Game Thread: Game 80 vs. the Indians

TIME: 7:10 @ Great American Ball Park

INDIANS PROBABLE:
     REDS PROBABLE:
Paul Byrd (6-5, 4.37)       Elizardo Ramirez (3-6, 3.61)

The Indians again? Already? One of the odder parts of interleague play has to be seeing Cleveland in back to back weekends. I'll never get used to it.

A win tonight would be big, and the Reds probably need to take tonight's game if they want a shot at the series. We've got ol' Joe Mays going tomorrow night, and you just never really know when it comes to our fifth starters.

This Lizard's a pretty good pitcher.

Go Reds!

Tonight's Titanic Struggle
I'm hanging out at BW3s for the first couple of innings.  It sucks not having my own internet connection, but I felt like having some buffalo tenders, which I did, and now I'm waiting on my loaded chili potato skins - you can see I eat healthy when I come here!

Lineups for tonight are:
Cleveland
G. Sizemore cf
R. Belliard 2b
J. Peralta ss
V. Martinez c
B. Broussard 1b
T. Hollandsworth lf
A. Boone 3b
F. Gutierrez rf
P. Byrd p

Cincinnati
F. Lopez ss
A. Dunn lf
K. Griffey Jr. cf
R. Aurilia 3b
S. Hatteberg 1b
A. Kearns rf
B. Phillips 2b
J. Valentin c
E. Ramirez p

I like the Reds lineup this way, though I'd take Ross over LLM, but I understand the need for some spanish fluency behind the plate.  Still a little confused too as to why Freel suddenly got the seat.  That'll show him to go 5 for 5!

BW3s
I'm now concerned that I might have a heart attack by inning number 3.  The potato skins might have been a mistake.

A couple of notes....
that I forgot to put in the Eyewitness report from last night...
  • I've been to two games this year in which David Weathers blew the lead.  Of course, that's almost the same as saying, I've been to two games this year in which David Weathers pitched.
  • Do people who take a sign that says "Git-R-Dunn" to GABP think they are being original?  I mean, is it even funny when Larry the Cable Guy does it?

Lopez
Nice play on the grounder way to his right.  Too bad Hatteberg couldn't scoop it.

Yes, the Lizard threw a lot of pitches in the top of the first, but they got him mostlly on the first few pitches. Byrd has gotten to several 3-1 and 3-2 counts.

Way back machine
in the 50's the Braves (Milwaukee)had 2 good starters Warren Spahn and johnny Sain)and a couple of nobodies. (sound familiar?) Anyway, the old saying was Spahn and Sain and pray for rain. We need a saying like that for Arroyo and Harang. Any of you poet laureates want to take a stab at that one?

Giambi has 24 homers?  Really?

Orlando Cabrera has reached base in 57 consecutive games?

My poor neighbor's card game is located in his garage with the garage door half open, for ventilation I bet.  Kinda sad.

Dunn. Franchise. Period. He's what, 26?

Godspeed Vern Ruhle.  The Buzzard's Nest needs you asap.

Eat crow Marty. Big heapin' serving of crow.

Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic here,
but this is one of those games that really turns a team around. After playing .500 baseball for the past three weeks, might this be what the Reds need to win another string of games?
Keep in mind, if the Royals come back and beat the Cards, we can refer to this game as the one that put the Reds back in first place. Hopefully to stay.

Wow
I was driving down the road to my hotel room for the night when Dunn hit the home run.  I drove at least a half a mile with one hand out the window and the other out the sun roof, pumping my fists frantically.  I'm just glad no one got hurt.

Some thoughts:

  • It's funny to read these types of game threads after the fact.  So much euphoria from the win that it makes me laugh at the despair that was felt during the game.  I laughed at ohiobobcat's prediction of an 8-7, but at the time it seemed very realistic.
  • I called Marty a tool multiple times tonight, but the big one was when the score was 7-0 and he said, "The glaring number is 4 straight innings of leaving two runners on base" (or something like that).  Really?  I would think the glaring number is the 7 runs the pitching staff allowed.  Sometimes I think he is so numb to the bad pitching that he ignores the fact that they often do nothing to put the team into position to win.
  • Why is Adam Dunn's batting average so low?  He sucks.
  • Jeff Brantley blows.  Two nights in a row I've listened to him essentially say the Reds have no business winning games.  And yet, they do.  He and Orel Hershiser need to go look in each other's eyes.  Apparently that's where you can see it.
  • Tyrone Hill is staying two doors down from me tonight.  I wish that made me a better, more interesting person.
