Game Thread: Game 79 vs. the Royals

TIME: 7:10 @ Great American Ball Park

ROYALS PROBABLE:
              REDS PROBABLE:
Bobby Keppel (0-4, 4.78)       Bronson Arroyo (9-4, 2.58)

Hey, game 79, which means we're almost half way there. So far so good, no?

I can't say I've ever heard of Bobby Keppel, but he's had a rough time his last three starts. Hopefully the Reds will be able to take advantage of a weak pitcher tonight.

Go Reds!

Apparently LaRue's unhappy that he's not playing everyday. Marc and Marty discussed trading him, but point out that his contract is going to be a big obstacle. David Ross is hitting well, can call a good game, and plays good defense. Everything we already know.

Why didnt Narron pitch Standbridge or Belisle
That sucks. Throw in your trash pitchers when you got the lead. Where is that in the baseball book of common sense? Hammond and Weathers are mop up at best.

by dmcgee on Jun 29, 2006 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

Because according to Krivsky last night
Hammond and Weathers have a "track record". You know what, Willie Mays had a track record when he played for the Mets...

Ross vs. Valentin
I'll take Ross 10 times out of 10. Why did Narron pinch hit?

Narron has apparently
lost his friggin' mind tonight.

by Ash on Jun 29, 2006 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Gamecast error. I guess Ross is hitting? Why do I not just listen to the game since I paid my $14.95?

by greg456 on Jun 29, 2006 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Ross grounded out
Valentin singled, Freel pinch-ran and stole 2nd, Lopez walked, Dunn is up now.

It sucks tonight. According to that, Lopez was out at home and Freel advanced to third. It's still 5-5 in the 9th.

If we get the win
Doesn't the official scorer have the right to name the winning pitcher? It's seldom invoked, but I think that's true. Anybody heard this?

by pw on Jun 29, 2006 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

I've heard
That it's seldom invoked because no one wants to set precedent.

But I was waiting until after the W :)

But yeah, the scorer should definitely use his discretion tonight and give the win to Arroyo.

that is only if
the starter doesn't go at least 5

Rule 10.19
MLB has the official rules available.

Official scorer may elect not to award the win to a reliever if his outing was "brief and ineffective," but in that case must award the win to a following pitcher who was effective.  In other words, it cannot be given to the starter if the lead was blown for him, regardless of whether he was by far the most effective pitcher in the game.

Also can't give both the win and save to the same pitcher.

you take water balloons or a peanut shooting sling shot to re enforce your point to Narron.

Bullpen
Ok something must be done. The bullpen is at Defcon 2 now. I think Weathers is hurt. Dl him and bring up someone. Utilize Belisle as the 8th inning guy.

Arroyo had a win stolen from him.

The Bullpen.

I hereby suggest that we never mention the phrase bullpen again. How about... those that shall not be named?

Man, Bronson must be fuming...
Narron was looking pissed in the dugout... frankly, I don't care. Unless someone tied him down or held a gun to his head and made him put Hammond and Weathers in, then I blame his moves for the blown save.
Weathers looked extremely hittable as recently as LAST NIGHT. Reggie Sanders was hitting .444 against Weathers when he came up, and surprise surprise, He GOT A HIT.
Hammond's best pitch is a 65 MPH changeup. I think everyone's figured this out by now.

Are we still worried about Belisle's back? I seriously want some sort of explanation as to why Belisle wasn't at least warming up...

This bullpen is pathetic. Blow it up.

2 out of 3
I'll take it. The Offense is coming around and some of the young players are getting it done. Bring on the Tribe. This could be real interesting because these guys have moments when the just kill the ball. Hopefully this week end will not be one of them. I hope the Lizard man goes through their line up like Godzilla through Toyko. 2 out of 3 from the Tribe would be a good way to keep things rolling. And those that we will not mention here will get it together this week end! you heard it here first.

Go Reds!

I think for my own sake, I am glad I missed this.  I would have probably thrown my monitor out the window in frustration in the 8th.  The comments were hilarious, however.

As for the B___pen, why not the "group of pitchers formerly known as..."?
