Rich Aurilia Signs With The Giants

Now what's John Fay going to write about?

2 years, $8 million. Pretty good pickup for the Giants, I'm sure Aurilia will be worth $4 million a year, especially in this market.

Mixed News
I guess I'm glad.  Good to have the draft picks, but we won't come close to matching the offense he gave us for the kind of money he got paid over the past two years.  IMHO, one slick move by O'Brien, for which he got a lot more criticism than he deserved.

by HokieRed on Dec 2, 2006 3:17 PM EST reply actions

I disagree
The additional at-bats given to Encarnacion and Phillips, and the runs saved in the field by Gonzalez, will more than make up for any offensive production we might have lost with Aurilia.

We take a big hit in our "Veteran Presence," though.  Need to sign somebody to replace that.

I hope you're right
but I fear that without any additional good hitters added this winter, this team is headed for the bottom 2 of the division.  The pitching staff isn't strong enough to carry perhaps the worst offense in the league.  It would help, of course, if Dunn and Griffey bounced back.

by Dayton Reds Fan on Dec 2, 2006 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Already signed Gonzalez and Moeller.
And Crosby and Stanton.  Don't forget Cormier too.  I think that's about all the "veteran presence" I can handle.

Next year
...is the year to add free agents. Trade Dunn before he turns into Kingman. Free up payroll. Good riddance Aurilia and LaRue.

by borchard504 on Dec 2, 2006 4:05 PM EST reply actions

Or
lock Dunn up long-term before he turns into Reggie Jackson.

Regular spot?
They also just resigned Durham and Feliz, which means that Aurilia is going to be playing first, and a little of everything else.  And once again, the Sabean Giants will be ancient.  (They're adding Dave Roberts to replace Alou, and still claim to want to keep Bonds).

Glad He's Gone
So we can stop talking about him.  I enjoyed having him this year, but I cannot believe he'd duplicate the numbers he put up for us in '06. We get draft picks which is something, so it's not a total loss. Let's focus on next week's meetings and getting us another bat - or another arm or two.

draft picks
I might be more excited if Dan O was handling the draft next season.

(Stubbs over Lincecum might equate to Gruler over Kazmir)

by fletch @ Red Reporter on Dec 2, 2006 7:38 PM EST reply actions

Stubbs/Lincecum
I was pissed about this on draft day, but the more I read on Stubbs, the more I like him.  I still think Lincecum was the pick, but it's not going to be as bad as the Gruler/Kazmir debacle.  We're getting a useful player in Stubbs.

Stubbs had 3 huge plusses and 2 huge question marks coming in.  He has all kinds of power, all kinds of speed, and is a fantastic defender.  All three of those were confirmed in his first professional action.  The 2 questions marks were plate discipline and contact rate.  He has answered one of those already, with a .110 isoD at Billings.  He still struck out a ton, but he has time to improve that.

If he doesn't iron out the contact problems, he's Mike Cameron.  .250AVG, 20HR, 20SB, gold glove defense.  If he does, the sky's the limit.

This draft was weak by all accounts, so taking a guy with a safe floor and a high ceiling isn't a bad idea.  I would have liked Lincecum, but I'm not holding that against Stubbs.

draft picks
And because SF's pick is in the top 15 we get their second round pick, plus a sandwich. Still should be plenty of fresh young talent though.

Gotta admit though...
Even though there is probably no place for him on this team that he would accept (at best for him a platoon at any of the infield spots), it was pretty cool being able to root for a guy we called the "Bad Man."

See you later, Bad Man, and thanks for a nice couple of seasons.

Will this suffice?
We still have the "Bad Centerfielder."

by Brendanukkah on Dec 3, 2006 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

I was trying to be positive...
Other bad people:

Bad Reliever (Franklin)
Bad Reliever (White)
Bad Reliever (Cormier)
Bad Reliever (McJeffsky)
Bad Reliever (Hammond)
Bad Starter (Michakalaka)
Bad Starter (Mays)
Bad Starter (Sunny D)
Bad Starter (Williams)
Bad Outfielder (McCrappen)
Bad Outfielder (McWisen)
Bad Shortstop (McClayton)
Bad Second Baseman (Womack)
Bad Outfielder (Hollandsworthless)

The problem is all of these were the "bad" bad and not the "good" bad.

Ooh, I like that even better
Since it builds on the "Bad Man" original name.  Nicely done.

Oh. Sorry.
Also Bad Doctor (Kremchek) and Bad Catcher (LaRue).

Krivsky I don't yet know about, but he started well and has been getting worse and worse.

If he signs Aaron Boone, I will know for sure that he is an idiot.  You know Narron will start him over Encarnacion and put him in for "defensive purposes" because he has such a great "veteran presence" and is a great "baseball guy" from a whole family of great "baseball guys."

Crazy week ahead?
This could be an interesting week. Bob C. is hinting on stretching the payroll. Wayne K. is emphasizing pitching and defense, and he says he's far from finished trading, so get ready, folks. We could be in for a mind-bender.
Did I say that?

Trade Dunn
Would you like this trade?

Dunn to the Orioles for Nick Markakis and A. Loewen or anothe pitching prospect. Or to have mor fun a 3 way deal including the Angels
Dunn to the orioles, Tejada to the Angels and Ervin Santana, Erick Aybar or Wood, kendrick to the reds.
Tell me your opinion and what would be the deal breaker.

Remember 1990

by Dominican Red on Dec 4, 2006 6:20 PM EST reply actions

heck yeah
I take either deal without a second thought.

Markakis a stud, Loewen is a top of the rotation starter.

Santana is a solid #3 and Kendrick can and will absolutely rake. Then I take Wood instead of Aybar.

But no way either team does this.
