through the rest of the season, he'll have about 11 more errors which puts him at about 26. I have reason to believe that he can put up a little less than 5 errors a month based on his improvements month by month. Therefore, I believe it is more likely that he'll have about 22/23 errors if he played as much as he did through May for the rest of the year.

I understand that 11 errors throughout the rest of the season is not acceptable, however assumming Aurilia starts the rest of the games you have 8.5 errors [((Games started/errors) * Games left) = ((4/30)*63)]. 2.5 errors less than EE.

Now the question is can EE make up those 3 errors or so with his bat? Some more stats:

AB   Runs HR RBI OBP SLG OPS
---------------------------------------------
EE      |  208  32    7    41  .386 .505 .891
Aurilia | 247  39    12   37  .339 .494 .833

EE has a considerably better bat than Aurilia. Now i'm not suggesting that EE should start every day. I understand that Aurilia had a hot streak. Narron should play that streak out. I also realize that he may make more errors than my assumptions but so what? We have 4 players on this team that can play 3b (Freel/Aurilia/Castro/EE). If EE starts making a bunch of errors (which he hasn't thus far) sit him down, or take him out late in the game.

This offense really needs a righty with power to help balance the lineup and EE fits that role. He probably shouldnt start every day but definetly more than anyone else at 3b. Hopefully, this one will work itself out within the next few weeks as Aurilia's bat cools off some.

NIce post, but...
As much as I like EE (and I agree with your conclusion), you have to figure in the fact that he was on the DL for most of June and wasn't activated until July 7 (and has been riding the pine a lot ever since), which is why his monthly error rate seems to drop precipitously then.  If you post a monthly "errors per game started," that might help your argument a bit regarding his defensive "improvement."

Defense Improvement
I admit that it is kind of hard to evaluate a player that hasnt played much. I just think it is important to note that minus the two first weeks of the year he has 9 errors. He may or may not have improved since may (I certainly hope he hass). I just feel we have enough guys to fall back on that he should atleast get a shot to lose the position.

Astro Series Pitchin Probs

Tue  Harang vs. Clemens

Wed  Arroyo vs. Pettite

Thur Lizard vs. Buckholz

I like the matchups for this series.  The Astros have struggled to get runs for The Rocket, and Harang was dominant last time at Minute Maid Park.  Another 2 of of 3 would be real nice.

Phillips homer
I was at the game, and Phillips homer was about 2 rows away from going where I have always said a ball will never land, in the top rows of the outfield seats under the overhanging bleachers.  That ball was well struck.
