Market for Dunn

The Angels, reportedly, are extremely close to signing Gary Matthews Jr, 32, to a 5 yr/$50M contract.  I'm certainly not sold a 37 yr old Matthews Jr is worth $10M/yr, but he will now earn "Juan Pierre" type money.

The FA's are getting loooooong deals.  For mucho dinero.  I think this would only up Dunn's market value, but it's his trade value that may be difficult to determine.  Many clubs will pony up the big bucks while tossing aside a first round pick, but I dont think many will pony up the big bucks and give up quality prospects for proven players under contract to another team.

We'll see.  GM chaos, and they're all getting together in two weeks.

Dunn
This is another reason Dunn is more valuable to the Reds than any team that would trade for him.  The fact that the Reds have him for 2 years (if they want him) and other teams would only get him for one is huge.  Add in the fact that it would cost them big bucks to re-sign him and I can't see anyone paying the necessary price to get him.  I'm more convinced now that he is staying than I was at the start of the off-season.

Did you know that on June 25th of this year, Dunn hit the first home run of his career on a 3-0 count?  I find that amazing.

It was probably a solo shot.

Oddly enough
it wasn't.  It was a two-run job in the fourth inning of a game the Reds were already leading 2-0, so Dunn was probably just trying to pad his stats since he thought the Reds had the game in the bag already.  But little did he know that his home run would be the difference as the Reds won 4-2 over Cleveland.  If he had known that the Indians were going to eventually score 2 runs, he probably would have choked during the at bat though.

at least it wasnt a "Rally Killer"
and, yes, I think it is absolutely appropriate to capitalize Rally Killer.

It's stature in phrase-ology is comparable to a Bloop.   (caps work there too!)

Confirmation
I just read that the Angels indeed threw caution (and a helluva lotta money) to the wind and signed Matthews to $50M/5 Yrs.

Now here's a unique angle that might cause Michael's brain to bleed...what does that do to the chances of us signing Dunn after his contract is up?

Did someone advocate signing Dunn after the pox he's been on the Reds?! Say it ain't so!

AAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHH
Why does everybody want to actively shop Dunn when his contract makes him twice as valuable to Cincinnati than he is to any other team?  If somebody makes an offer that knocks your socks off, fine, but why waste your time when it's extremely unlikely that you'll get proper value in return.  Also, Dunn's already shown himself willing to commit to Cincy where he wouldn't commit to any other team.  Dunn's the guy we should be building this team around.

This market makes it even more imperative that we keep Dunn.  In case you haven't noticed, the Reds pitching staff finished 5th in the NL in park-adjusted ERA, and the offense was 9th in the NL in runs (15th post-Trade).  You can't deal Dunn without replacing his offense somewhere.  In a market where Juan Pierre gets $9mil/yr. and Gary effing Matthews Jr. gets $10mil/yr., there is no way in hell you can get somebody to replace Dunn's production for the same price.  Soriano got $17mil, and Lee will get close to that.  Both of them are 5 years older than Dunn, and not as good of hitters.

I just can't understand how the team gets better by dealing its best player for less than he's worth, then replacing his production with a player who's older, more expensive, and not as good.  Explain that to me.

Veteran leadership?
Running out to your position?

That has to count for something, right?

Don't mind me...just thinking positive and pitching to contact, that's all...

Matthews had a break out season

Matthews
Would you believe me if I said that Matthews had essentially the same season in 2006 as he had in 2005, but he was much luckier in 2006?  In fact, I feel fairly confident in saying that without a similar amount of luck in 2007 that Matthews will put up an OPS around .750-.760 for the Angels.  That's a big drop-off from the .866 that he put in Texas this year.
