Edwin vs. Randa
Edwin's homer tonight got me comparing him to Randa. As luck would have it they've each played in 24 games since the trade. The breakdown:
.AVG/.OBP/.SLG/.OPS R HR RBI
JR .234/.278/.346/.624 8 1 8
EE .247/.288/.494/.782 9 4 16
Of course park factors are affecting this. Then again Eddie E is making league minimum. He needs to make fewer outs but so far he's acquitting himself nicely.

One number you forgot
I love Randa at 3rd base, but it's obvious that Edwin should be playing right now. If the Reds were in a pennant race, I would probably want Randa still at the corner, but they aren't, and he isn't.

that's ridiculous
JR was just the kind of veteran leadership this team has been screaming for. He was/is affordable. He'd have come into next year (as second year player) in a better position to lead.
But what's done is done. The comparison you're doing though is stupid.

Hmmm
I only ask because if the team started winning after he left (not that he was the cause), then what was his "veteran leadership" providing? How many veteran leaders do the Reds need? They've already got Griffey, Casey, Milton, Wilson, Mercker, Weathers, Aurilia, Cruz, Larue.
I'll take the young talent for at least 1/5 of the price on this one.

Aspire to have more than an average 3B
Here's Randa with the Reds vs Edwin
IsoP SecA AB/HR
JR .202 .301 25.5
EE .236 .318 22.0
Edwin's stats have sample size issues, but after a consistent 10 year career it is very clear who Joe Randa is.
He averages:
.286/.341/.424 13HR 81RBI 94OPS+
Kauffman Stadium is one of the most offensive inducive parks in baseball. GABP is more homer happy, so as expected his HR totals got a boost. He remains an average player who never made an all star team, never won a gold glove and at 35 is probably near the end of his career. He is "affordable" at around 2M per year.
There is every reason, based on Edwin's minor league track record and short time in the majors, to expect him to perform better than Randa. A case can be made that right now EdE is better. Five years from now when EdE is 27 and Randa is 40 it shouldn't be close.
Randa since the break:
.228/.271/.360 .631OPS
That's not just park factors, that's a slump. Probably the inevitable slump that was due from him playing over his career averages at 35. The Reds should feel lucky they sold high.

grrrr....
(I'm also not sold on the yank to left ala LaRue/Larson EE.......)
I like Case but his veteran presence is a little pricey for this team's budget when he's only slapping singles and not driving ball like he did last year. In Randa you really had a perfect fit for Cincy I believe. He was solid and affordable for this team's budget....
But again, done is done............I liked the Joker. I'm not going to waste energy with spilled milk. I'll channel my energy towards hoping and praying the reds don't lock up the donkey long term.....I'm begging you DannyO...don't do it........................
