It's not over yet
but I would bet my soul that we would not win this series.

Who are these guys, and what have they done with the Reds?

Where have you gone, Johnny Vander Meer?

Should have said
I would have bet my soul two days ago that we would lose this series.

Good job today so far. Guess some players haven't despaired as much as we've been led to believe.

I bet my soul too easily.

Where have you gone, Johnny Vander Meer?

MLB Gameday Audio
Is anyone else having trouble with Gameday Audio? First day game in about 100 years, and I can't listen to it...

Alternate reality
Did I fall into some alternate reality?  Reds haven't given up a hit in 4 innings...against the CARDINALS?  And they are leading 7 to 0?

Stupid Dunn
...and his solo homers.  Why can't he hit them with people on?  What?  He's led off every time?  So what, he's only good when there's no pressure on.

by cggarb on Jun 22, 2005 2:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Dunn
how dare Dunn get to the plate when guys aren't on base.

If he wasn't so selfish - he'd refuse to bat until players remained on the bases, so he could hit them in.

Because, he's solely responsible for how other players get on base.

by jmcclain19 on Jun 22, 2005 8:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

leadoff!
If he's so good with runners not on base, why don't we have him lead off again?  Wait, we tried that already?  Then why don't we have him bat after Casey after he erases the runner on first?

Narron
Thank you for getting Wagner out of there now.

Marty sounds like he's been expecting
a Cardinals comeback since we were up 7-0!

go ahead run at the plate
SIGH
At least I know they're not putting in Graves.

ugh
We score a lot of runs, but we do miss a lot of opportunities.  The Reds are hitting .250 with runners in scoring position.

Offense is not the problem, but a better offense would be a nice solution.

by Brian B on Jun 22, 2005 3:21 PM EDT   0 recs

Hmmm
Okay, Brian, I usually agree with you, but you can't be a critical of an offense that put 7 runs up on the board.  Missed opportunities or not, if they lose this game the fault lies fully with the pitching.  They HAVE to be able to protect a 7 run lead.

by Slyde on Jun 22, 2005 3:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

no no no . . . sorry
I totally agree.  I was trying to convince the Dunn detractors that their argument is better restated as "the offense is not the problem, but we just want the offense to be MUCH better to overcome the MUCH worse pitching."

sorry for the way it came out.

Alas
It didn't matter.....beers all around.  Narron: 2-0.  I hope the magic lasts all season long!!!

by Slyde on Jun 22, 2005 3:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

AND
Furthermore, I would only agree with that argument if the hitters were personally responsible for being such bad pitchers on defense.  But since it's not their fault, they don't deserve any of the blame for being such one-sided ball players.

Now I'm just making things up.

WE Win Again
Yahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

Dunn has no buisness batting 7th and Randa has no buisness batting 5th.  Bad lineup construction, but we got it Dunn.  Go Reds!!!!!!!!

Woo
Reds take a series from the Cardinals.  Pure luck or better managing?

LaRussa
I bet Boy Genius LaRussa is kicking himself for not having the righty Rolen hit for the lefty-with-a-cracked-rib Edmonds against Mercker.

Dunn
I 100% agree with Dunn batting 7th.  He is a rally killer with the Strike outs.  Today, he got two solo homers because he was hitting without anyone on (unlike the 4th or 5th hole).  Good move by Jerry.

by mikes on Jun 22, 2005 3:35 PM EDT   0 recs

Dunn (repy to mikes)l
I'm with you mikes (and Narron)....
This Dunn phenomena where people believe him to be one of the league's great hitters is laughable. In football they call teams "paper champions" who look good on paper. Dunn is the baseball equivalent. And looks to me like Narron sees him for what he is as well.

That said, I favor him getting opportunity in #2 hole against right handed pitching because IF IF IF IF he were to sustain OBP in #2 hole (I doubt he can) then it would be making use of his most valuable asset (his BBs). I don't get excited by a slew of solo homers which are offset by horrific K numbers. If he's not able to get 2 hole BBs though he'll be forever a 6/7 hole guy..... 5 hole at tops

Enough with the Homeruns and Strikeouts

by MichaelRed on Jun 23, 2005 9:41 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Rally Killer?
He's on base 40% of the time.  How is that killing a rally.  More than Casey, Griffey, Lopez or anyone else on the team.  You are taking AB's away from one of the most dangerous hitters in the league.

He's in the top 7 in OPS at .976.  He's 25 and one of the best hitters in the league.

There's a great post by Matt at redlegnation about Dunn and RBI's.  Here's the link:

http://www.redlegnation.com/

Scroll down to the title that says Enlighten Me!
Then read the title that says RBI, The other white meat.  It's one post about Enlighten Me!

It talks about Dunn not getting as many opportunities because of where he hits.

by Tyler on Jun 22, 2005 3:43 PM EDT   0 recs

best hitters?
Can't agree with that. He is good at what he does which is hit home runs, walk, and whiff. Great hitters are like Bonds, Derek Lee this year, Bagwell in the past. He is a good power hitter but not a great hitter, imho.
Where is Mario Soto when you need him?

by Caleb on Jun 23, 2005 9:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
At this pace, Jerry Narron will have a club that goes 119-43 and win the NL Central running away.
Don't mind me...just pitching to contact, that's all...

Kearns
He's probably on his way back up.  Hit well in his 5 games in AAA.  Kelly got hurt, and he didn't play tonight in AAA.  I see no reason to bench him if he isn't on his way back to the show.

by Tyler on Jun 22, 2005 10:24 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah
And it's not like Wily Mo's setting the ballpark on fire right now.

Kearns
Or is it an attempt to pacify Dunn by bringing back his buddy?
Where is Mario Soto when you need him?

Kenny Kelly
Is he out of options and would have to be DFA before being sent down? I thought I heard someone say that on WLW yesterday.
Where is Mario Soto when you need him?

by Caleb on Jun 23, 2005 7:55 AM EDT   0 recs

DL
Not if he goes on the DL though, right?
Brian B

by Brian B on Jun 23, 2005 9:08 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yah
He'll go on the DL.  He had surgery on his elbow I think.

by Tyler on Jun 23, 2005 9:22 AM EDT   0 recs

Wrong
Maybe I was wrong and the Reds are completely incompetent.  Kearns said he was just given the day off and he was in Charlotte.  Ramano had a good game, so they'll probably call him up because of the valubale big league experiece.

This article also lays out the plan to fix Milton, and a brilliant plan it is.

but . . .
I thought I read Hal McCoy saying Kearns was going to be called up.  Also, Kenny Kelly's surgery is on his knee.
