DC Poll

OK,should help plan JD's trip to DC for him? Since he can't stay inside forever we should list some suggestions for sightseeing in the Nation's Capitol. There are so many tremendous sites to see while in DC that we can't cover them all but I listed some of my favorites in the attached poll. I also didn't list RFK stadium or a Nationals game since he mentioned that they are going to catch a game Wednesday evening.

might I suggest . . .
Drive out to Annapolis, find a nice outdoor restaurant, and enjoy all-you-can-eat crabs.

Great Falls?
We're headed out in the morning, and I see that someone voted for Great Falls?  What is that exactly?  I've never heard of it.

We'll definitely be going to the National Zoo, monuments, and the American History museum.  Other than that we're looking for ideas!  The Annapolis thing sounds fun Brian, I'll run it by her.

Okay, it was me
I was surprised that Great Falls Park was a choice, so I voted for it.  I spent a day there by myself once, although i'm not sure what else there is to do aside from walking the trails and climbing around on the rocks in the upper Potomac.  This site probably has more information.

http://www.nps.gov/gwmp/grfa/index.htm

It's located off the 495 beltway where it crosses over the Potomac between Virginia and Maryland (right where the George Washington Parkway begins).  I think you can get to the park from both sides of the river, but I went on the Virginia side.

With all of the things to do in DC, I wouldn't recommend driving all the way out there.  But it might be something to catch on your way out of town if you're going that way.  The overlooks make for great photos.

sight seeing
It is an awesome place to visit. Arlington Cemetery is one of my favorites and the Vietnam wall is an unbelievable site.

C&O Canal Park/Air and Space Museum
We went to this park years ago. You could take a ride on a canal boat and go through a lock on the canal. The people running this are in period costumes. Even if you don't go on a boat, it's a pretty area for a picnic. People jog on the footpaths along the canal where the mules used to pull the boats.
The Air and Space Museum is probably one of the most popular parts of the Smithsonian. We've been there a couple of times when our son was little (he's your age, JD). I worked in the Apollo program so I wanted to see the Lunar Module up close. There's also Lindbergh's plane and the Wright Bros.'s plane, etc., etc., etc.

I should have said
People jog on the towpaths where the mules still pull the canal boats.
