It's time for the Reds to have a knuckleballer
And I have just the one in mind.
He's actually in the organization, pitching well, and has put up quite a season to date.
Knuckleballers, as the weather heats up, benefit from the humidity and hot weather like no other type of hurler.
Jason LaRue may not be thrilled - but it's time for the Reds to promote from AAA Jared Fernandez.
Here's his stats, start by start
4/8 - 6.0IP, 4H, 1ER, 3BB, 4K, 1HR
4/12 - 8.0IP, 5H, 4ER, 4BB, 5K, 1HR
4/17 - 6.2IP, 8H, 3ER, 1BB, 5K, 2HR
4/22 - 7.0IP, 5H, 3ER, 1BB, 4K, 0HR
4/26 - 5.1IP, 12H, 6ER, 4BB, 2K, 0HR
5/3 - 5.0IP, 5H, 4ER, 2BB, 4K, 1HR
5/29 - 6.2IP, 3H, 0ER, 2BB, 2K, 0HR
6/3 - 5.2IP, 7H, 3ER, 2BB, 2K, 0HR
6/9 - 7.0IP, 4H, 1ER, 3BB, 5K, 0HR
6/19 - 7.2IP, 7H, 3ER, 1BB, 7K, 0HR
That's 10 starts, six of them the "quality" type.
On the season that's good for
65.0IP, 60H, 28ER, 23BB, 40K, 1.28WHIP, 3.88 ERA, 8.31 H/9, 3.18 BB/9, 5.54 K/9.
All numbers you like to see from a potential MLB starter/reliever.
Think he could do much better than Milton, Ortiz et al?
I certainly do.
Jared is on the hill tonight (Thursday) against Charlotte.

LaRue
High passed ball count
But before I would support it, I would want to know:
Is LaRue's passed ball count mostly his fault, or mostly the pitchers' fault? Has LaRue ever caught a knuckleballer before? What about Valentin? Sardinha? Freel? (j/k)
If the Reds don't have a knuckleball catcher like Wakefield's Mirabelli, then a knuckleballer could be worse than Milton and/or Ortiz.
We saw in the 2004 ALCS what happens when a knuckleballer throws to a catcher who hasn't caught knuckleballers much before (Wakefield to Varitek in 2 innings of very shaky relief, IIRC).
I think Uecker said once, "The best way to catch a knuckleball was to wait until it stopped rolling and then pick it up."
