Wacky Acquisition Idea

How about going after Freddy Garcia of the White Sox? They want to open up room in the rotation for Branden McCarthy, so I've heard speculation he could be moved. He's Ozzie's cousin or something, so that could make it slightly less probable.

Garcia is in the last year of his contract making 10M. In general my disdain for spending money is pretty well known. But if Castellini has some money to spend I'd much rather him put it into his payroll than his pocket. My objection is in tying up money long term. NBA teams have long recognized the value of money coming off the books in the next year. In 2008 (the year to win, as all wise Reds fans know) the Reds would have 19M to play with between Milton and Garcia's contracts.

If Dunn is moved there's the 10M. A cheap outfield platoon could be found. Or maybe Castellini really could find some money for this if Dunn is kept. If Larue or Lohse are jettisoned it could free cash.

Freddy-boy is league average with potential for more. ERA+ 03-06: 98, 121, 115, 103. Figure some improvement from the NL switch, minus some Reds defense and park adjustment, he ain't bad.
Harang
Arroyo
Garcia
Milton
Homer (or Lohse and the gang until then)

That's a strong 1-5 and when you have that you can get away with a weak offense. If Krivsky is intent on transforming to a pitching/defense team this wouldn't be a bad way to go about it.

So what do you say? Are we going to hit the hooker with the tire iron or what?
